I dont know if its just me but I barely see "frumpy moms" anymore. I have not seen the "type" of lady this article describes very often once in a blue moon if that.

I don't understand why people are getting so offended. The article doesn't say you SHOULDN'T be frumpy, it's giving you tips if you don't WANT to be frumpy.

Whatever. I guess no one is getting the point. If you complain, it means you are unhappy. If I am unhappy, I find every possible way to make myself happy.

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article

Mom of 3 here and I try and do my best not to appear "frumpy" for no one else but myself. I just feel better about myself if I've showered, done my makeup, hair and I have some sort of heel on. It also helps me maintain my weight/shape because I am more conscious about how I appear and fit into my clothes, so I tend to watch what I eat. (Based on my own experience, when I wore more casual, looser fitting clothes, I would put on weight easily.)

I own 2 pairs of sweat pants and I won't even take the garbage down to the street in them. I'll throw on a pair of jeans if I need to leave the house.

I'll admit that I often feel dolled up when compared to other moms and I'm not even dressed up (just jeans, a fitted shirt and a heel.) And sometimes I wonder what they think about me because of it. A lot of the moms I know wear yoga pants or some type of workout clothes, but I just assumed they were going to, or coming from working out. I never gave it much more thought other than that.

That being said, there are days where if I'm not going to leave the house and I'm cleaning or what have you, I won't shower and will wear my junky jeans or sweats...BUT I also feel like crap about myself the whole day and find myself apologizing to my DH for looking the way I do, despite him not caring and totally understanding. Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article

For the record, some sweat pants can be more stylish than some jeans.
I have gone out shopping in sweats that looked very nice.
And I have seen some jeans that look God awful.
So I don't think they should be crucifying the sweat pants.
It's all relative!

I could have written this word for word...although you are much more stylish then I.

As a former mom of 2 under 2, it was for my sanity that I woke up early and showered, put on makeup and did my hair every day.

Frumpy:
Unshowered
Messy hair
dirty clothes
Clothes that don't fit.

But not wearing jewerly, no make up (how did our great grandmothers survived without it? Realy!!!) or no heels (apparently this person never chased a toddler or did errands as fast as possible before a meltdown) DOES NOT make you frumpy.

It takes the same amount of time to dress as sweats as to wear a cute t-shirt with cute comfy capris/skorts and cute flats. A lot of casual clothing can be comfy AND cute.

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article

I think it's how you carry yourself in what you wear - not just what you wear.

I have seen moms all dressed up with makeup and still not look put together.

I have seen moms go out wihtout a stitch of makeup in casual clothes and look gorgeous....

Why is this such an issue? If someone tells me I should put more time into dressing myself up, I ignore it. I dress up when I feel like it, i dress down when I feel like it.

I have my makeup days while wearing sweats - sometimes I like to mix it up.

I work out so much now, sometimes it is just easier to stay dressed in my gym clothes if I plan to get there later....

Have you seen Lululemon yoga pants? They are gorgeous (not that I have a pair Chat Icon )

Yes...actually I was just looking at them since they carry tall Chat Icon , but I still wouldn't wear them out and about. But again, it's just personal preference.

ETA: I like my heels (I feel "finished" in them) and they just don't work with the yoga pants. Chat Icon

Can I just ask -- what the heck are "mom jeans"? Speaking only for myself -- I can't wear low rise....it ALWAYS feels like I have to pull my pants up. just below the waist is what is comfortable and what looks GOOD on me....if that is considered "frumpy", I don't give a rat's arse.....

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article

I personally think that this article is rather silly. First of all the heels thing is kind of funny! I mean come on, I would die laughing if i saw a mom at the park in heels. Second, the earring thing could actually send you to the ER.

But beyond that, i try to work out three to four times per week so should i not run errands on my way to or from the gym in my gym clothes? Who cares what i am wearing at the supermarket or the pharmacy as long as i don't smell? And NO ONE wants to see me in a fitted tee until I have a chance to lose the muffin top I still have from having my second child four months ago.

After having my second child i got much better at prioritizing. I take my son to school while i am still in the black sweats i wore to bed the night before. Then I go home and shower while my daughter naps. I had more of a problem managing my time with thhe first than trying to juggle two but i can totally remember going days with only a quick shower at night to just change pajamas.

It's when the jeans come all the way up to your boobies!
Not like what you described- just below the waist.
Mom jeans are more like- just under your bra.

Re: How to avoid dressing like a frumpy mom Newsday Article

It makes no difference to me what others wear.

For myself, I have standards that I hold myself to whether I have kids or not - I like to keep in shape, dress and feel a certain way and I do it for myself and no one else. And this will be this way now, when I'm PG, after I give birth, and always - it's just me.
