I feel like people are butting in & telling us changes we need to make.

So far :

- you need to get rid of your cats. Take them to a shelter.

- You need to get rid of your husband's motorcycle.

- your DH can't have an XBOX anymore. He won't have time for it. Take over that room and turn it into a nursery

I've been polite so far, but don't know how long it will last.

I think it's so rude!!!

Yes, you have children and know better than us what we are about to face. But what works for your life/marriage doesn't work for everyones! Chat Icon

YES!! Telling us we can't expect to go to as many Yankee games as we have in the past (well duh, but they go so far as to say it's better if we DON'T have a season ticket package) and that we MUST get a larger car. They are horrified that I'm not getting an SUV or a minivan. So annoying.Chat Icon

Re: Is anyone else being told to make life changes ?

Yup, but it's usually people who don't share the same lifestyle as us.

We are very active and always have been. We work out a lot (well, I used to Chat Icon but will start again), DH plays soccer twice a week and we play on a kickball team (i'm not playing this season) friday nights. People, mostly those who never had an active lifestyle like us, keep telling us "oh you aren't going to be able to do those things anymore"... "get ready for THAT to change", etc.

Yes a baby changes things, but let us experience it and decide what we will and won't be able to do anymore.

alll 3 of those are stupid. yeah maybe you won't have as much time for x-box but, don't get rid of it. You need your veg out time too!

As for the cats??? Why? Plenty of people have pets and babies. I could never get rid of my pup!!

And why would your DH get rid of the bike? It's not like he's going to tie an infant on the back and drive it around???

Tell everyone to go shove it!

Ok...I have an almost 2 year old, so I'll give you my take on those.....

We have 2 cats. Have had 2 cats the entire time we've had our daughter. No problems. (We were watching some cats for a little while and had 4 once)

Your husband can keep the motorcycle....we dont' have one - but it's essential to keep your identity when you have a child!! So if it makes him happy, keep it. He won't have as much time to ride, maybe...but they'll be time!

My husband has XBox, Wii, and his computer games. Same as above, you both need to maintain things that make you happy. If your life is all about the baby - it will lead to you both resenting the baby!!

Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy - and try to ignore people. Yes, your life will change...but you don't need to make yourselves miserable!!

Ugh, I don't know why people feel the need to make negative comments like that. We have 2 cats also and they are like part of our family. If anyone suggested we get rid of them, I would tell them to take their suggestions elsewhere!

OMG that is really obnoxious. I would be upset too. Just from personal experience, DH still has time to play video games and he is an excellent father to DS.

So far, not really.

Just the "Get your sleep now because after the baby comes, you'll never sleep in late again." comment.

Re: Is anyone else being told to make life changes ?

Yes!!!! If I hear one more person tell us that we have to buy a house right now I'm going to shoot myself!!!!

I'm sorry you do not have school loans, but we do, and we have a lot of them!!! I'm sorry you are in different places with your jobs, we are working to get where we want to be too. Some of my friends and family are honestly making me feel like I live in a hut made of mud. Oh and don't worry, next time it rains we are going to go out, grab some of that wet dirt, and build another room for the baby.

We rent, and ideally we want to own a house. Yes, we would like it to be before the baby comes, but we need to make sure we can afford what we are buying, and that we aren't going to run ourselves into the ground.

We are not planning any major lifestyle overhauls. However, we are making adjustments that will free up extra money for us. Oh, and the cat stays. There is no reason why a baby can't be in the same house with a pet unless that pet is aggressive toward humans.

For the people who are telling you to get rid of your cats....you DON'T necessarily have to. Everyone told me the same thing, and I wanted to take a "wait and see" approach. My cat is actually really good with my DD....thank God!

I think that's what we are planning to do also...I'm just nervous about them jumping in the pack and play etc..plus it annoys me that i will have to keep the baby's door closed all the time..but oh well..they are a part of our family.

I have a cat! We are going to see how it goes. I love him to death and would never want to get rid of him inless of course we had to, we might have to section him off to one side of the house and I am def putting a hook and eye on the babies door. Im only paranoid because of all the people lwho are telling us to get rid of him ( so rude )

We hear "Sleep now while you can" Honestly the last thing im actually thinking about is sleeping. Im not one to sleep my life away. I would much rather have my precious little one than have the ability to sleep a full 8 hours in a row everyday.

I hear " You will never finish college now" UGH this is a big one for me...its so disapointing.

ANother one....Wow at 26? Since when has 26 been to young to have a child?

Yesturday people told me my belly looked like a big easter egg lol

I've gotten this from my mother at least 3 times. Now, I just stop talking and get off the phone with her when she brings it up. She's been TOLD that we'll deal with it as we have to, and to drop it, and she won't. It infuriates me.

People really just say stupid things to pregnant women.

We had 2 cats and 2 dogs when DS was born. I hated people that told me we'd have to get rid of our animals!!!

As for jumping into things, we had everything set up before DS arrived. The animals checked everything out and lost their curiosity so once the baby came, they never bothered to jump into it again. Granted, every animal is different but this was our experience. We never shut his door. Honestly, the cats wanted nothing to do with him once he came. He was too loud for them, I guess. Chat Icon

I can't help you with the second two - but you can tell people that having cats around when your child is an infant actually has been proven to reduce airborne allergies by I think a pretty large percentage. Dogs too, btw.

I so agree... in fact your "lifestyle" has so many positives for a young child to grow up around. Mom and Dad need their own outlets and pets are a wonderful part of childhood.

Cats: I was told to do the same as you and I told people to shove it! We had as many as 5 (yes FIVE) cats in our house until our daughter was 6 months old and one died of severe renal failure. We are down to 4 cats and are very happy, no one is leaving - our daughter LOVES our cats and they ARE GREAT with her. She pets them, chases them and despite that DD can be "rough" (tail pulling) with the one cat who is 10 and slowing down, the cat just moves away. No scratching, no biting, and absolutely no "breath" has been stolen!!! Here a great lesson to kids is safe responsible pet ownership and the love that goes both ways. She wheezes around my smoking mother's house, but not at home with the my cats.

Motorcycle: my DH has one and if we had the space and he used it more he'd keep it. Times are financially tight, we need the shed (we don't have a garage) and he doesn't ride as much without me on the back of it so yes we are contemplating selling for now, but with the hopes of him getting another one after we get a bigger house. If you have the space, the money and your DH enjoys it, then keep the bike...

XBOX: My DD's first "gift" to her daddy on Father's Day was Nintendo Wii. No he doesn't have that much time for it anymore, but I will say, on some Friday nights when we didn't have a sitter... it's nice for DH and I to play bowling in the basement with the baby monitor nearby when she goes to sleep. We get to have some fun and bond and we don't have to pay someone to watch the baby.

ETA: there is only one cat that dares jump into the baby's crib, but NEVER does it when the baby's in the crib. I do keep the room door closed at this point only for naps and at night - which I'd do even if there were no cats b/c I don't want us to disturb DD with noise. In the beginning the door was always closed and I was "fur paranoid", but I loosened up on this as time went on. There has seriously never been an issue.

Oh and the suggestions are just going to keep coming even after the baby arrives Chat Icon Everyone is an expert but you guys will make things work for you.
I would never have asked DH to give up his video games (or motorcycle if he had one). Granted, DH didn't have them same time available to him to play - but that won't be for long. And I sincerely doubt your DH will be strapping the baby on the back of the motorcycle to do wheelies on the highway.

Better yet, take a picture of the baby on the back of the bike after it's born and email it to those telling you to get rid of it Chat Icon Chat Icon

And next time they tell you no more Yankee games - tell them you can still go because you plan on dropping the baby to them for the night!
