I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

But I don't want it to get nasty.

For the women of these boards, if you plan to vote for Romney, how do you reconcile his stand on womens issues?

I've asked this question of women I know. The answer I always get is "it isn't my first priority" or some variation of that. I'm really interested to see what people have to say because I honestly can't wrap my head around it.

I am baffled by that kind of response. Absolutely bafflled. *I* am my first priority, my health, my well being, my ability to protect myself, my ability to protect my body, having access to basic, female healthcare.

I hate to make a sweeping generalization, but I am having an internal debate over this. Is being a Republican female trumping the female consciousness? Is it a hypocrisy?

...a friend and I are literally having this exact conversation over gchat. And I know you and I have a mutual friend we both adore who is a staunch Republican. It is the one thing her and can not ever agree on.

I'm not a Romney supporter but I'm not personally affected by much of his stance but I still want to defend women's rights and health. I really feel we have to take care of each other and stand up for what's right.

I have had this discussion with a number of people and the answer is generally that its not their priority, that they think other issues are more important, and that the worst thing that will happen is Romney appointing SCOTUS justices who try to overturn R v W but that they dont think it will happen.

I guess for me I just don't want to give Romney, or anyone else for that matter, even half the chance to repeal Roe v. Wade, that would be enough for me if I were a Republican female to change my vote to someone else.

What would happen, if G*d forbid, it was actually repealed? What would they be saying then?

I honestly don't see anything that needs to be reconciled. Not in my mind. You (and Mer, and others) and I are wired differently in that regard, and that's OK.

As far as his comments about women in the workforce/equal pay/ the "binders" - I didn't see anything wrong with that. I wasn't offended, not in the least. Didn't give it a second thought. And that's OK too.

Maybe I'm just over-intellectualizing it Chat Icon I guess I just didn't know where most women stood on it.

I agree. For example I've never had to use the services of Planned Parenthood but for some women it's the only way they can get any kind of healthcare. So their existence is very important to me.

I suppose a Republican woman could counter with concerns about the economy, which affects us all v. concerns of the individual, and I respect that. But it's hard to see how women aren't still treated as second-class citizens in this country.

Re: I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I wonder this too when my female friends on FB show their support of R & R. These friends are women of childbearing age who use contraceptives, some I know of that have had abortions, some I know have used the services of Planned Parenthood for the morning after pill, some have daughters of their own. I wonder how they can ignore the fact that IF Romney takes office, he WILL have the opportunity to fill future vacant SCOTUS seats with the asses of people who share the same beliefs he does. The government has no room for religion.

If the definition of "life" is changed from birth to conception, women's rights become subordinate to that of the unborn child. Thus, women become 2nd class citizens.

Women's issues are my top priority because I am a woman and a mother to a daughter. I cannot support any candidate that supports redefining "life" to begin at conception.

And why is healthcare for women even being mitigated? We are the child bearers so we are penalized? If men could get pregnant it would be a given and billions would be thrown at it.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

I just have to say that I'm pretty surprised that more people haven't commented. It doesn't need to get nasty but I am genuinely curious to hear some responses, but now I am wondering if people are just pushing aside how they feel about this just to vote for Romney so Obama's not re-elected?

I think this is it. Or, as Liz said, to some it isn't a reconciliation. While that simply doesn't make sense to me, there isn't much I can say back to that.

I agree with this. I am not sure if I am a Romney supporter or not - I have never been been a fan of Obama, though I did vote for him in 2008. I actually thought Romney's answer on equality in the work place made a lot more sense than Obama's (not sure why this question was even asked and what a presidential candidate would necessarily do about it), but thought it showed that Romney does have experience in the private sector and the concerns he pointed out that many women have are real ones. So in a way, I actually thought this question made Obama seem out of touch - maybe because he has no experience in the private sector, and government jobs often have different demands than those in the private sector.

[Edited to write that I have never been an Obama supporter - left out "never" the first time]

Exactly, and I think that as women we should be able to have this kind of discourse no matter what side we feel we're on. Whether we agree on the same stance or can agree to disagree, I think that women should be having this discussion because no matter what it will be affecting us.

I really need to ask this question about Romney's politics...

for me, im more concerned with other issues. when i ask myself am i any better than i was 4 years ago....NO WAY! my husbands salaray was cut due to obama interfering with his industry, im still unemployed, my health ins. has skyrocketed, my house is worth so much less than what i paid for it, gas and other prices are ridiculous.

I can not take another 4 years of obama. I can look past romney's views on women bc i need to worry about my FAMILY and our financial future.

i dont like either candidate, but 4 more years of the same thing just doesnt sit well with me.

Thanks for your response. I can appreciate that you have other concerns that are factors in your decision. I also think that this is such a thoroughly feminine way of thinking, to sacrifice something for the greater good of your family.

From my Romney voting friend, "The economy is my priority. Choice & gay marriage are important but not as important as the economy".

This is from someone who had pay reductions 4 years ago & was brought whole this past year because the company was doing better.

I see what is being said here. However, for me personally, even if I was a parent (and as a wife), I would want my vote to go to someone who would work to uphold my rights as a woman, which are also the rights of my future daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. If I can't know that I will be able to receive the healthcare I need that is so vital to my existence, the other things don't matter much. I think women's rights impact ALL the other issues - employment (equal pay, maternity leave policies, etc.) taxes (health care, again with equal pay) obviously healthcare as its own issue as well. While I respect that there are other concerns, for me they are all so closely intertwined that nothing can be prioritized over my rights as a woman.
