Re: Forehead Thermometer?
You mean the strip one that you press on the forehead? I got one at CVS and I swear by it for quick general temp taking.

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
Honestly I think they are horrible. Some people like them, I don't. I think the ear thermometer is more accurate. Everytime I have taken DS to PM Pediatrics and they use the forehead thermometer it is off horribly from what his true temp. is.

No I mean to thermometer you swipe on the child's forehead.
Jellybean: which ear one do you have? I know rectal temps are best, but my kids won't go for it anymore (ages 4 and 2)

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
Hi! Haven't seen you on here in a while!
We have a forehead one - Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer. Ehh it is okay I guess. There is a way to do it that it is more accurate but you have to go really slow and they can't move at all which is tricky. I find if I do it right it is a slightly less than a rectal. What I do is take it that way and IF they look like they have a fever I will then take it the other way to get an accurate reading.

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
truthfully...I find those foreheard ones soo inaccurate. I just took DD to the ped the other day and took her temp rectally before I left...she had 103.5....at the dr the foreheard thing told them 101.2 - way off. This has happened before too. I just dont think they are very good. JMO

I have this one as well.
Thankfully, DS hasn't really had a temperature yet. When I've used it, he was normal. The peditrician told me to get a rectal for when he's sick though- they said they are most accurate.

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
Thanks girls! I know my ped says the same thing that only rectal is truly accurate. Glad I didn't pick up the forehead one in CVS today. I think I'm going to skip it.

ITA! I had the Exergen one and found it to be several degrees off. I wound up throwing it out.

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
we use this one
Its so easy to use, I take his temperature every day, and I know when something is off. I also take mine every day and its always in sync with the under the tongue thermometers.

It's the Braun digital ear thermometer. I've had it since DS was born and it has always been accurate, maybe only .1 or .2 difference than rectal.

Re: Forehead Thermometer?
the exergen one is tricky but if you know how to do it, its very accurate.
you have to start on the middle of the forehead and depress the button. keep holding the button down and move it slowly to the side of the head across the temple. if you hear fast beeping, its still finding a temp, if you hear slow beeping, the temp is done.
it took me a while to figure it out. you can also use it to take temp behind the earlobe that thats usually 1degree higher than actual temp

I agree with this. It can be tricky at first but once you get use to it I find it to be very accurate. I mean it might be off by .2 or .3 but to me that doesn't really make much of a difference in temperature.

I knew how to use it. I'm actually in the healthcare field so I'm aware where the temporal artery is and how it runs. I followed the directions to a T. I always compared it to rectal readings and it was not just a little off. It was off at least 2 degrees. Several other moms here have had issues with their Exergens as well. Just my $.02.

i am a nurse, and where i work, we threw all of ours out. They are very accurate if your technique is 100% : when does that ever happen though? hardly ever. rectal temps are the way to go

I have this one and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It has saved me with my 3 yr old. At first, I didn't know how to use it and found it to not be accurate but, once i learned how to do it right i find it to be VERY accurate. I always test it after shots on my DD (since she is 9 mos - much easier to get a rectal) and I find it to be VERY close to the rectal reading like i will get 99.5 and 99.7 or something like that.
It is a problem if they don't sit perfectly still the whole time as a pp mentioned. But, now, I tell my DS - sit or I am going to have to do the thermometer in the butt. He sits still for as long as I need.
