I was told the same thing, but I didn't listen. Well, good thing I didn't, he fit in newborn clothes for a good 3-4 Weeks. He was 7lbs 11oz and 21 inches long when born. I was also told to only buy a small bag of newborn diapers, and I wound up having to go out and get a big box of them.
Don't go crazy with outfits though. I had about 6 pairs on newborn P.J.s and onsies. I had three outfits and he hardly wore any of them.

My DS that was born at 8lb 8oz wore newborn for MAYBE a week.

All my other DC (they were less than 7 1/2 lbs) wore newborn sizes for almost the first month.

DD was born at 6 lbs 8 oz and 19'' long...she wore NB for the first 3 wks or so. Then was in 0-3 for about 6 wks and by 9 wks old she was about 11.5 lbs and wearing 3 month clothing. That being said she still fits in some 3 month stuff and some 6 month stuff at 3 months old. It really depends ont he brand, don't overdo it...wait to see your babies body type.
