Does it surprise you....
Does it surprise you how many people still smoke? I've never been a smoker, and I don't claim it to be an easy habit to kick, but I honestly can't believe how many people still smoke....
At this point you have to be living under a rock to not know the damage smoking can cause. Why take the risk? Please save the speach about people who've never smoked getting lung cancer... we know smoking increases your chances...
I bring this up because this morning as I was walking to work from Penn, I was basically trapped in a smoke box. Everywhere I moved to the person infront of me was puffing away and blowing smoke back into my face.
I understand people have the right to smoke, I am just surprised by how many people still exercise that right...

Yes. Especially my mom... with each pregnancy/new grandchild she says she is going to quit... hasn't happened yet. And she recently had a cancer scare which turned out to be nothing. But she STILL continues to smoke.

Same here with my mom AND my grandmother.
DH still smokes once in awhile too- I HATE it- and he's a hypochondriac who thinks he has every illness in the book. You'd think he'd be afraid to smoke.
I just don't get it.

Yes. I wish my sister would quit.
What really gets to me is when I drive into work every day and every day I see nurses/doctors/hospital staff puffing away outside of the hospitals. That really bothers me.
No offense to anyone of course!

Re: Does it surprise you....
My step-father smokes like a CHIMENY!! He watched his father carry around an oxygen tank for years, then eventually die from lung cancer... didn't slow my step father down one bit.. he still puffs away..
How can you watch your own father suffer and die like that and it not have a strong enough effect to maybe make you cut back to at least 1 pack a day??

Yep... we are SHOCKED that my dad still puffs away after watching his sister die of cancer... you would think that would be the straw that broke the camels back, but yet, he's still smoking.

It is an extremely difficult habit to break - it's compared to coming off heroin. You have to really really want to quit to and it's still really hard.
I quit a few years ago and I still miss it - I loved how it feels, how it tastes, etc. The only thing that stops me from smoking now is that I know I would have to quit again and I never want to go through quitting again.

What surprises me even more, is people who START to smoke these days.
One of my friends from HS starting smoking just a few years ago. I think that has got to be the stupidest thing.
If your not already addicted, why become addicted?

As a smoker who has recently quit, I can't explain it. Yes, every smoker knows the risks, but unless you have been a smoker, you will never fully understand it. I don't know what it, but its the hardest thing I've ever done. Sadly reading this post I want a cig, but again I won't for other reasons. I'm sure its easy on the other side saying "with all the risks and press, how anybody would still do it", but again, unless you're a smoker, you won't get it.

Actually NO. I mean I know there are HORRIBLE issues and diseases assoc. with smoking, BUT if you have never smoked it is a extremly hard habbit to quit. I just quit Sunday and I have to tell you I would give my left boob for a cigarette. I am constantly grabbing for them, I actaully started crying last night because I wanted one so bad. I think unless you have walked in those shoes you just dont know. JMO.

it's not easy at all...
It's also not easy caring about someone so much and watching them kill themselves, so unless you've been on that side of the equation I wouldn't assume you know it either.
My mother was a smoker.. for a long time she woudl hide it from me. Then about 2 years ago she ended up in the hospital with pnemonia.. turned out she had the early stages of emphasema. She was 51. This is a woman who's beat breast cancer twice and was now dealing with the early stagtes of emphasema. She quit the day she got that diagnosis. She used Chantax, and although it wasn't "easy", she did it. If it's a matter of life and dealth, I can't see the question in what to do....
btw - i'm not talking to YOU.. just ingeneral..

YES. I don't understand it and never will. There is not ONE good thing that comes from smoking. Then again, i've never had a cigarette so I don't know what the addiction is like.

I agree with you that I don't know.. thankfully I never got hooked, so I never had to go through the withdrawl of breaking the habit.

Re: Does it surprise you....
I don't understand it either but I can't get DH to quit. I quit years ago and I am glad that I did - I haven't had a cigarette in about three years! I TRIED to smoke one on my honeymoon and couldn't even smoke it!
As for my DH, this is going to sound really dumb but when I tell him it is going to kill him he responds with "Tell me one good thing about being old - show me one happy SANE old person." He really has no desire to be old, he doesn't care about his health and he just CAN'T think of the future. Even when I bring up kids he will turn it into a joke and say that it is another reason never to have them.

That's what I don't get. I understand how hard it is to quit, and that many older people didn't know how bad it was when they started, and then some younger people started when they were in jr high, and didn't know any better, but I have many friends that started in college.
They claimed it was b/c all their friends/roommates were smokers, but mine were too (and 2 boyfriends) and I never started.

I couldn't agree more. You never know what it's like to be addicted to smoking until you are a smoker. Am I surprised that I'm still smoking after all these years? Of course I am..
Did I think I would still be smoking 2 weeks before my 30th birthday? Not in a million years. Smoking for many of us is like drinking your coffee in the morning or eating breakfast. It's something you've done for so long you don't know how to do without it. It's not as easy as you think it is to quit.. trust me!
Jenn, congrats on quitting! I hope you can make it!

Re: Does it surprise you....
I'm a drug abuse researcher, and I can say it doesn't surprise me at all.
When do most people begin? when they are reckless teens and think they're invincible. Once that first puff has been inhaled, the brain changes are HUGE. A very strong chemical dependence develops and it's super difficult to break the habit. After you quit, those brain changes REMAIN. It never reverts. You remain highly suceptible for relapse.
I am confused when healthy adults pick-up smoking. I will add, though, that another large population of smokers are those that suffer from certain types of mental illness... the nicotine actually is a form of self-medication (ex. schizophrenics). It makes them feel more 'normal'. Frankly, their medications are so strong / toxic, to me it's debatable whether smoking is worse for them than their cocktail of perscriptions. I'm still impressed so many people can quit and not relapse.... the urge in the brain must be enormous....

Re: Does it surprise you....
I had my last cigarette October 8, 2007. DH quit 2 weeks later.
I can't explain it, everytime I tried in the past I'd make it a few days and then go back. My doctor finally put me on meds to quit and it worked.
Looking back on it I can't believe why I ever started, both my parents and grandparents smoked and I used to think how gross it was. Now when I leave my moms house I can't wait to get home and change to get rid of the smell.
ETA:I know how hard it is to quit, but the meds really helped. I don't even miss it anymore. CONGRATS to all who have quit!!!!!
