This poor woman, her poor family. My heart is very heavy that she was so tortured she killed herself.
Shame shame shame on the radio station.

The hospital receptionist who was hoaxed by a prank call from a DJ claiming to be the queen asking about Kate Middleton has been found dead.
"It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff," the hospital said in a statement released today.
The nurse was identified as Jacintha Saldanha. The hospital said that Saldanha worked at the hospital for more than four years. They called her an "first-class nurse" and "a well-respected and popular member of the staff."
"We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital," the statement said. "The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time."
The hospital extended their "deepest sympathies" to family and friends, saying that "everyone is shocked" at this "tragic event."
"She will be greatly missed," the hospital said.
Earlier this week, the hospital fell for a prank call from an Australian radio show where the hosts pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles looking to speak to Kate Middleton, who had been admitted to the hospital for her pregnancy. The call was put through to a second nurse who told the royal impersonators that Kate was "quite stable" and hadn't "had any retching."
The duchess spent three days at the hospital undergoing treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum, severe or debilitating nausea and vomiting. She was released from the hospital on Thursday morning.
The Tuesday morning prank call came from Australian DJ's Mel Greig and Michael Christian. They impersonated the royals, complete with exaggerated accents. They even enlisted two co-workers to bark like the queen's pet corgis.
The queen impersonator asked for her granddaughter and was promptly transferred to another hospital employee.
"I'm just after my granddaughter, Kate. I want to see how her little tummy bug is going," the radio host said, suppressing laughter.
"She's sleeping at the moment, and she has had an uneventful night and sleep is good for her," the nurse said. "She's been getting some fluids to rehydrate her because she was quite dehydrated when she came in, but she's stable at the moment."
The fake royals went on to ask when would be a good time to visit and were told that "anytime after 9 o'clock would be suitable."
"She's quite stable at the moment. She hasn't had any retching ... since I've been on duty. And she has been sleeping on and off. I think it's difficult sleeping in a strange bed as well," the nurse said.
The hospital apologized for the mistake.
"The call was transferred through to a ward, and a short conversation was held with one of the nursing staff," the hospital said in a statement. "King Edward VII's Hospital deeply regrets this incident."
"This was a foolish prank call that we all deplore," John Lofthouse, the hospital's chief executive, said in the statement. "We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously, and we are now reviewing our telephone protocols."
The radio station has since apologized for the prank call.
"2Day FM sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the inquiry to Kate's hospital. The radio segment was done with lighthearted intentions," the station said in a statement.
"We were very surprised that our call was put through. We thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents," the radio hosts said in the statement. "We're very sorry if we've caused any issues, and we're glad to hear that Kate is doing well. We wish Kate and her family all the best."

Oh this is heartbreaking.
I wonder if she feared, once the story calmed down a bit, that they would fire her because of it?? It's just such a shame to hear something like this, I'm shocked!

It's such a sad story and the comments going around the internet about this story are sickening. People are calling her too sensitive and making fun of her. The whole joke was stupid and cruel. I hope those DJ's are ashamed of themselves and that they think twice before pulling another stunt like this.

I am sure it was a mixture of embarrassment for "falling for it" and that she would be forever the but of a joke for this pregnancy and beyond. Also fear of her job. This went international, sure one day people would forget it but it was probably too overwhelming to her right now.

wow...really didn't expect this outcome what a shame. All bc of a stupid stunt. She probably felt she shamed herself & her family by betraying the royals confidence. I wonder if kate will make a statement re: the issue. I know i'd feel awful if i knew a prank that involved me went awry causing a death

I really do think the dj's went too far with this, regardless if that was their intent. They tricked this woman into breaking confidentiality and publicly humiliated her. I'm sure she took her job very seriously and was probably very nervous caring for such a public figure. My heart breaks for this woman. Obviously her job and professionalism were very important to her.
I know these dj's didn't intend for it to end this way but I still feel they were out of line. They knew they were intentionally trying to make a fool out of someone and possibly cost them their profession. Breaking confidentiality isn't taken lightly in the medical field.

That's horrible. I do believe that the radio station should be held accountable in some way. They didn't cause this woman's death, but they did try to obtain medical information, and they continued to play along and broadcast it.
I'm sure this woman got in a lot of trouble behind the scenes.

I disagree that there might have been something underlying, per se.
THE most public figure on the planet? Probably.
Breaking every confidentiality law?
Public humiliation for "falling for it".
Affrraid for her job?
But to give up such protected information on one of THE most public people in the world is probably more than she could take.
Her profession, everything she has known is now suspect because of a stupid DJ.
I can see how the pressure of what happened, of what she did was just too much. And it wasnt her fault. She was just doing her job.

I have to disagree. I don't see what's cruel about a prank phone call? While it's very sad, they never in a million years could've foreseen an outcome like this. ALL radio stations do prank calls.
I guess I can see the reasons why she would've done that- fear for her job/embarassment and all of that- but it still seems extreme to me. Really, are people supposed to stop telling jokes because somewhere on this planet, someone MIGHT be upset enough to harm themselves or someone else? Because that's all it was- a joke. If they were told to bugger off and hung up on (like they really should've been), it would've been another harmless prank.
ETA: I'm a receptionist and we have had numerous VIPs here in my office (though none nearly as big as Kate). I've also had a ton of prank phone calls and I've never given out information like this.

I have to agree. I was kind of confused while reading the story. The only thing she did was put a call through to another nurse in another wing? Maybe I'm missing something?

Oh, I've received them, too. When I was about 13/14, I received "prank" phone calls on and off for about a year. Someone breathing heavily into the phone, saying explicit things and my name over and over again. To this day I don't know who it was. This was NOT anywhere near that. That's something to get upset about. A prank like this should be harmless, IMO.
ETA: I say "prank" because I consider them to actually be harassment and not a prank at all.

As for the radio show, I don’t necessarily find what they did “mean”, but I also don’t find the humor in it. I mean, I think 80% of us have made prank calls, but that should end in grade school. An adult making them? Not so funny, IMO.

Impersonating a royal to gain information that would otherwise be private or classified should be illegal. They should be in trouble for what they did...but because they are from australia and not governed by the queen i don't know how that would work.
It's not that people should stop telling jokes...it's that this particular one endangered the livelihood of this nurse. They intentionally tried to trick a hospital into divulging information regarding the health of a patient...in other words they willfully and knowingly attempted to get a medical worker to breach doctor patient confidentiality AND they did so in regards to a royal. it was very stupid on their part.

The cruel part is they tricked this nurse into breaking patient confidentiality then publicly mocked her around the world on their radio station. I would say that's pretty cruel. This wasn't a run of the mill prank phone call, they threatened her livelihood and made her look foolish and unprofessional.

I don't believe this for a minute. Like they said- they thought someone would hang up on them the minute they heard the ridiculous accents. And a person barking in the background? This is what happens with most prank phone calls- they call and push buttons (figuratively) until they get hung up on. I doubt they were actually trying to get "privileged information on a royal" or to get anyone in trouble or worse.
I'm sorry, I feel really bad for the family, but to say this is cruel or that they should be held accountable is ridiculous to me.

if that wasn't their intention then they should have hung up instead of continuing to be put through and continue to ask questions. They wanted to see how far they could run with it. Why else would you call a hospital? what information did they think they could gain had the "prank" gone well? they bragged about it all week on their twitter and page
