How old is old enough to CIO?

Just came back from the pediatrician and we were discussing getting up in the middle of the night to feed the girls. They are 10 weeks, 5 weeks adjusted. He suggested feeding them at 10 pm (waking them up if they are sleeping) and then when they wake up at 3 am for their usual feeding, wait 20 minutes. If I can bear it, let them keep going until they fall back to sleep. If I can't bear it, feed them... but make sure I dont turn on any lights or interact with them. He said after a week, they'll get the picture and not wake up anymore.
My husband is totally on board but I feel like they're a little too young for this.
Just curious when you attempted to CIO with your LOs.

Thanks for all your responses.. i also feel it's young but ETA**that the babies would not be losing a feeding. We would be waking them at 10pm to eat so the amout that they are eating does not change.
We are just trying to set their sleeoing schedules to start at 10pm instead of 7 pm... this way they would sleep from 10 pm-6 pm instead of 7pm to 3 am.

I can see letting them go 5-10 minutes to see if they'll fall back to sleep. DD doesn't get too worked up when she wakes so I sometimes give her a few minutes to see. After a few minutes I would definitely feed them at that age though! DD is 7 months and I haven't gotten myself to do CIO yet.

Hi!! Sorry I haven't been in touch!

My ped said not to CIO until 4 months....but that was for soothing, not for nighttime feeding.

Are your girls at the weight they need to be for 10 week-olds?

I would think that would be a big factor.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

We started stretching out feedings by ten minutes every night until we eliminated the middle of the night bottle and started that around 12 weeks actual. I didn't attempt Cio. until DS was 4 months adjusted. I think 10 weeks is a little early but that is just my opinion.

I still don't like letting DS cry and he is 8 months old!!

We did CIO at 5.5 months and I thought it was young. I am a big CIO proponent (for the right kid) but IMHO I think 10 weeks is much too young.

Have you tried a dream feed instead?

10 weeks is too young. We didnt do it until 6 months & that was for sleeping in crib. As far as eating goes, they will adjust on there own when ready. We did as your Dr suggested & fed them right before bed. We did it at 11pm though

Tried it but only once and they still woke up at the exact same time.. that's how I know it's only out of habit.

I would still sooth them and feed them at this age. We did CIO at about 5 1/2 months. Once they are old enough I would gradually stretch out the length of time you go in to respond to them.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

Letting them cry for a few minutes is totally fine but true cio? Imo no way. If u google cry it out method or ferber method most say 5 or 6 months. I am kinda shocked your ped would suggest it at such an early age. Again though 5 or 10 minutes is fine but they are learning to trust you and I bet they are hungry bc they are growing so fast!

This.

I did CIO with DS at 6 months and it took a long time.

I have been doing it with DD starting at 7 months and she is responding well to it.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

I feel that 10 weeks is way too young. I feel that even 6 months can be way too young. I'm not a huge fan, but did modify it for my girls. we did that at 10.5 months/8 adjusted

I would try the dream feed again. That is the only thing that saved our sanity. That and always waking the other girls if one of them woke.

Another thing to consider (and I think we go to the same ped, but I could be remembering that wrong) Is that our ped does not adjust. I love that office and the drs, but when I went back to see the neonatologists from the nicu they were appalled to find out that the peds office did/do not adjust. They begged me to always adjust the 2+ months with all areas.

edited: I looked back and I dont think we go to the same ped, but it is something to think about.

6 months. I would never consider it younger then 5ish months. Many time (especially with premies or babies of low birth weight) they NEED feedings at night up until 6+ months!

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

personally i think 10 weeks is too early...did you try giving a pacifier instead of a bottle? that worked for me and DS would just fall back asleep.

Re: How old is old enough to CIO?

We did a modified CIO at 5 months and the earliest I've ever heard of a ped recommending was 4 months.

10 weeks old is really young for CIO (and for 5 weeks adjusted it just feels wrong). That's a long time to expect babies that little to go without eating. They go through so many growth spurts at this age. Personally I would keep trying the dream feed.

DS is 3 months and he still wakes up 2x a night to eat and I will feed him... now I'm starting to think this isn't normal? ITA 10 weeks seems a little young.

I'm sorry but IMO it sounds crazy to try and drop a feeding for a ten week old (even worse, five adjusted) and expect them to "sttn". To me, sleepless nights are a part of motherhood, lol. I know it sucks but it's a part of the baby package.

I dont think its "not normal" I think every baby is different. I have friends who have babies around the same age and all do different things.

Again, they are not missing a feeding.. they are already sleeping 8 hours.. but it starts earlier than we'd like. They will be eating the exact same amount.
