Re: Clothing Size vs Age

There's really no way to tell. Lily was in NB until about 3 months, and then moved onto 3 months....and she's always been the exact size as her age.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

My kids are pretty true to size, but also went through spurts where certain sizes got more wear. DD wore preemie and nb for the 1st 9wks of her life, 0-3 for 3 wks and then 3m for 1wk. 3-6 for 2wks and 6 mon for almost 10wks...her chunky phase Chat Icon The point is she had spurts that she gained a ton and then leveled off. Ds is true to size, but we have to size up because of the cloth. I don't know why you would start with 3months though. If you're having a July baby I say buy some Gerber nb onsies and call it good for awhile unless you have A/C. Plus if you wait you'll get some killer end of the year sales tooChat Icon

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

My DD has been just about true to size but not always. Like others said, don't bother buying too far in advance. You won't know what your child's size is as they get bigger. My DD can easily fit in tops that are her age size, but there have been plenty of times where she is too long for the bottoms. She's 10 mos now and right now I can put 6-9 month onesies/tops on her but have to use 12 months pants.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

I think it completely depends upon the child. My kids are both long and would have to go up a size in length before width. At about 12 months they slowed down. My kids were and still are a size bigger for their shirts than their pants because they need the length for their arms.
I always knew to go up a size when their feet looked tight in the sleepers. That is when they are going through a growth spurt. They may never fill the outfit out in the belly. DS is 4 1/2 and he wears size 5 or 6 in shirts and 5 in pants for the length. I need the adjustable waist ones so I can pull them in. DD is 2 1/2 and is in 3T shirts and 2T pants.

Definitley buy a few NB sized things (unless you are anticipating a big baby). I had NOTHING for him. Everything I had was 0-3 or 3 months. I figured 0-3 would be fine because he was well...0 LOL Wrong! He was 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 0-3 was huge on him. He wore NB clothes for about 6 weeks before he fit into 0-3. My mom ran out and had to buy me some NB things.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

I have to say- you really can't predict
My DD was born at 7 pounds- pretty average size
But she wore newborn clothes until almost 3 months- and she was wearing 6 months until almost a year old!

She is now 21 months and wearing 18 month clothes since the fall.
I don't see her being in 24 months anytime soon either

And then I have friends with babies who were in 6 month size by 3 months!
It really depends on the child and is SOOO hard to predict!

I didn't buy any clothes myself but got a ridiculous amount as gifts. My DD was 8lb 2oz at birth and I only had one NB size, which did fit her perfectly, but I put her in 0-3 up until 4 months. It also depends on the brand of clothing. She's now almost 5 months and the 3-6, or 6 month size are still a little large except for anything by Little Me, which I find is sized smaller, while Carters is very generous. Her Easter dress is 3-6 and will be much too big for her to wear. My DD was a pretty big size at birth but has been gaining slowly so there are many different things to factor in.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

DD was 6 lbs. 15 oz. and 19" at birth. She wore NB for about two weeks and then 0-3 for a bit. I had her in May and she was wearing her short sleeved summery clothes that were this size through about the end of August and then moved up to 3-6 months. She wore this size until she was about 5 months and then moved up to 6-12. She seemed to wear 6-12 for the longest period compared to any other, even to present day (she is now 2T slowly moving to 3T). She will be 2 in May. HTH

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

The only think I could 'safely' buy in advance (aka HUGE CAN NOT PASS UP SALE) are jeans, khakis and short sleeve polos/tshirts .

Only b/c it won't matter what season they grow into them. - They always need jeans and khakis - and you could always put a thermal under a T or polo

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

DS is very true to size. He never fit into NB size but have moved up almost right on target. He will be 1 year on April 7th and moved up to size 12 mo a few weeks ago. The pants are long and some are loose but the onesies and tees fit fine.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

It is hard to predict, my DS was in sizes at least twice his age up until a couple of months ago and now he is 10 months and has been wearing the 12-18 months for awhile and isn't growing out of them. Will depend on their shape a lot too. He is very long, so onesies, footed pajamas, etc. need to be a whole size bigger than Ts or pants.

Re: Clothing Size vs Age

DS is a week old and was 7lbs 3oz at birth. He is in Newborn clothes right now and they fit perfect. His Newborn jammies are still too big on him. My First was 7lbs 11oz and was in Newborn for a while too.
DS #1 started wearing 3-6 or 6 months clothes at around 3 months. It really depends on the brand of clothes as well. Carters, Target, Kohls clothes tend to run smaller then say Gap, Childrens place.
Like others said, don't go buying too much clothes in advance. You just don't know what size they will be.
