Going Rate for Babysitters
Hi. I need a teenage girl to stay with my 10-year-old daughter one Wednesday evening for about 5 hours (5:30 PM to 10:30 PM). I figure they would have pizza, sit around watching TV/You-Tube and then my daughter would go to bed around 9:30.
What do you think the going rate would be?
Thanks!

Re: Going Rate for Babysitters
$15-20/hr is typical but if your daughter is older, maybe $12/hr.

$60 for the night.
This! The level of care required by a 10 year old is not nearly the same as younger kids, so I don't think this warrants $15-20 at all. That is nuts!

Yeah, but you have to make it worthwhile for them too. When my son was 6 I had a sitter for 1 hour per day - max 1.5 hours (she was 16) and I paid her a flat fee of $100 a week.
I would say $15 or so an hour

My original thought was $10/hour, but then we'd give a little tip, so it would be $60 for the night. But, the girl I found said it's $15 per hour. It's only once, because DH and I have to go somewhere, so I'll pay the $75. But, IMO, it seems high for her to just sit around watching TV with a 10-year-old. It's not like she's changing diapers or cutting grapes in half for a toddler.
I just wanted to see if I wasn't just cheap!

Greed...I mean what would she be doing otherwise? Not making $60, that's for sure! Probably sitting on Instagram and snapchat all night

Wow, $15 an hour for that??
We pay $10 or $12 depending on who we use. That's pretty high if you ask me
can you find someone else? If you use her and pay that rate, you're locked in at that rate any time you want to use her in the future

Yeah but that's different since it was an ongoing thing and she was taking the time out of each and everyday for it!

I read it wrong, I thought she meant every Wednesday.
I do still think $15/hr though

Re: Going Rate for Babysitters
I think $10/hour is fair particularly bc you only have one child who sounds self-sufficient and the sitter is a teen. I'd pay just the $50 for that.

Yeah, I'm a babysitter overpayer and I think $50 is fine for what she's doing.

Re: Going Rate for Babysitters
Unfortunately it seems like the going rate is 12-15 an hour. All I ask of a sitter is to make sure my kids don’t kill each other. I have a 10 and 4 year old. Even before I tell people that I have two kids, they tell me 15 an hour. 99 percent of the time, I go out after dinner and so all my kids do is watch tv or play video games. I have 2 sitters that charge 10 and 1 that charges 15. I always call the ones that charge 10 first and I always make sure to give more (round up etc) at the end of the night. The one that charges 15 I always make sure to come home as quick as I can and never give more than it is. Ironically the ones that charge 10 are always more interactive with my boys.

I kinda feel that these teenagers are going to be in for a rude awakening when they get a real job. I think they expect that they will get whatever salary they ask, and that's definitely not the case (at least in my experience).

Right?! Go get a job at the mall and they will make about $9 an hour after taxes! These kids are nuts. Daycare workers don't even get paid $15 an hour

DD is 15 works abt 8 hours BOTH sat and sun and gets $70 per day plus a little in tips. I told her to get on the books since min wage is going up in January and start putting in for social security. I think the owner isnt paying her enough. No breaks and on her feet ALL day. She gets to eat for free though.

Depends on where you live. $12 on LI. $15 an hour in NYC if the company employs more than 11 people

Tipped food service workers is $7.50 an hour. Is your daughter a server?

Exactly, so we have NO problem paying high school kids $15 an hour to play on their phones while kids are asleep but god forbid we pay a higher minimum wage to hardworking adults trying to raise families.

Exactly!!!
We need to raise the minimum wage for all working people if so many of us are uncomfortable paying less than $15/hour to a teenager babysitting one school aged child.
