Granted, while cheating on a significant other, being judgmental of how others dress/live their lives etc, or being selfish isn't going to directly shorten your life or the ones around you, its unhealthy and yet people do it every single day. This surprises me just as much...

Unhealthy in a totally different way, IMO. If you are judgemental or selfish or even cheat on someone, you can change over time. The person you cheated on can forgive you.

But, there is no way to take back the damage done to your lungs, etc by smoking.

You are absolutely correct, i noted just one of the differences and I can acknowledge that smoking is infinitely "worse" than many many things. People who are smokers can change to be non smokers just like a cheater would become monogamous. However, the resulting effects from the actions for either scenario can last well beyond the seven years or whatever.

Actually NO. I mean I know there are HORRIBLE issues and diseases assoc. with smoking, BUT if you have never smoked it is a extremly hard habbit to quit. I just quit Sunday and I have to tell you I would give my left boob for a cigarette. I am constantly grabbing for them, I actaully started crying last night because I wanted one so bad. I think unless you have walked in those shoes you just dont know. JMO.

No cigs for you missy!!!

Keep up the good workChat Icon

I used to smoke and my DH still does. I haven't had a cigarette in over 5 years (go meChat Icon Chat Icon )
My DH's mother died from lung cancer in August and I thought it would be enough to make him quit, it wasnt.
Chat Icon Both he and his sister's all smoke. He knows he needs to quit but I fear he never will. My Dad quit cold turkey after smoking for almost 40 years when he was told he had the beginning stages of emphysema. I keep telling DH if my Dad did it so can you!!

Yes- totally different way.
Being judgemental, selfish or unfaithful is EMOTIONALLY unhealthy- smoking is PHYSICALLY unhealthy... IMO there is a big difference...

Re: Does it surprise you....

it does and it doesn't, I don't know why kids start smoking in high school- but it happens, and I was one of them that started in H.S.!!! I smoked for over 10 years and quit more or less cold turkey. For the past few years I've been pleading w/ my hubby to quit- he's the Marlboro man himself! lol I'm at the point where I'm going to say to him that we're not having kids until he quits smoking!!! is that horrible of me?? I've never been an "ultimatum" type of person, but its something I feel strongly about at this point even being an ex-smoker myself.

Re: Does it surprise you....

No, because we're all susceptible to giving into temptation.

I equate smoking to drinking, not eating healthy (ie. fast food), not exercising... insert something bad for you here.

Doing ALL these things are not healthy for us and could potentially cause serious health problems/risks, but for one reason or another we do it.

I smoked. I first tried it when I was 15 and then again when I was 17 b/c "everyone else" was and continued to smoke for the next 12 years (give or take).

Once you start, it's SO hard to quit. My last cigarette was 9/11/07 and believe me there are times I would KILL for a butt, but I resist.

Re: Does it surprise you....

My last cig was February 1992. (I'm older than most of you girls.) What made it "easy" for me to quit was that I was in such a bad place in my life that I wanted to change my whole life, spiritually and physically, and quitting cigarettes kind of naturally went out the door with a lot of other negativity in my life.

That said, I can't imagine NOT having been in a bad place, but just living every day life and then having to decide to quit smoking. It would have been extremely hard, and I understand how hard it really is for people who still smoke.

Re: Does it surprise you....

I've seen some literature that equates nicotine addition with heroin addiction.

I quit about 6 months ago after smoking for 25 years. I used Wellbutrin so I didn't have any physical withdrawal symptoms, but there are still days when I'll catch a whiff of one and get a really strong craving.

Wondering how people can still smoke knowing it's bad? I don't wonder. I know why they do, it's the same reason that I did. I knew the risks, but loved the taste of them. They were a major, pleasurable part of my life. Just like I knew the risks of heart disease and diabetes when I was 100lbs overweight. I still ate crap food.
