Both my parents and IL's have a set. We also have theirs. It comes in handy when DCs are involved. Everyone is respectful of boundires so no one just shows up in my kitchen or anything.

I was adamant that my IL's not have a key to our home. I find them at times to be overbearing and smothering. We lived in an apt in their home for almost 4 yrs and although they were pretty good w/leaving us alone, I needed a serious break from them. We only moved a few blocks away so I was sure they were going to be stalking us. Well, barring 1 or 2 instances, they were fine. We had gotten a puppy and my FIL was gracious enough to offer to let the pup out during the day while we were away. I pulled the stick out of my hiney and realized it was the best idea. They honestly surprised me and have never, to my knowledge, over stepped any boundaries w/having a key. We recently gave my dad a key b/c when he comes to NY for business, he stays w/us.

My mom has never asked and she doesnt have a key to my house.
My ILS have a key to our house. MIL watches DS and sometimes need to let herself in our house in the morning.

When we lived in NYC no one else had the key to our apartment and my parents (who live on LI) never asked.
Now that we own a house on LI my parents (dad) has a key. He didn't ask for it though, we thought it best for him/them to have one.
It's a good thing we did bc DH locked himself out one day while with DS and I was out. My dad had to come over to open the door for them.

we gave my in-laws a key when we moved here, and reason being is we had a cat who needed to be fed and the litter changed when we went on vacation.

Ditto. It was especially helpful after ds was born. I couldn'talways get to the door. I wouldn't feel comfortable if that didn't have a set.

Nope. Mine don't live close by, so there's no reason for it. A couple we're good friends with who lives close by has an emergency key.

My mom yes, but we already had a set made for her as well as my father and my brother. We were pg at the time so we needed them to have access to the house because somebody needed to get Gus when I went into labor.

We gave both my mom and MIL have a set - for emergencies or when we are away to feed the cat.

My brother has the key to our house because he takes care of my bird when we go away or lets my dog out if I am going to be gone for a long time one day. I recently gave one to a really good friend of mine too who also has been helping with the dog.

they didn't ask but the in laws have a key so they can feed our cats when we are away. They know not to come in w/o permission.
My parents live across the country but they get a key when they are in town.
