Clothing Size vs Age

I know every baby is different, but at about what age should a baby be wearing 6month clothes? I'm starting to buy clothes for my lil one on the way. Im due in July and I know they usually wear 3m in the beginning.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

My DD went against everything I was told. She was born in June and wore newborn until end of August. She was born at 6lbs 10oz and didn't reach 8 lbs until she was about 2 months I believe. So many people bought me summer outfits in size 0-3 and 3-6 and while she did get some use out of the 0-3, the 3-6 never was worn. Some of it I was able to exchange for credit but other stuff is still hanging in her closet with tags. We went on vacation recently so I was happy to be able to put her in some of the clothes, but most it is just a waste. My advice, buy as little as possible and try to buy things you can return easily if need be. Keep all of your receipts and only wash a few things to get by the first few days. You never know what size your baby will leave the hospital wearing. I brought a coming home outfit in size NB and 0-3 and the newborn outfit she came home in was so big on her.

Maybe you can give your mom or someone else close to you some things to hang on to and tell them to wait until the baby is born and then give the go ahead to have them wash those things so that when you get home they will be ready for you.

I can tell you that my DD is 9 months now, weighs 17lbs (30th percentile) and can still fit into a lot of 3-6 month stuff (most of the labels go up to 17lbs in this size). I'm so stumped on what to get her for the summer bc I have no idea if she will hit a growth spurt from all of the table food she eats or if she will slow down her weight gain bc she is starting to become more mobile.

ETA - Good Luck to you Chat Icon

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

Both of my girls have run pretty darn true to size. So if the outfit said 6 months (assuming that most times that means 3-6 months) they wore them between that time...sometimes a few weeks longer too. My girls are almost 5 & almost 2 now and they've been that way all along (my oldest I did use to size-up in shirts once she hit toddler sizes because of her pot belly Chat Icon )

I had my DD last July and she was in newborn size for about 2-3 weeks and then she bulked up really fast lol. She's currently 8 months and wears size 12 months or 18-24 months depending on the brand. Don't buy too much just yet. Just get a few things that you'll need for when your baby is born and then you'll see how he'll gain weight.

I would not buy clothes too far in advance. My situation is probably rare but my DD, who is now 5 and wearing 7, wore 18 months when she was 6 months. I'm not kidding. Chat Icon I gave away so many lovely things she never wore or wore once because she grew so fast.

DD#1 was always whatever age she was thats what size she was. She is 5 now and recently went up to 6. Thats a first for her.
DD#2 has always been a size behind which is not the "norm" but she was also born at only 5 pounds 1 oz. Shes a peanut.

My DS is 12.5 weeks and he is in his 3-6 mon clothes. Anything that has a 3 mon tag is too small so it's either 3-6 or 6 mon ones now

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

I wouldn't buy clothes far in advance. Every baby is different. DS was technically over the weight limit for certain sizes as a newborn/infant, but he was on the shorter side and could still fit into the clothes. He was 8 lbs 1 oz at birth and wore newborn clothes for 5 weeks. It took several months for him to outgrow each infant size. Now, at over 3 years old, he still fits comfortably into 2T.

DD was born July 17th and got soooooo many summer clothes 0-3 months but wore Newborn up until September. Thank goodness the weather stayed warm that she got some wear out of the 0-3 months clothing but it's so hard to tell sizing. DD is 8 months and is still in some 3-6 month clothing depending upon the brand. She's a peanut!

Yea, it's hard to predict. My DS gained weight quickly and was long by 3 months so he was wearing 6 months by then.

At 4 months he was wearing 9M size. But he was chunky. Almost 19lbs by then.

He's now 9 months and is still in 12 months (been wearing it for the past 3 months or so as the growing has slowed up)

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

Definitely hard to predict! DS has always been a big boy and way ahead of the age sizes. At 3 1/2 he's pretty much out of 4T/5T and into the "big boy" clothes!! DD started small and on track but all of a sudden at 6 1/2 months she is wearing mostly 12 month and some 18 month clothes! Although there are some 6-9 month stuff that still fits ok. It's so hard to figure out kids clothing sizes! I'm just thankful for lots of hand-me-downs Chat Icon

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

My kids were always ahead of the curve. Wearing 6 months at age 2-3 months, etc. DS has been wearing 4T since age 3 and 3 months, and DD has been in 3T shirts since before her 2nd birthday (she's still in 2T pants).

Don't buy too much ahead of time, plus you'll get gifts, so don't waste your money!

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

The other thing is they might be in two different sizes for pants and tops. My DS is 10 months old and has really short legs so he can still wear 6-9 month pants, but we're moving him into 9-12 month for tops and onesies. For the first few months he was right on target with the clothing sizes. But his growth really slowed at around 6 months so it's just hard to tell what you'll need.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

both my kids were off completely.. DD was the worst.. but now at 2.5 she is more or less true to size.

she was 6.7 born.. by month 2 she was wearing 6 month clothing...

my DD was FAT.. there is no other way to describe her.. she was beastly.. by 6 months she was in 12 month clothing... at about 9-10 months she started slowing down and by a year she was wearing 18-24 months..

now like i said at 2.5 she wears 24/2T & 3T clothes (she is tall and thin)

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

It been so hard to judge my ds. As a new born and early on he grew and gained weight really fast. At 6 months he was in 9 months. But now at 2 y/o he is in 18 month bottoms because he is so small now. I have learned to buy from stores that take anything back at any time with no questions. So I will buy what I think he will need but I don't need to stress if he never uses it I just take it back. I just returned a bunch of winter stuff that he never even touched. Just save your receipts. Kohls, carters and Osh Kosh no questions asked. I have even returned holiday stuff after a holiday with no questions.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

my DS is 10 weeks and already starting to fit into 6 month clothes!! he is off the charts for his height, so most babies will be smaller but that's why i'm posting - b/c you never know!! so just in case, it's a good idea to hold off on buying a lot of clothes. i made the mistake of buying a TON of 3m and half of them don't fit anymore after he wore them once. some stuff i never even got to put on him!

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

I would not buy ahead. There is no way to know what size your child will be. My DD#1 was 9lbs 4 ozs and wore size 3 when she was born. She was 20lbs even at 12 months and barely fit into size 12 months at that time. But for the most part her 1st year she was true to size. 0-3 for birth through 3 months etc. But when people heard she was 9lbs at birth EVERY single person (including the stores) told me to buy 18 months for summer. Nope she could barely wear 12 months and I had a lot of 18 months that she got only a little wear out of when she turned 2. DD#1 is only 20% for height now.

DD#2 on the other hand was 9lbs 5 ozs and she wore newborn for 2-3 weeks. She grew much faster than her sister - and while she is mainly true to size - she is around 75-80% for height and is about 6-12 months ahead in height and weight from where her sister was at the same age.

I would say it is a gamble so anything you buy make sure you will be able to return it or be willing to give or donate it to a friend if you can't use it.

DD is 7 months 1 week and fits into most of her 3-6 month tops. Her 3-6 month pants are too short, but her 6-9 (or 6-12) are too wide Chat Icon
