Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
They didn't ask for one, we offered one. It has come in handy if they need to check on our house if we are away, or if they need to use the facilities in an emergency. I would trust them with my house entirely. We also have copies of their house keys.

Nope. Nor do I plan on giving a key to either of our parents.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
My parents have a set but they live in FL so it's for when they come and stay with us so I don't have to worry about them getting in and out of the house
MIL has one but she watches DS. She doesn't show up unannounced cause she knows I'd kill her.....lol

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
They never asked and never had a key until recently. I decided to give my dad a key because there were times I was out and he came to my house to get the kids off the bus and I didn't want them waiting outside. So he has a key to get in and wait until we get home.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
They didn't ask, but I gave one to:
My dad My mom and step-dad ILs
They all got keys when we first moved in b/c they were all helping out with things at different times (reno, painting, cleaning), and we may not have been home all the time.
They know not to use it unless we are expecting them. Well, my dad does show up unannounced (brings goodies from Iavarone, grandmas leftovers), but I kind of like that.

In laws have a set. We offered.
My would have a set except she lives in CT and there is no reason. But I would give it to her without asking.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
DH's mom lives in Florida but if she lived here we would have probably given her a key.
We did give my Dad and my Sister a key. They never use it without me telling them to use it. When we go on vacation my sister will come and take care of our cats and my dad will come and pick up my dog the day we are leaving and bring him back home the day we are coming home.
My dad also has a key to both of our vehicles just in case of an emergency.
But to answer the original question...No, they did not ask for the key. We just gave it to them.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
My parents have a set, but we just gave it to them without their asking. They live close by so they have it for emergencies & whatnot. It's come in handy a few times now. The good thing is that they never use it if we're home - they know that it's just for if we're out & there's an actual need to use it.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
No, they never asked.
My parents have a key - it's for emergencies and they pick up DD so we thought it'd be a good idea. They never show up unannounced though. I would NEVER give my MIL a key because she would just show up and she's very nosy and will rifle through things.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
ILs asked for a set of keys. DH gave them a set, but he lost his keys and took them off his parents. We haven't given them another spare set- just keep forgetting to.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
They didn't ask for it but I gave them one.
My parents are a huge source of help for me. Picking up the kids when we're working late, dropping off Costco deliveries, waiting for workmen.
I didn't think twice about it. They don't overstep their boundaries.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
my mom has a set of our keys bc she is the closest to us. She never asked we just gave it to her when we moved in. She never used them (we went away for 2 weeks and she refused to use them to water our plants!) but she did use them so she could check our mail (we live in an apt building). She also used them once bc i thought i left my straightener on when we first moved in.
i personally think its smart to have a nearby relative or friend have a set of keys just in case of emergency - as long as that person doesnt take advantage of it.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
Never.
Until very recently my step mother wasn't allowed in my home (be it college dorm room, apt or home). Its a 'thing' you could say.
I would never live 'down the street' from my dad. Personally I feel that's foolish and weak. But that's me and our family lifestyle. We always move out of our family home and into our own lives independently. That means no key to my house.
I've always been rather independent. No one has ever had a spare of my house key. No one has a spare key to my car either. Only now that I'm married do we have shared keys. Hubby did have his brother have a key to our car for awhile. I thought it was odd. My neighbors don't have a key either.
If an emergency happens, I'll find a way. I plan to keep a spare in the yard. For now he has a set and I have a set. That's enough.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
My in-laws would never ask for one. My mother wants one in case of emergencies but they live over an hour away so I think its ridiculous. Haven't given her one.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
My parents lived with me, so yes, they had keys. My dad no longer lives with me but he still has keys. My sister also has a set, and I have a set to her house. Dad comes by periodically, he keeps his car in my garage and stuff in my attic. His mail also comes to my address.
FIL does not have keys to my co-op, nor would he ever need them.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
Parents have never asked for one - because I give it to them anyway.
My mom and my sister both have keys to our apartment. DH works almost an hour away from home so if god forbid I lock myself out, I can call my mom to come with the key. (Which this has totally happened before!)
My sister travels a lot and sometimes needs to bring her cat by so we can watch him. So I just gave her a key to make pick-up/drop-of easier.
When we get our house I fully intend on making sure that my mom, sister, and brother have keys.

Re: Did your parents ask for a key to your Home/Apt?
no one asked. but we gave my inlaws a set, since they live closer. also, it was useful when we had construction people come during the day when we were at work, they could go by.
