Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article
seriously? i don't have any kids and i can tell you shamelessly that i wear nothing but sweats when i am at home. the instant i walk in the door, suit comes off, jammies go on. on the weekends, i don't put jeans on unless i'm going somewhere that warrants it... which doesn't include the grocery store. should i feel bad if i go to the mall in yoga pants? Ffffff that. I am 100% sure this won't change when I do have kids. And if Newsday wants to judge me, GO RIGHT AHEAD.

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article
I don't think the OP or article was meant to offend anyone. I think it was just giving a few helpful tips to women to make them feel better about the way they look after a baby. I also have a very needy baby and fell off. It wasn't until my older one said "mom you don't even take care of yourself anymore," that I snapped out of it. I just didn't feel good about myself, clothes didn't fit, didn't have time, etc... So I made some changes. Now I set my clothes out the night before after kids are in bed and yes sometimes I have to try on a few outfits until I find something that looks nice. I take a shower at night and leave everything ready the night so in the morning I just throw on my clothes. I have to bring DD in the bathroom with me while I put on lipstick, and curl my lashes (makes me look awake) and do my hair which usually consists of a bun or ponytail but atleast it looks neat. My point is that it can be done IF you want it, you just have to find your own way. If I knew how much better I would feel about myself I would've made an effort sooner.

me too. . . And I really don't care what others have to say. If *I* am secure enough to go out in sweats, why do other people care?

Me personally I dont like looking frumpy and that to me is sweats etc only because I find that for ME it brings me down emotionally. When I dress up, put on makeup, my hair is nice and shiny and I have on nice clothes I feel great. this is me as well But I don't care what other moms wear (well, the only thing that bothers me is when people wear pajamas out, but that's about it) who cares and it's really noone's business....

Okay, this writer clearly never had a young child of their own or did so long ago that he/she forgot things. Or has extremely limited contact with dC.
Wear earrings?!? Are you kidding me? When DS was little I would have lost one or both earlobes.
Heels? Must be a joke. Going to the grocery store or the park and chasing after a toddler hell bent on self-destruction does not warrent heels.
And the Mom jeans, not attractive, I agree, but I got tired of showing people my crack everytime I played on the floor with DS.
So true...
I have to say - now that I got my body back and am looking and feeling more fit, I feel very confident in a cute pair of nice sweats and a fitted shirt, not to mention i'm nice and comfy. I wear nice accesories when I have time. I always look put together!

I'll probably get flamed to h#ll for saying this, but after 5 years of parenthood, I've found the biggest way to avoid looking frumpy is to lose the baby weight as fast as possible.
When you have the excess weight, that's when you start relying on the sweats and the mom jeans and the giant t-shirts. To hide everything.
If you're thin, everything looks better than you, even if it's not expensive or new. A fitted t-shirt and yoga pants or jeans look great if you're at a good weight and in decent shape.
No flames here!!!! I think I made more of an effort before I lost the weight. Now that I'm back in shape, I don't feel like I have to. I totally get it!!!

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article
I dress and wear make up every day. I do, however, have a "uniform". I generally wear jeans, a tank and cute cardigan. If it's cold I wrap a pashmina around my neck. If there is snow on the ground I wear Uggs or knee hi flat boots. Otherwise it's nicer ballet flats. This Summer I invested in a bunch of cute, ruffle tanks and fun cardigans from Loft, Old Navy and J Crew. I'm comfy, but not shlumpy.

The writer of this article needs a reality check. They can borrow my rambunctious, curious, & needy 1 year old + his 30 year old father & get back to us after a week.

The most polished, beautiful attractive thing there is is a dedicated mommy who tends to her children's needs before her own. What she wears is irrelevant--truly.

I don't know, I don't think the writer was looking to offend anyone.
I don't think there's anything wrong with putting some effort into how you look - for yourself as much as for your husband and child(ren). And it has nothing to do with being a "trophy wife". I think it has more to do with showing that you care - about yourself.

Thank you. I never meant my posts to insult anyone but I truly believe that it is possible because I have been there. Maybe I am a bad mother but I can't see taking 25 minutes to put on a bra either. The baby will be fine crying for 2 minutes while you do that. Sorry.

ITA with you. I just don't get the "I don't have time". The things we are speaking of are 1, 2 minute things, not a half hour or an hour to do. Maybe my priorities are different than others but getting myself dressed everyday was important to me and it took no time to do it. I see nothing wrong with sweats either but not ones that were slept in the night before or pj's all day after sleeping in them all night.

ITA with you. If you ever see how the order should be in your life it is 1. You 2. Your Dh 3. Your children
That does NOT mean you don't take care of your children, especially when they need you BUT you need to take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

You are okay with letting your baby cry for 2 mins , but some people aren't comfortable with putting down their crying child. I am really perplexed by the fact that you claim that you never meant to offend and continue to end your posts with such sentiments. Can't we all just accept that we have different priorities.

Whatever. I guess no one is getting the point. If you complain, it means you are unhappy. If I am unhappy, I find every possible way to make myself happy.

I don't understand why people are getting so offended. The article doesn't say you SHOULDN'T be frumpy, it's giving you tips if you don't WANT to be frumpy.
