Alternatives to CIO for 5 month old?

DS had been STTN since 8 weeks old (he's a belly sleeper) but recently had a bad night due to teething where he got up a few times and I had to give him Tylenol and nurse him back to sleep. Ever since, he's been waking up 2-3 times every night and the only thing that will calm hims and get him to go back down is nursing. I've tried giving him a paci and rubbing his back but that doesn't work.

I've tried doing CIO on two separate occasions already and only lasted about 10 minutes max. DH and I agree that CIO is NOT for us, we can't handle hearing DS cry like that. Are there any other types of sleep training methods besides CIO?

TIA!!

Re: Alternatives to CIO for 5 month old?

I went through this with Kieran too when he first started teething badly. He was waking up usually once a night, on occasion, 2 or 3 times. I just always nursed him because he would fall back asleep in like 5 minutes, and it was instant relief (we can't handle listening to him cry either- hence why we never did CIO). Then after like a week or so of him continuing to wake up and me nursing him back to sleep, I was afraid he was going to start waking up just from needing that nursing since his body would get used to it. So now, when he wakes up, I go into him, and first rub his belly, give him his paci, and if that doesn't calm him, I pick him up. Then I just hold him so he's like side-lying in my arms, and I rock him and walk around his room. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes to get him calm enough, but then I put him back in his crib and he usually goes right to sleep. Sometimes, I'll just let him fall asleep in my arms and then put him down. HTH!

Re: Alternatives to CIO for 5 month old?

I did this with ds at 3m when he started teething:

if he woke up crying, id basically wait till it sounded serious, the minute it did, id go in calm him to a soft whine, doing as little as possible, at the worst I picked him up and rock him, then put him down and repeat, but always putting him downn awake. Took hours for him to go back, but I feel like through the proocess he learned to soothe himself withoutmuch trauma. In 2 weeks he was sttn.
I read a book that described this as the no-cry method, but also warned it was a much slower way than cio.

He's pretty good now, except our iissue is rolling over and getting stuck now, which is when he gets upset. Honestly I tried cio for nap, I lasted 1.5 hrs of babbling, then whining, the .5t hrs at the end traumatized me. I'm the biggest advocate for cio, but I'm having major issues following though, myself.

Thanfully it takes ds now only a couple of mins of crying, to fall asleep, even if he gets himself stuck in the most awkward position. If it lasted longer I don't knnow what I would do, except pick him up and rock him.
