The will feel more pain??? Do people really believe this? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

When it gets done at 6+ months it is done at a hospital and the child is put under anesthesia

That's not because that's when they magically start to feel pain at that point. It's hurts just as bad on day 1 as it does at 6 months.

They are put under anesthesia to prevent them from moving and because the procedure is done differently (with a scalpel instead of a board which takes longer)
Definitely not looking for a debate. Whatever each person chooses for their son is very personal and not for anyone else to judge.

I know why they do it. I was just shocked that some people actually believe that newborns feel less pain. That's all my comment was geared towards. I am not trying to start any debate. I wasn't the pro cutter commenting on a post about keeping a baby whole. I skip over all circumcision posts because I know I have nothing positive to add. I am just trying to support another mom whom wishes to keep her son whole and was shocked by the comment left. I never knew anyone actually believed that myth. No debates here Chat Icon

As long as you know what you want, your OB just needs to be told. We were undecided when DS was born. We talked to our OB about it, and made a decision based on our own feelings and what OB discussed.

We're 100% sure we aren't circumcising, for MANY reasons including that my DH isn't circumcised. I just didn't know if it was one of those things that the hospital will try to encourage us to do, bc they want to bill the insurance for additional expenses, etc.

I'm glad to hear nobody was faced with pressure one way or the other.

You mean, your husband is intact and it hasn't rotted off or needed to be removed from nasty infections from not cleaning himself properly?!? ShockingChat Icon Chat Icon I have heard many dumb myths since we chose to keep our son intact almost 3 years ago(also shocked at how often the topic even comes up). The things people believe that will happen still shock me.

Congrats on your little man! I hope you have a great delivery and that they never question your choices Chat Icon

I think the poster just meant that it is more of a procedure for the baby then. Which is fact.

They came and asked me the next am (I had it done tho)

I agree. Circumcision in the first few days just has risks from something going wrong from the cutting itself(like infections, excessive bleeding, loss of penis or injury to the penis itself). I understand that putting them under adds to the possibly of something going wrong. I am fully educated on this topic. But that has absolutely nothing to do with level of pain felt...

they will surely feel more pain at that point.

This sentence was the only sentence I was taken aback by. They will actually feel less pain, at least during the procedure... except the pain they feel while healing, that they still have to feel.

Our ped and OB both felt strongly against circs (we only found out because we said no to circ).

We got no pressure what so ever.

If you did NOT circumcise?

We were asked and said no thanks. Everytime a doc came in we were asked. They never had any problems with it and a few commented on how refreshing it was. Our nurse, on the other hand, was so against it that when he went for his hearing test we were sure she was taking him to have it done. She said oh don't worry the test won't take long adn then he'll see the xyz doc and be right back. We asked who xyz was and she said oh well you know he does the little boy things. We didn't even get a chance to say anything because the student nurse with us literally took our son out of the nurses arms and said Like hell you are. They said no and i'll be with him the entire time to make sure you respect their wishes. We called the nursing supervisor and explained everything. Our student nurse remained with us and we had a new nurse after that. I was so appaled she thought she had the right to just go and do!

I'm not trying to debate either, but you must realize that "personal and not for anyone else to judge" doesn't apply in the circ vs. intact debate from the pov of people who think circ is an unnecessary genital mutilation. That said, from my pov, I understand why it's done with the best intentions- parents that do it are obviously doing what they believe is best.

And this is my fear!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I had some pushy nurses last time when I delivered DD at St Charles, very opinionated on wanting to give my DD a pacifier when I said no, and insistent that I take formula even though I was EBF. Luckily this time I'm already feeling the mama bear instincts and will have not problem telling any nurse that she's out of line!! But I can't even believe that happened to you!!!!

My first son was circumcised and no one blinked an eye. My second son was left intact and everyone and their mother had horror stories to shareChat Icon I get that judgement will be had from both sides. I just don't see why people throw their 2cents in on a post where a woman is clearly not questioning her decision one bit, just asking some BTDT advice. I am not one to throw my 2cents in on circumcising topics, I avoid them actually. I am honestly not one of those debate intactavist. I have done both so I have seen both sides. I am not attacking anyone for their views.

I definitely see what you're saying. After I had ds, I had a "friend" on fb send me awful messages saying if I had my son circumcised, I was destroying him for life. She even went as far as to say if I circumcised him, I dont deserve to have children. I defriended her without reply. But them I have friends like the op who it's never even come up in conversation. If you did NOT circumcise?

I had my son thirteen years ago and it was rare to NOT circumcise. I was also only 17 when I had him (and looked about 12) so every nurse in the hospital was nasty, mean, and cruel to me in the hospital, except for my L&D nurse. I did not want him circumcised and was asked about it SO many times, pressured about it, that I thought they would really do it without my consent. I asked for a marker and wrote "DO NOT CIRC" on his breastfeeding card that was taped to the inside of the bassinette and across the top of the packet of papers that went back and forth between my room and the nursery. That was a long time ago, though... It seems as though things are different now.
