With Rylan I had a girl who faught with her DH the whole time...lol.

With Xavier the lady was very nice but not there long. I did have a little mishap though. TMI...After I had him and was brought to my room as I was getting out of the wheelchair I bled all over the place. I got in bed...was spread eagle while the nurse was doing whatever she was doing. One of her visiters came back into the room not realizing I was there and walked right over to my side to grab a chair and turned red as a lobster when he saw meChat Icon

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

With DS I lucked out at Huntington and had no roomate until about 11PM the night before I left. Was in 5 nights total..Failed induction sunday into monday.
I was kicking myself for not leaving that day! LOL
She left the TV on, snored, and cried.
The next AM I was packing up and we ended up talking a bit. They kept the baby in the nursery for some reason (I don't recall) and then I started feeling bad. I kept DS in the nursery for the overnight feedings.

With DD at LIJ Manhasset, I was admitted into a room with 2 other women. This was the high risk wing.
Once they told me I'd be there until delivery (this was April, I was due in June), the moved me into a private room. I didn't have to pay. I called it my little apartment. I was there from about April 14th and was discharged May 8th. DD was born May 4th.
What also helped was, DD was in the NICU. I think I wouldve lost it if my roomates had their babies with them and I didn't.

If you want to see jaws drop, announce on any playground outside of NYC that room sharing goes on.Chat Icon

They are in complete disbelief!

I agree. I am SOOOOOOOOO glad I live OOS. All my births I had my own room and could not imagine sharing.

Even then though, I never left blood on the floor.Chat Icon

Just realized my post wasn't very helpful.Chat Icon

Here's something- my mom is still very close to her hospital roommate from when I was born 37 years ago.

With my 1st we got a private room Chat Icon

With my 2nd, I got a regular room since my DH needed to go home anyway at night to stay with my DS and that was the main reason we opted for the private the 1st time...

Fortunately I ended up being by myself all 3 ( or 4Chat Icon ) days I was there until they day I was being discharged, when they moved another woman in...

Hoping that happens again Chat Icon

(St.Charles only has a handful of private rooms and I think in '05 we payed $500)

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

With DD #1, due to the circumstances, I had a private room as a courtesy. It was simply the greatest thing ever.

With #2, I had no roomate for Sunday night or monday night, but they gave me one on Tuesday night. By Wednesday I wanted to kill her. Her DD wasn't in the room because she was brought down to the NICU, becasue she couldn't regulate her body temp. My DD was there too, but for her blood sugar.

So fast forward to me asking her if she was ok on wednesday pm, and we talk for a bit. I told her my story with DD #1, born at 32 weeks, in the NICU for 5 weeks. Then later I hear her talking about giving birth to her baby "so prematurely." Her baby was born at 36 weeks, 6 days. I wanted to ram her into a wall after that. She was an idiot.

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

First night I had the room to myself and they even let DH sleep there even though they don't usually allow that.
Then I got my 1st roommate the next day...she was OK, pretty quiet.
My 2nd roommate was a huge PITA. They brought her in at 3:00 A.M., lights on, nurses talking loudly, etc...it was awful. She kept the baby in the room all night (right on the other side of the curtain) so I had to listen to the crying and loud SHHHHHHHHHHHsssssss which drove me crazy. So I ended up bringing my baby into the room all night too. We just didn't click at all.
And the bathroom sharing was totally gross. Next time I would be very tempted to get a private room but I don't think we could swing the $800 a night.

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

Good Sam only has 2 private rooms. I am still friends with a girl who had one of them while I was there, we actually met in recovery.

my 1st roommate was sweet. Quiet girl who spoke little English, but was courteous and sweet. The staff were obnoxious towards her though. We were both c sections. They were so rude, doing the "talk louder so she'll understand" thing, barely paying any attention to her. She was discharged a day before me.

That night, they brought in the most obnoxious person I've ever met in my life. She was in for her 2nd c section, 3rd child. Her ENTIRE family was allowed to accompany her to our room at 2 AM. They were not courteous, were loud and obnoxious, moving the curtain and woke up my DD just as I got her to sleep. She moaned and wailed all night. The next day her entire loud obnoxious family was back and this time her DH held up his 1st born son and proclaimed at the top of his lungs "THIS IS MY SPERM". The mom of 3 kept asking me, the first timer, all sorts of questions about things like formula (even after I said I was nursing) diapering etc. Her youngest was only 18 months, how do you forget that in that short a time????

First time around- my roomate was horrible. She STUNK! I had the nurse bring a fan in my room to air out the funkiness! I told the roomate she needed to shower because I was gagging all night.

Second time around- PRIVATE ROOM.

My roommate was really nice but...
She kept clogging the damn toilet!! She refused to use toilet paper because she said it was too thin, so she used the paper towels instead! Chat Icon
She also had a C-section (I had vaginal) and she kept taking all my supplies.. They had to bring me to labor & delivery to use the bathroom.

I specifically chose an OB that delivered at StonyBrook so I could get a private room. I
I would rather do a water birth in my dining room than share a room.

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

Mine was pretty uneventful.

I had my c/s in the Am was in my room by say 12/1pm. roomate was nice, she had a c/s a few days earlier so gave me some advice etc.
Felt bad fro her in the evening as there were some complications with her son, tests being done so she was on the phone etc alot. But all went well and she left the following day.
We both allowed hte nurses to bottle feed baby at night, so it was a quiet evening. DHs arent allowed to stay at St Catherines.

Next 2 nights I had the room to myself. Which was nice.
It was one bathroom for 3 beds in the room but I only had the 1 roommate for one night so no biggie.

I never had a private room - no regrets and never had any issues with my roommates - I guess I lucked out.

With DS I had a private room. Requested it as soon as we checked in. I totally think it was worth the money. I would do it again when baby 2 comes along. It was great having my own bathroom.

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

I had a roomate with DD and it wasn't horrible. Except the night that she jacked the heat up and I thought I was going to die! THAT was horrbile. She didn't have a lot of visitors and she had a baby daddy who wasn't around.

With DS I had no roomates, and I obviously preferred it that way. Just to not have to listen to anyone else.

Me too and worth every penny. I ended up having a csection which made my stay longer and expensive but it was the best 800 bucks we ever spent. It was nice to be alone with DH and dd those nights. My company also stayed much longer, nurses never bothered me as long as my family wasn't loud.

Re: Let's talk about your hospital roommates...

I delivered in Winthrop in April 2008.

I ended up having a c-section and didn't get moved up to a room until midnight. I had a roommate who seemed nice, but I was so out of it and it was late, so we barely talked. The next morning, my TV did not work and they moved me to another room.

I was alone most of that next day, which was great since that's when most of my visitors came. Then a new mom came in and at first she was nice, but then it just got crazy. Her doctor came in and wanted to give her something and she was like, well my sister is a doctor and I have to ask her first if that's ok. That was her answer to everything - from drinking water to peeing - I have to ask my sister! Then the lights were too bright (she had the bed by the window) and she demanded a darker room. She got a new room the next day.

I was then in my room alone for the last 2 days and it was pure heaven!!!! Chat Icon
