Infant w the flu

My 7 month old ds was just diagnosed w the flu. The ped prescribed tamiflu for the fam but he's too young for it. Dr said to just rotate Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hours. Anything else I can do? What should I look out for? He got the vaccine so I was surprised and I'm so sad for him Chat Icon. Fever is about 103+ and goes down to 102 with meds. He's coughing and congested and really weak and cranky. Tia for any advice. I am putting wet cloth on his head w room temp water also. I'm trying to keep him hydrated but he doesn't have much of an appetite. I offer the bottle or water when he's awake.

ETA: At what point do I take him to the hospital or call the dr re: fever? His fever is 104.7 right now. Is there a # where if it reaches that I need to call someone??

Infant w the flu

Poor kid! Hope you all feel better soon!! I would just keep doing what you're doing, unfortunately there's not much more to do. A humidifier might help the congestion a bit, and a bath might help to bring his temp down some too.

Personally though I would offer formula/BM more then water though to keep up his calorie intake as the fever is going to be burning a lot of them off.

Unfortunately the vaccine is just a guess as to what strains are going to be out there. Some years they are better with guessing then others.

Thank you! Ill offer more formula. I'm hoping he doesn't develop pneumonia he's coughing a lot. Dr said his lungs sounded ok for now but I'm not sure what to look out for. He's crying even in his sleep Chat Icon

The only advice other than to get him to drink fluids is to keep him in a onesie instead of heavy clothes. If your house is cold, warm up the house.

My DS used to get 104/105 fevers with ear infections when he was an infant. I remember that a dr in the ER said to me that you should always keep clothes to a minimum when they have a fever and use cold compresses. Helps their skin breathe. Always followed that rule from that day forward and it always helped DS. (He is almost 5 now)

Re: Infant w the flu

When DD had a fever I kept the house warm (normal) but her clothes light. I gave her a bath (regular bath temperture). Encouraged her eating and sleeping. I hope your baby is feeling better soon.

My DD has the flu too.. Make sure you try to keep them hydrated! That's our biggest problem. She wound up getting three bags of IV the other night b/c she didn't pee once in a whole day.. We basically had to hold her down and use a syringe to give her gatorade and pedialyte.. She still fought us, so we ended up doing the IV instead. It's the only thing that worked for us... Good luck! I hope he feels better. Chat Icon

Re: Infant w the flu

Definitely keep him as hydrated as possible. If he isnt drinking anything and isn't producing any wet diapers I wouldn't hesitate to get him to the hospital. Not to scare you, its just that the biggest concern with an infant with the flu is dehydration. If he's wetting diapers and you're able to get some liquid in him then good! I'm sure the fever will drop a bit. Good luck and I hope he's all better soon!!Chat Icon

The FDA just approved Tamiflu for use in infants last week! Maybe let your Ped know bc they might have not seen the update yet!

It has to be given within 2 days of onset of flu symptoms, however.

So sorry about your baby. FYI: PM Pediatrics is open until midnight if you want to take him there. Much better than ER for a little baby. Hope he feels better soon Chat Icon

Re: Infant w the flu

Thanks everyone. I took him to PM Pediatrics. They said that a very high fever is expected with the flu Chat Icon Not much more I can do. They did prescribe tamaflu for him but otherwise we just have to wait it out. I feel so bad for him and I'm just SO exhausted! I hope it goes away soon. His fever varies from 100-104+

Re: Infant w the flu

My 12 month old DD has the flu now as well. Ped told me to make sure I keep rotating Tylenol and Motrin, she's running about 104 when the meds wear off, and goes down to 101 or so on Motrin. And I keep offering her formula so at least she's getting some kind of nutrition.
The ped version of tamiflu is backordered at a lot of places from what I understand, but I thought it was only approved for 12 months and older?

Re: Infant w the flu

Call you ped and ask when you need to go to the er. My nephew was sent to er at that temp and was told to continue with Motrin but I would still go so they check the lungs if not er follow up with ped. If they are not calling to see how your baby's feeling with a flu find a new office.

I would continue extra bottles for hydration
Light clothing
Run a humidifier in the room just so that the air is moist making coughs easier and loosens congestion
Buy infant/baby Vicks rub put behind ears neck chest this will help breathing
Continue cool compresses
Buy saline spray for infants
Have a nasal aspiration handy

I also for my baby elevated one side of her crib mattress slightly so she wasn't totally sleeping flat. I just put a few towels under the mattress.

Again if the fever reaches that high I would call the ped first emergency and ask to be seen its worth checking the lungs out. I hope your baby feels better soon!!

The ped version IS backordered EVERYWHERE i called 10 pharmacies! But, I found one that made it for me. They compounded the pills into a liquid form and an infant's dosage. They spoke to my ped about the dosage and it took about an hour for them to make it for me. Also, it was just approved for infants under 12 months last week

IS vicks safe for babies? I never used it and the peds never recommended it to us. How often do you use it? Just place it on the chest?

My dd who just turned 1 had the flu and REALLY bad as well. It took about 7 LONG days to get through. She was extemely cranky throughout. I gave lots of water. I think the milk was adding to the phlegm so I tried to lessen. I also put some chicken broth in her bottle and warmed up. Maybe you can try pedialyte as well. Until she started sneezing alot, it didnt gt better. She looked awful Around day 6/day 7 it really doesnt give up. Continue with motrin/tylenol like the dr encouraged. Good luck!
Just saw th post above me, I did use vicks rubbing creme on her chest and feet and I put the vicks vapor plug ins in every room. it did help as well.
On more thing...many people including myself who had this had to pay over 100 for the tamiflu AND it doesnt work if its over 48 hrs anyhow.
