Yes I saw it. This is what it said- She found a bedbug and even took a photo. The PA GWL took the bug from her and then later that day claimed that it wasn't a bedbug and also that they accidentally "lost" it! When the girl posted about the incident on Facebook they threw her out of the hotel. Her small children left BAREFOOT in a snowstorm! They could have at least given them some sweats and flip flops from the gift shop. This was the family's FIFTH yearly trip, so they were good customers. DISGUSTING IMO

Yeah, that's great PR.

Brillant of them.

I am sure, in this day and age of social media, where every little incident blows up in 5 seconds, that this will win them a lot of customers.

exactly- at last I looked, her post had been shared by over 600 people on FB- can you imagine how many people have seen it by now?

And by tossing her out for complaining- which last I looked was a right in this country - free speech anyone?- they look even worse.
The board of health should give them a gander.
I've heard the grossness goes beyond bed bugs.

they actually had the cops escort her out too Chat Icon

So then there is OBVIOUSLY more to the story than what is being told. Cops don't just come and escort you out for complaining. They come when you are acting like a lunatic.

Yeah something is up. There must be more to it for the police to be involved.

I'm going to the one in MA hoping they are cleaner and have a better reputation!

We were here last summer. Seemed really clean and the employees were very polite. Not much in the surrounding area unless you go back down the highway. Absolutely nothing in the town where its located.

I haven't seen the post in my news feed and I wish it would pop up so I can share it. We have family and friends that go all the time and we refuse to go with them. For some reason the place skeeves me out. Traveling and staying in hotels skeeves me out altogether but for some reason this place really skeeves me out.

For anyone who hasn't seen it- Here is the post. You can read the entire saga within the comments.

GWL Story

ETA: After they found out she posted on FB (due to people calling and cancelling reservations and mentioning her name), their tune changed. They "lost" the bug she gave them, and insisted they weren't bed bugs and wouldn't heat treat the room OR their stuff.

she said she had photos but never posted them? I can understand being upset about bed bugs because, yuck. But for the police to have to be called makes me think that there is way more to this story than we are receiving. I saw this on Facebook yesterday so it is absolutely making the rounds.

Re: Anyone see the post about GWL on facebook?

Just bc police were called doesn't mean they HAD to be called. The resort could have been covering their asses and making it more than it was to take the heat off them. And they lost the bug then it wasn't a bedbug after all? I call BS! After they told her they would treat her stuff? I only know of her from the LIF and other boards and she seems totally normal and grounded. Not one for drama etc. ETA- read her post someone posted above and the story is all there. Not irrational at all.

And I don't care what the situation is, a customer finds a bed bug you bed over backwards to rectify it, refund and make them happy because you know damn well this can ruin your rep.

I am soooo picky about hotels. They all skeeve me. I have gotten better recently because it's a necessary evil but every time I look at pics of the rooms here I get very turned off. Its not the type of room I would ever chose to stay in. And when I see the prices sometimes I am floored!

Yeah this story has been shared all over FB. To be honest even before this story erupted, GWL was never anything I had any desire to do in the least. I actually was recently on their site and the whole place just gave me a gross vibe. Something about an indoor water park and hundreds of people in the middle of flu season just bothers me.
But I do know people who love if there

Not my cup of tea, just like Disney isn't for some people. I never see the need to go to GWL

I don't know this woman but there has to be more to the story. From what I read on the facebook thread is that they switched her room, gave her a free night, offered to treat all her clothes. What more were they suppose to do? People get bedbugs. You don't throw out everything you own to get brand new. You treat the clothes and belongings. I definitely do not agree with making them leave in the middle of the night but something must have happened to make that happen and for the cops to make them leave with no shoes....seems odd to me.

I just came from GWL lodge last weekend. I organized a trip of over 25 rooms and not one person had an issue. All had an awesome time. This was my third time to GWL and never had an issue with bugs, cleanliness, etc. I have travelled with big groups there before as well and no one ever had an issue.

I've seen the fb post and I've seen people adding to the original post and the whole thing blowing up. I personally think there is more to the story than we know and there are 2 sides to every story who knows what the truth is. I hope all are ok in the story and anyone else who is going has an awesome time like we did! : )

The Great Wolf Lodge Poconos that she tagged in her post isn't even an active page, there are zero posts on it from GWL and they post from their main corporate page. So I don't get how all these people were seeing her post and then immediately cancelling their reservations in what...an hour or two time span? It seems like GWL was making that part up?

