What's odd is the 2 boys were FRIENDLY before the incident.. they were in the same group of friends.
my point is, if the deceased called Aaron White the "N" word, HE brought race into this before the gun went off. it has nothing to do with the trial.
ahhh see, that flew right over my head.

Did those kids have a right to show up at his doorstep on HIS PROPERTY and threaten him and his family? They weren't there to sell Girl Scout Cookies.

So you think it's right to kill some stupid kid who thinks he's tougher than he actually is. The had NO weapons. He took the gun out before the kids even got to his house.
He MURDERED someone. If they were both of the same race the sentence would've been much more severe, IMHO.
Bottom line- he should've called the cops.
Was his gun legal?

actually, I believe that they were still ON his property, albeit at the foot of it.
the thing is this.
did he commit a crime: YES. he was convicted of acting recklessly, which it was proven he was.
it was NOT proven that he went out their with the INTENT TO KILL anyone. so it is NOT murder. NOT murder. under the letter of the law. and believe me, if you were in the situation, you'd want the letter of the law on your side too. (and I believe he did yell to his wife to call the police...not sure if she did or not..)
should he have gone outside with his gun???? maybe...maybe not. perhaps he would not have been charged at all if his gun had been licensed...would that make you all feel better?
by all accounts this was a standup guy, looking out for the safety and well being of his family when confronted at HIS HOME by a group of young MEN that wanted to "kill" his son. that called him and his son "N****R" and other racial epithets.
that apparently weren't even scared by the presence of the gun...so who knows what would have happened had the gun NOT gone off....who knows what those drunken young men would have done to that family.
it is terrible and it is tragic. but it is NOT murder. and his sentence is IMO fitting under the circumstances and under the law.

I never followed the case and read it in the paper today a little more careful this morning. The teenagers WERE on his property and were coming after his son. I'm not saying that the use a weapon as a remedy for racial slurs and for a mob of teenagers coming on to attack you was right, but I believe that anything is possible in the heat of the moment when your life and your family's life is being threated...he should have called the police, yes, but did he have a right to come outside of his house and onto HIS property? You darn skippy he had the right...IMO this was a very unfortunate accident and I know that White is truly sorry and remorseful for what happened...the sentence is fair IMO...I'm surprised he wasn't given more, but its fair.

I agree 100%. Again we can all say 'he should have done this' 'he should have done that' but if it was YOUR CHILD being threatened by a mob of drunk kids, you may have reacted the same way. I do not believe he INTENDED to kill that boy, and obviously the sentencing says the same thing.

I thought that law about shooting someone or your property only applied to them being in your HOUSE- not your driveway or even garage
this is what the police are for- you can't just take matters into your own hands- we would have chaos on the streets

Hard to say. I think the Rev. Al had a lot to do with the Judge Kahns lenient sentencing.

My dad said the same thing today.. He said if it were flipped the father would have been sentenced only for probation..

That's right, if they are in your house you can shoot them in NY.
In Florida you can shoot them if they are on your property. I don't know about Texas.

I am not sure and I hope never to know. I think that part of me would not feel ANY sentence was enough...b/c my boy..my son...is gone from me.
but I *hope* that I will also be able to see how so many mitigating circumstances contributed to my sons death...and that my son was NOT innocent in these factors.
and I *hope* that I would be able to believe that is was a tragic and reckless accident...and not that this man WANTED my baby boy to die.
but this is why we are tried by a jury of our peers...and why we don't mete out justice according to what suits the wronged.
our laws are supposed to be unfetterd by emotion. so I think for the most part, it would be rare to emotionally feel like anything could pay for taking my child away from me.

I do not know the race of every poster who has answered here, but on another message board, someone said that you really have to walk a mile in the shoes of a black man to understand. They said that a white person would call the police and trust that the police would help. They said that a lot of black people have reasons not to trust the cops. This gave me more to think about, especially because I am growing weary of the justice system in suffolk county.
Daniel Cicciaro, Sr., is a friend of Joey "Guns" Creedon, who is believed to have ties to the murder of the Tankleffs. Creedon came to court during the trial and was at the sentencing yesterday. Suffolk county is a very small world.
It is a terrible that a young person had to die. I would not have wanted to be the sentencing judge yesterday.

This is my same thought-it isn't fair. The family that their child was killed, yes, it is horrible, and I would be pi$$ed if my kid was killed. But still, I feel like race was involved, even if you don't want to believe it could be.

I think they should have giving him more than 2 to 4 years in prison. I am sorry you do not pull a gun out and point it at someone and the gun is loaded and its safety is off and then tell me that it accidently went off. I kid died because he was being a kid. Are you telling me you never fought with kids when you were a kid. If it was you kid who got shot would you think 2-4 years is enough time. The parents could not have acted like adults and called the cops or grab there kid and throw him in there house. Give me a break.
