Re: 4mth old and CIO
IMO 4 months is too young. I didn't do CIO but from what I understand, I think most people don't start until at least 6 months or so.
Good luck.

Personally I think its too young, I didn't do it til 8 mos and DS woke no less than twice a night til then. I remember seeing a few threads where pediatricians are telling moms to do it younger lately though.

Re: 4mth old and CIO
I was told by my ped and learned thru the sleeping books that I have read, that CIO should be started no earlier than 6 months old. At 4 months, babies need to feel secure and have their needs tended to, as their ability to self soothe is not developed yet. If you are looking for a fantastic book for all ages and stages, pick up Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. It is amazing and answers a lot of questions/problems one may have with trying to get their LO to sleep.

I could be wrong, but Ithink I remember a passage that talks about CIO earlier, I think 3m. Still check it out, its a great book. Brought to light for me why I have so many sleep problems as an adult.
Another book, that I recommend a lot is, baby sleep solution by Giordano. I started sleep training ds at 11w, he was sleeping 8 hours a night by 3m, we are up to 10 hours sttn at 5m. He goes down for naps on schedule, and can sleep almost anywhere when its his time to. The book is a system, not a lot of theory, but a lot oof examples. The sleep habits book is a natural complement
Eta: I didn't do cio, but I diid lethim fuss it out a little, he learned to put himself to sleep, I've watched him do it in the middle of the night during one of my many insomniatic moments and was actually jealous lol
