Re: Does it surprise you....
I won't say it surprises me, but yes it disappoints me. I've never been a smoker but I grew up in a house with smokers and married a smoker. I understand the addiction is a disease, and it's something I have no real understanding of. I hate to breath in second-hand smoke, but I know no one can successfully quit until they themselves are ready. They can't do it for anyone else, in the meantime I try to be supportive about breaking the habit without being overbearing.

I can totally relate, this is such a hard balance to maintain!
When those graphic anti smoking commercials started I would always point them out to DH and he would get annoyed but now he points them out to ME and they dont affect him anymore.

It surprises me for alot of people. Three of my cousins smoke, and I am so shocked that they started AFTER my grandmother's years and years of fighting emphysema (and losing the battle). We all used to beg her to stop (my one cousin even used to hide her cigarettes) and now they are smokers!

Isn't that unbelievable?? Some people think they are invincible and it won't happen to them. It's sad.

This is what really amazes me. How many people actually start smoking after being educated on how unhealthy and deadly it is. And seeing 1st hand with family members that have died from it.
THAT I will never understand.

I can understand how it might be hard to quit as it is an addictive drug. I have never smoked ever, so I don't totally understand why people even start these days, but I can understand the addiction aspect.
What I don't understand is people who go tanning..

Re: Does it surprise you....
My father quit cold turkey once for about 3 years. Found out he had prostate cancer and what did he do...STARTED SMOKING AGAIN!!! Says all the time how he and his chain smoking girlfriend are going to quit and never does.
The best part is now my brother has picked up the habit and smokes just as much.
I work with senior citizens and I see every day how awful the repercussions from smoking are and all I think is that's my father's future.

Re: Does it surprise you....
I'm a smoker and have a tremendous amount of guilt surrounding it. So please be patient with those smokers that you know as I am sure that at least some of them feel the same way.
There are many things in life that people do knowing only wrong will come of it. Granted, while cheating on a significant other, being judgmental of how others dress/live their lives etc, or being selfish isn't going to directly shorten your life or the ones around you, its unhealthy and yet people do it every single day. This surprises me just as much...

Re: Does it surprise you....
it doesn't surprise me..
I smoked from the age of 16 - 23 yrs. of age. I quit cold turkey. I picked it up again at the age of 30 and quit this past November. It was a VERY stupid decision on my part to start again. I don't think about it any longer, have an urges and I seriously do not see myself doing that ever again. I quit cold turkey, no meds, no gum and no patches.. i feel great.

Re: Does it surprise you....
yes it does.
it is one that that completely disgusts me because it AFFECTS me. i have to smell it, breathe it in and get it on my clothes. i have to see hundreds of disgusting cigarette butts on the ground because people can't freaking get rid of them where they belong. it infuriates me. i grew up in a house where my father smoked and i will never understand why anyone smokes.
i watched my wonderful grandfather die of lung cancer and emphysema even though he quit over 20 years ago. the damage had been done and it still infuriates me that this otherwise healthy man is gone because of a freaking cigarette.
there are many things in life that are hard. there are many things in life that are addicting. i give a lot of credit to people who quit--to those who choose not to, i will never understand.

It is an extremely difficult habit to break - it's compared to coming off heroin. You have to really really want to quit to and it's still really hard.
I quit a few years ago and I still miss it - I loved how it feels, how it tastes, etc. The only thing that stops me from smoking now is that I know I would have to quit again and I never want to go through quitting again.
same here !!

I could've written this word for word! I LOVED smoking! It sounds crazy b/c it's so bad, but you can only understand it if you've been a smoker.
I truly think that unfortunately, at a certain point, it's easier just to continue to smoke than to quit. It was the hardest thing I've ever done.

Unhealthy in a totally different way, IMO. If you are judgemental or selfish or even cheat on someone, you can change over time. The person you cheated on can forgive you.
But, there is no way to take back the damage done to your lungs, etc by smoking.

Actually, my mother was a smoker for 30 years, and in the end needed a double lung transplant, but after according to the Dr.s we spoke with, after a "normal" person without medical complications from the smoking, stops smoking, in aprox. 7 years, you can alomost not even tell they were a smoker if you were to bioposy their lungs. So I believe it takes a long time, but you can un-do the damage done in certain cases. But this is just what I remember I could be wrong.

for the same reason they become addicts for other things... coke, pot, extacy.... starts with peer pressure or needing a fix becuase you're in a depression, and morphs into a problem with its own life.
better question is why do SO many teens sniff solvents? There are over 2 MILLON solvent abusers in the US... Forget smoking, sniffing solvents is so dangerous that it's not uncommon for a kid to die trying it for the first time.
It shows the mentality of kids.. they really do not grasp their own mortality... so of course they'll sneak a cigarette... it has immediate social gratification, and won't hurt THEM... just other people, right?

I totally and completey agree! I quit years ago, but I actually just saw this today and thought this could be a good option! I'm intelligent and level-headed, but nicotine is powerful!
smokeless, non-flammable cigarettes
I want a cigarette now!

Wow i'm so sorry your Mom had to go through that. I've actually read something similar to what you said, but the saddest part is that it usually takes something to "happen" for someone to quit. So, then it's too late to undo that damage.

Re: Does it surprise you....
i was a heavy smoker in college and i won't lie when i go out socially if someone is smoking i'll have more than my share because i love it despite how guilty i feel after every puff. i consider myself a social smoker only which is really no different. i work in a hospital with patients suffering from smoking every day and i just can't get passed the desire to have one. my friend quit three years ago and every day she wants a cigarette. my grandmother quit 5 years before she passed away in her sleep but everyday after she quit she carried a fake cigarette in her hand because she just couldn't get passed it. it is an extremely hard habit to break. gross and bad for you yes. believe me..every smoker knows that.

I bring this up because this morning as I was walking to work from Penn, I was basically trapped in a smoke box. Everywhere I moved to the person infront of me was puffing away and blowing smoke back into my face.
Quoting only this paragraph cause this bothers me TO NO END every day of my life!!!! I work in midtown and walk several blocks from my bus to my work near Grand Central. Some days I wonder why I even showered cause I smell like cigarettes even though I am not a smoker. Especially my hair.
It's a wonder people still smoke....its a pretty strong addiction. DH smokes but no where near me and not right after hes finished either. He has heard tons of horror stories but it does not make him stop. I had a very good friend of mine break down and cry in front of him because her father died of lung cancer. He still smokes. She was saying how she would give anything to have him back, she used to hide his cigarettes when she was little, etc. It was heartbreaking but even these heartbreaking stories does not work to help people to stop. I don't get it.

Re: Does it surprise you....
Yes. It has to be a very powerful addiction.
Someone in my office successfully battled throat cancer last year. I found out yesterday that she still smokes.
DH stopped about 6 years ago. He still thinks about having one. Certain situations (being on a beach, sitting in a restaurant with coffee) makes him think about it & want one. He used to joke that he never knew his car could start without a cigarette. I can only imagine the stress it would cause on our marriage if he were to go back.

What surprises me even more, is people who START to smoke these days.
Surprises me too!!
Me too, especially young teenagers. I can't imagine how hard quitting is and I wish my Dad would quit He has tried so many times but just can't.
It also amazes me how many people smoke in other countries. In Europe, smoking is very common still.
