The labor force participation rate is 62.8% so that does make it just about 40% - it's not that much of an exaggeration.
I agree that gas prices have nothing to do with the president. I just saw someone posted that they are low and it seemed like the credit was going to Obama for that. So, I just wanted to mention that election years the price always drops. They will eventually skyrocket again.
Our economy is not in a good place and the stats are being misrepresented to give us a false sense of security.
The highest the labor participation rate we've ever had since 1950 was around 67%. You have to take into account that we have more retired people at this point in our history. People are living longer and are not working. It's not as black and white as the number would make it seem..

I don't know one way or the other, but is that number adjusted for people who are retiring? Baby Boomers are still the largest population group in this country, and they're retiring left and right. Both my parents retired this year, my uncle just a couple of years ago. There are a lot of factors, but the graph I'm looking at (the link you shared, but adjusted to 2000 instead of 2006) show that employment has been in decline for all 16 years of this century, but it looks like there's an uptick right now.
Another person in my family lost his job a few years back and never bothered to look for another one  Didn't even put his resume together, because he too is a baby boomer and just assumed he wouldn't find a job. He'll vote for Trump also, while signing his family up for Obamacare and applying for government assistance...

Sure there are probably a ton of reasons for that number, but a lot of people have been laid off that can't find jobs and they are forced into early retirement when their unemployment runs out. I know a lot of retired people that would still work if they could find jobs. They weren't ready to retire but had no choice. The fact remains that the LFPR is the lowest it's been since 1977.
I'm not saying that Obama was a bad president or a good one. I believe they all try to do the best they can with what their given. I'm sure no one wants to intentionally go down in history as being a bad president.
People are always going to use the numbers to prove something (the president was great/the president was horrible) My only point is that the numbers ARE being misrepresented to make our economy seem A LOT better off then it really is.

I agree. You can't consider the unemployment number an indicator of strong economy. Once a person is no longer eligible to collect unemployment they are no longer considered unemployed. In some states it is shorter than 26 weeks. Also how many people are underemployed? There are people who were making 6 figures who are now working at minimum wage jobs just to try to pay the bills. Career opportunities for recent college graduates are limited as well.
