How independent are you?

Do you go on trips by yourself without your husband.

There is a gtg going on in Virginia with some friends from the knot and I want to go but obviously I can only afford it for me.

My husband is not having it, he says that I can go but he doesn't approve.Chat Icon

w th?

I have never gone anywhere without him, i need to do things on my own too.

What do you think?

Re: How independent are you?

Thanks Jenn, I told him that if he ever wanted to go away somewhere he could. it doesn't bother me.
I don;t understand, he is just too damn protective.
He treats me like a little girl sometimes.

I would go if I were you. Since I was a little older when I met DH I had to do a lot of things by myself, traveling included. I am sure you will find it a great experience.

Re: How independent are you?

DH and I are both really independent. We realize that we came into this relationship as two individuals and we really strive to always allow each other freedom to be who we are. I mean that is the person I feel in love with why would I want to change that?

i think DH wishes i'd go away more often Chat Icon

i think we're pretty independant when it comes to the big things- i've gone away with the girls, he's gone away with the guys a few times...

but its the little things that we're annoying about- i drag him to the mall, he drags me to run errands- those are the things we need to work on.

Re: How independent are you?

I've gone away for a week to VA. but with Marissa. DH went away w/ Marissa also for 10 days. I honestly enjoyed being alone for a few days & made us miss each other, I think being away is a good thing to chill or just be alone.

Re: How independent are you?

We are both pretty independent, DH more so than me though. Honestly, if I wanted to go to Cancun for a weekend with the girls, DH would probably have a BIG problem with that and I would feel the same if it was him. Certain types of vacations, IMO, can be inappropriate after you are married.

BUT...in YOUR case, I think you should go and he should be able to be okay with it. Something like that DH and I wouldn't have a problem. I mean...it's a bunch of knotties getting together - nothing threatening about that at all! What is he afraid of... that's you'll end up on a "Knotties Gone Wild" tape?? I highly doubt it! Chat Icon

I've taken about 3 trips without DH since we've been together (we weren't married yet though) and he's taken 3 without me also. So yeah, we do it with no problems... it all depends on the trip (and sometimes, who's going!)

Well said. I have gone on lots of trips without DH. I went to Paris with my family, I did a month in Europe after the bar, I went to my college reunion in Boston and I have been to Boston to visit my college friends. I went to P-town to visit some other college friends... teh list could go on and on. We do a lot together also- but sometimes you need to do your own thing. Not to mention my girly weekends or my reunion or hanging with old friends, DH would be SO BORED!!! Not to mention the reunion when you come home is so HOT!

ETA: I think its important for couples to spend time apart. It makes the relationship stronger. I couldn't deal if I felt DH was smothering me. I don't need DH's approval for things like this. He has to trust me and, especially once we have kids, I told him I am going to need some time to myself- to do my girly things and bond with my friends. He understands and looks forward to some alone time with our kid.

Re: How independent are you?

I go away without my husband, whether it's with my cousins or my girlfriends for the weekend. I actually went to Florida with my mom 2 weeks ago for 5 days. 5 days was too long though, I missed him too much.
He goes away too - hunting, off-roading, skiing, or to help his friend build his house upstate with the boys. I don't mind.

We are both very independent. We have always been. We have our time together and our time with our friends. You need to do things on your own.

I am very independent.

FH went to FL to visit his parents last weekend and he called me a lot which was fine, but when I was at my friends house, he wanted me to sleep over there if I drank, he was worried another night when I went out after work that I was going to be on the train alone, etc. I think hes overprotective.

So he lets me do what I want but makes me a little insane in the process!

Re: How independent are you?

My solo days are over. DH works a lot, so I always went without him. Well, I went on a cruise this summer solo, drank too much(went with my mother, she caused me to drink) and blacked out twice. DH feels like I should have been cutoff and no one did it. So I have to lay low for awhile. I am going to my sister's house in Philadelphia in 2 weeks for a few days, but DH decided a few days ago that he is going too. Which I am very happy about.

Have you met these people in VA before?

Leo is overly concerned with safety, and even would hate the thought of me meeting up with online friends in the city. If Will's issue is trusting you, then I would be mad. If his issue is his daughter's mother's safety, then I probably would stay home. Unless, you know these people, then it is different.

Assuming you are meeting up with friends, people you already know- I dont think there should be an issue. If its people you haven't met yet- then that's totally different. YOu don't know if they are normal, killers, or just a little crazy like us Chat Icon

Re: How independent are you?

We prefer to take vacations together but also do long weekends and such apart. I travel a lot for work. He goes to Myrtle Beach every year with the guys and goes to a titty bar. Whatever...

I say take a stand and go on the trip. Assure him you will be available on the cell.