There IS NOT more to the story. I know this woman personally, and they just treated her like sh!t. The cops were called and they were escorted out in summer clothes during a snowstorm when she posted on facebook and tagged them. The manager called the cops.

She did NOT want to stay another night, would you? But the problem began when she didnt feel comfortable taking her things home and why should she? All it takes is ONE bedbug and could you imagine the cost and trouble involved if she brought it home? THOUSANDS of dollars and why should that burden be on her? She asked to be reimbursed for her things and the refused and offered t-shirts from the gift shop, that is when she wrote the FB post and then they called the cops bc of it. Had they just been accommodating, understanding and just reimbursed her for her things so she could go get new clothes, this would be a moot point. Its their poor customer service and their treatment of her that caused this to escalate. Now they are lying through and through about the entire incident.

I'm sure there is so much more to this story than we will know.

I've seen them throwing out entire mattresses in past years, so I'm sure they know how to deal with bedbugs properly.

There are bedbugs everywhere. Even at the nicest hotels in the world. Travelers bring them in. I don't find GWL to be skeevy at all, and wouldn't compare it to a Motel 6 at all, not even in the slightest LOL. We are picky, and go there almost every year for the past 10 years.

Chat Icon

I am super picky about hotels too. I went to GWL thinking I would be skeeved. I skeeve alot of places. But I thought it was pretty nice for the type of place. I thought the pool locker room was gross (b/c it was wet and messy) but other than that, thought the room we had (Grizzly bear suite) was really nice and well kept. I ALWAYS check my room anywhere I go for BedBugs.

I don't know…I personally thinking posting you found bedbugs on Facebook, while away, isn't the best idea. It's very inflammatory. At least wait until you get back, JMO.

I don't think it's typical protocol to expect to have your things replaced. Heat treated, yes, replaced, no.

I wouldn't want to throw out my clothes. Some of my things can't be replaced, they are no longer available, as next season's clothes are already out. Especially bathing suits. I am very attached to certain items of clothing I have because they fit me just so. Plus I don't keep receipts once wear something. So how would they know what I paid for something? I'd surely get screwed in that deal.
I am sure heat treating clothes is sufficient. What do people do when their home is infested? Throw out their entire wardrobe? I doubt it.

Right. So if this woman was demanding more than typical compensation, I would imagine that them not giving that, then her posting it on Facebook was just a bad combination.

Once she posted on FB, GWL decided NOT to heat treat the room as it is "Very expensive" and they say it wasn't a bed bug- although they couldn't prove that either.

100%. I "know" this mom through another moms chat board we are both on. Her story is 100% accurate. The even told her to check her daughters diapers before she put them on her daughter! COME ON!!! GWL can't buy a pack of diapers? The mom wasn't expecting to get $1,000 in replacement clothing. But, she did want to go to the outlets down the road and at least get clothing for the day for her and her children.

Police can be called for any matter at all. Someone doesn't need to be acting like a "lunatic" for the police to respond. They calmly escorted her out at the hotels request. The family left, calmly, in SUMMER CLOTHING during a SNOW STORM! 2 small children! It's not the fact that there was a found bedbug. Is that an issue? Sure! But, it can happen anywhere. The major issue was the way they were treated after it was reported.

DH's aunt wound up with a bed bug infestation. To rid the house of them they had to throw out every single mattress, rip out all the rugs, then tent the house and have it fumigated and heat treated. All linens that were on the beds (sheets, blankets etc) were also thrown in the trash. All clothes were commercially treated after the house was fumigated. The family was in a hotel for 2 weeks.

Exactly my point. They did not throw out their clothes. They were treated.
I would be DEVASTED to lose my clothes .
sheets and matresses you can replace. A bathing suit or pair of jeans that you feel amazing in and they don't make anymore you cannot.

Did you see the pictures of the outfits her kids were sent out in during frigid temps? Thin, pajamas!!! No coats, barely clothes. That is disgusting in itself, bed bugs or no bedbugs. I will never go to this place for a vacation and Im glad her story is making the rounds.
