Confused with newborn sizes
What do I need to have to prepare me for the first week or so? I'm team green so I don't want to buy too much before the baby comes, but I do want to have a good weeks worth or clothing and pjs that are going to fit if my hubby doesn't make it to the store right away. Will newborn fit bc some people are telling me only premies fit in newborn and they went straight to 0-3 months.

definitely not true! DS was 7 lbs 10 oz. and he was in NB sizes for several weeks. they usually go from 5-8 lbs but depending on how your baby is "built" - meaning chubby and short, or long and thin, or anywhere in-between - your DC can fit into NB sizes for a while.
what i did was buy a few things from carters in 0-3 sizes because even if they were too big, that was better than too small! and then when DS was born and we saw that he needed NB sizes we went and bought a few of those too.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
I'd skip the newborn size and go straight to 0-3 months.
DS was a small baby at 6 pounds and the 0-3 was slightly big on him but he grew into them within a few weeks. I personally found it easier to dress him when the clothes were slightly big because he wiggled around so much.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
I had twins born at 35.5 weeks, They were 5.14 and 6.3 and both 19 inches long. They wore preemie for a week or two then newborn for a week or two then they were in 0-3. I would say get some newborn and some 0-3. get the gowns-those are the easiest in the beginning since you change their diaper every time you feed them. A LOT!

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
DD was 7lbs. 12 oz. and wore NB clothes for 6 weeks. I actually had to buy extra b/c I don't have a w/d in my apt. and didn't have enough!
0-3 was giant on her!
I would definitely get a couple of 5 packs of Carter's NB onesies and 2-3 footed sleepers (more if your DC will be a winter baby.)

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
My babies were born 4lbs 15 oz and 5lb 1 oz. They wore preemie size for the first two weeks or so, and then newborn for the first 2-3 months. They wore 0-3 until they were 6 months old. Now they are wearing 3-6 and are 7.5 months old.

I completely disagree. My DS was 6lbs as well and he wore NB until he was 3 months old!
Plus, especially with sleepers, you don't want them to be too big, that becomes a SIDS risk!

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
My DS was 8lbs., 8oz & he wore NB for at least the first 3 weeks (& the onesies longer than that).
BUT that being said, DO NOT go crazy buying clothes, believe me you will get more clothes than you know what to do with. You'll end up w/ clothes you didn't even have a chance to take the labels off of.
Get a couple long-sleeved sleepers & a few onesies & you'll be fine.
DS is 3 months now & in 3-6 month clothes (he's in 90th% height/weight)

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
My DD was in Newborn clothes until she was close to 4 months. She was 6lbs9oz and 18.5" at birth. She will be 10 months on Wednesday and wears mainly 6-9 months, but still fits in most of her 3 month onesies. It really depends on the brand. I would get a some of preemie, newborn and 0-3. Gerber sells those packs of like 5 or 6. Open them only as you need them and return what you don't use. Target carries them and has a great return policy. I would try there. Good luck!

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
one thing you will find is with different brands - they fit at different times - even though they are the same size.
in regular carters - emma is still in newborn in carters - 'just one year' i think it's called - she's in 0-3 in children's place - she's in 0-3 months in faded glory (i think kohls) - she's in 0-3 months in gerber - she's in 0-3 months
when she was born - she was in newborn and fit some things in preemie...even though she was 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
I would get a couple of outfits in NB, but I'd guess that most typical sized babies don't fit into NB for very long. It only goes up to 8 pounds in Carters. My DS only fit into NB clothes for about a week and a half. He's now in 0-3/3 month clothes in most brands, except he is fitting into 3-6 month in Gerber. He's only 7 weeks old!

If you are having DC soon, you might just want to get some 0-3 white oneies and socks. Its so hot out now, and you probably won't be out making the rounds showing off dc yet. jmo

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
DS is 4 weeks old and still wearing newborn...he weighed 7 pounds at birth and has definitely gained but is still in Newborn... I had no Newborn stuff when he was born and had to run and buy some because the 0-3 months were all HUGE on him.
So, definitely have some Newborn sizes on hand.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
Hard to tell since I went full term and my dd was small and fit into preemie for a wk or two. Even though she wasnt preemie. She was under 6 lbs.
I know GAP sells the 7lbs and under outfits....that might be good to have on hand as well as NB.

I agree with Kate, DD was 6lbs 10 oz and 21 inches at birth and was in NB for a good 3 weeks probably more, the only reason she grew out of newborn was that she was ultra long....

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
Honestly it really depends on the baby. DD#1 was 9lbs 4oz and 20 inches. She never wore newborn clothing. I had 1 or 2 outfits but she didn't fit into them; however, her 0-3 was pretty big on her.
DD#2 was 9lbs 5ozs and 20 inches and guess what 0-3 was HUGE on her and I had to have my mom run out and get some newborn outfits to keep her in for about 3 weeks.
I would have some newborn clothing on hand and 0-3 but I wouldn't wash more than 1 or 2 outfits in case you never use them and want to return them.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
We were also team green. We got tons of gifts of clothing so we had plenty. But DS was 7lbs at birth and he was in newborn size until about 6 weeks. Now he is 9 weeks and about 10lbs4oz and he is wearing either 0-3 or 3 months depending on the brand and style.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
I was Team Green too. Most of my newborn stuff was gender neutral. I had a bunch of footed sleeper/play outfits. Although newborn size is up to 8 lbs, that's just an estimate. DS was 8 lbs 1 oz at birth and wore newborn clothes for at least the first month. He was on the shorter side, which is probably why he was able to wear those outfits for so long. He was swimming in the 0-3 month clothes at the beginning.

Re: Confused with newborn sizes
I was told the same thing to skip the newborn sizes and go straight to 0-3. We had a ton of 0-3 but got a few additional items from my shower. Well DS was 6lbs 14oz and the 0-3 was huge on him. Thank goodness for grandparents, they bought more than a dozen of clothes, half in newborn, for DS to wear. He was in the newborn for about a month to six weeks.

Same here! And I actually bought some preemie clothes because NB was so HUGE on Ann in the beginning.
She's 6 weeks tomorrow and was 8lbs 3oz (21 inches) at her appt yesterday and still in NB (some things are not fitting as well but there's not a single 0-3 month thing I have that I could put her in that isn't pretty big).
