This is sad, and she leaves behind a 13 year old. TMZ is reporting she hanged herself with a scarf tied to her bedroom door

I remember feeling such a sense of accomplishment when I bought my very first Kate Spade bag. I still love them! I was very sad to read this.

So the articles are saying that she left a suicide note telling her 13 year old daughter that she loved her - and that it's not her (the daughter's) fault - and to "ask daddy". Huh? That's a lot to put on your husband - even in bad times! And that he was in the next room when it happened? The whole thing is terrible.

Re: Kate Spade Suicide
Wow. That really, really sucks. When you care so much and try so hard to no avail and say forget it, it must still be so hurtful. But it's so true...you can't force someone to get help if they don't want it.

I really wish they didn’t give out what was in the note. That’s so personal and private. If you have ever experienced a suicide with a loved one or friend, the note is so private and really for the immediate family. I don’t care if she was famous or not, that info does not need to be given out.
It’s a shame that she was so worried about her brand and had trouble wanting to get help. However, that’s half the battle of dealing with depression, etc. I know this from personal experience; I have anxiety and have had depression a few times. Getting yourself into a doctor’s office is just so difficult.
Hanging yourself sounds so brutal. Not to get too graphic here, but how does hanging yourself on a doorknob work? I mean do you just slam the door shut? I hope they investigate this more. I suspect that there is more at play here.

terrible.
from my understanding: hanging from a doorknob is done by closing the door so it doesn't swing. you get on your knees and drop your weight forward. i believe this is how robbin williams did it.
ets: i wrote this before reading the article in the link. yes, that's how robbin williams did it

I am just so saddened by this because her sister explained how they tried to get her help for so long, and she was worried that getting help for mental illness would cause harm to her brand Mental illness still has such a horrible stigma in our society

Awful. What an awful way to die. I hope this brings some awareness. I also hope there are no copycat suicides.

No further copy cat suicides. That's so weird that she was fascinated by Robin Williams' death and imitated it. Ugh why would you want to hang yourself? It just sounds so tortured.
I also agree with you about what you said about the suicide note. I wonder who released that information to begin with. I can't imagine that an investigator on the scene would be so unprofessional as to do that.

I still do not understand the concept of hanging by doorknob though. If you lean forward wouldnt your body at some point go into a place where you feel like you just have to stand up to get air? Like if you hang from a ceiling there is no floor under you. Seems odd.

This bothers me so much. That she felt it would be ok to kill herself, leave her daughter with no mother, but getting help would hurt her brand!!! She sold her Kate Spade brand years ago, I understand she had a new venture but geez -- just fall out of sight and take care of yourself!!! A person with the means can just say they are off in the south of france, or whatever excuse they want and go check in somewhere for help... What a shame to feel this is a better option. I feel so bad for her family and loved ones...

Sadly, people with severe mental illness are not thinking rationally. They aren't thinking about the family they are leaving behind. They aren't thinking "hey I should get help". I tend to believe she just didn't want the help her sister and husband were trying to get for her. She was using her brand as an excuse. Like the sister said, sometimes you can't save someone from themselves. I could never imagine doing it, but that's because I am not in that state of mind, thank God. I think that if you are that far down in the depths of mental illness that you think suicide is your only option, you aren't thinking like the rest of us, kwim? And that is scary as shit

not to make light of any of this... just the opposite. i guess i haven't been that far down in the depths.
there have been a few times that i've considered "vanishing" and the ONLY thing that kept me from it was the thought of leaving my son. sometimes, i believe he came to earth to keep me from going through with it. which then makes me think that there's gotta be a reason for me to still be here. so i'm still finding my reason to be here.
but yes, the thought of my son being without a parent (since his father proved himself to be a deadbeat from day one) keeps me chugging along.

Just horrible, I feel so bad for her daughter and husband. I read an article from People that the sister hasn't talked to Kate in 10 years, so she probably doesn't have that much insight into what was happening, just someone jumping into the spot light -terrible.
