DD is coughing/choking while drinking bottle?
Since I brought her home she has been coughing and kind of choking during her feedings, not all the time but enough to make me bring her to the Dr. Has this happened to anyone else and if so what was the diagnosis? DD is now 3 1/2 weeks old
For those of you that don't already know my 1yr old DD had heart surgery due to a heart defect that caused her to have feeding problems, so you can imagine the stress I am feeling right now. The fear of going through this again is over taking me.

Are you bottle feeding? If so, is the nipple the right size? It should probably be size 1. If it's bigger than that, the flow may be too fast.

Re: DD is coughing/choking while drinking bottle?
I posted about this a few weeks ago. It does happen to DD at times (now she is 10 wks.) The doctor feels that she may have "silent reflux". She doesn't want to change her formula because she is thriving (weight wise) and still loves to eat. She is actually having me cut a Tums tablet in quarters, dissolve 1 piece and add it to her bottle. It has been working so far. She may need to go on Zantac. Very common though, don't stress, just speak to your dr.

I am hoping this is what it is the dr seems to think this may be the problem but with her sisters history they are sending us tomorrow for a swallow test

DS choked a lot on his bottles when he was younger. He had reflux..Once we got that under control, he was ok...Hope you find your answer soon...

Preemie nipples are usually a FASTER flow than a level 1 nipple. They are made that way b/c companies assume that preemies don't have the fat pads in their cheeks like full term babies have and that's what creates the good suction. Preemies also usually have a weaker latch into the nipple so they make those nipples softer (usually with both an X and a pin hole opening) so that with less work they get more milk.
Which bottle/nipple are you using? All of the brands have different flow rates, it could be as easy as switching the brand.

Re: DD is coughing/choking while drinking bottle?
ollie has both of these issues...he coughs occasionally when feeding which i am told is from reflux....he also occasionally chokes but it's gotten much less frequent which is from incoordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing which they grow out of with time..using a slow flow nipple definitely helps...hth good luck

Re: DD is coughing/choking while drinking bottle?
I just posted the same thing yesterday. DD has terrible reflux and chokes/coughs while drinking and even while not drinking, its like she gasps for air. Very scary but it definitely has gotten better since she's on meds
