I'm sorry but IMO it sounds crazy to try and drop a feeding for a ten week old (even worse, five adjusted) and expect them to "sttn". To me, sleepless nights are a part of motherhood, lol. I know it sucks but it's a part of the baby package.

Again, they are not missing a feeding.. they are already sleeping 8 hours.. but it starts earlier than we'd like. They will be eating the exact same amount.

You asked us and now you don't seem to want to hear the opinion (popular opinion) that you don't cio, sleep train, bottle adjust, whatever you want to call it- such a very young baby. Sorry, but this is the answer that most people will give you. Obviously your ped thinks it's okay but you wouldn't have posted if you didn't have doubt.

I think that what you are talking about isn't really CIO.

I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to get them to do the bulk of their sleeping at night, but I think that 20 minutes is a long time to let them truly cry at this age.

What I did with DD was try to keep her up as long as possible at that age. I don't think I put her down in the bassinet to 'sleep' until around midnight. Then I would get a nice long 6+ hour stretch out of her.

Do you want to share your current feeding schedules with us to see if there are any tips?

I EBF, but DD would kind of cluster feed on her own later in the day, sort of bulking up for sleeping a longer stretch at night.

Good luck!

We did CIO at 5 months and it was the best thing we ever did. I would have not felt comfortable doing it much earlier, but my kids were preemies and weight was (is) an issue.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

I think you really need to go by their adjusted age here. Developmentally, they are 5 weeks old - and their weights are small for even that age, which is obviously normal for preemies.

I know you are exhausted, and I am so sorry for that, I've been there and it SUCKS. But right now I really don't think they are waking out of habit, they are truly hungry and need to eat when they wake.

This will pass, I promise, and when they are screaming their heads off chasing each other around your living room this will seem like an incredibly distant memory. IT GETS BETTER!! Right now you just have to struggle through. At 5 weeks, they need to know that when they cry you'll be there for them with a snuggle and food.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

If you don't mind sharing your schedule with them, maybe we can offer some suggestions.

The first 3-4 months of twin mommy-hood is pure torture.

My ped told us to CIO at 4 months and 14 lbs, so I do agree that they are a bit young for a true CIO (which doesn't seem to be exactly what you're asking about anyway).

We did CIO at 7 months which was 5 months adjusted for us.

I agree with the previous posters who suggested keeping them up later. Its great that they are giving you a long stretch of sleep already. I would keep them up until maybe 9 or 10 pm. Give them their last bottle then, and then go right to bed when they go down so you can get some much needed rest.

awww, thanks for this! Believe it or not, once we got past the 8 week mark, things have gotten remarkably easier. I never thought Id be able to say that!! They sleep much longer, I just wish it were at a different time. Thats when the ped suggested trying to feed them later so we get a later stretch.
I couldnt believe I told DH that I was going to miss the middle of the night feedings because then it means this newborn stage might be over.

Overall, Im not ready because I dont think they are ready.. I was surprised he suggested it so I figured Id ask some other moms.

Thanks for the kind words and support. Chat Icon

I think you're right about it not being CIO

Baby A-weights 8.4 lbs

8 am-3 oz

11 am 3 oz

2 pm-3 oz

5 pm- 3 oz

then either 7 or 8 pm 3 oz (maybe 3.5)

then they sleep from anywhere between 6-8 hrs.

And then the cycle repeats every 3 hours (roughly)

Baby B weighs 9.7 lbs

same time, but eats 4.5 oz at every feeding.

so they are both eating more than 2x's their weight and put out 8+ wet diapers a day.

how much do they weigh?

8.4 and 9.7

too little Chat Icon my son was born weighing 8.7lbs and would sleep no more than 5-6 hours through the night until about 12lbs! There is some magic about 12-13lbs - they can go much longer stretches of time once they reach that weight.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

At 8 weeks old my son was waking once a night. I decided to let him cry for a few minutes and gave him the pacifier instead. He didn't even cry for 5 minutes (and not full fledge cry either) and he's been sttn ever since.

I wouldn't wait 20 minutes. But i'd give it 5-10 minutes and see what happens. Chat Icon

Try waking them just for a dream feeding at like 10:30- 11. we did this for months and it did help. I know you said you did it once, I would do it for a week or so and see what they do. you are VERY lucky to be getting 6-8 hours at any point in the day or night. We were every 3 hours for MONTHS after they cam home from the nicu.

The first 6 months is very rough for us twin mommies.

Of course they made a liar out of me and woke up at 10 on their own for a bottle.

This is a routine I can work with lol. Id like to hear about how you did the dream feed. did you unswaddle? Diaper change? Turn lights on, etc?

when they were that little I didnt feel that it mattered if there was a marching band in the room. They just went back to sleep. However, as they became more alert, we did change their diaper and immediately re swaddle them with the lights low. That is how we did all of the night time feedings. If it was a time where in the future we would want them to be asleep, then there was no talking, a tight swaddle and very low lights.
