Spinoff to sales rant

Mssissy's $30 popcorn tubs post got me venting lol

School just started for the youngens and they're already hawking crap for fundraisers. It's been what, 2 weeks now? I've already been hit up for 4 different fundraiser sales from the same school. Between the direct sales people hitting you up for home parties and fat tubes of mascara that make your lashes look like you dipped them in a vat of spider shit or smoothies that make you lose 60 lbs overnight and cure herpes and these kids that are peddling magical wrapping paper and sweaters I wore in the 80s I'm ready to scream. Lol

Re: Spinoff to sales rant

I know.
I don't do it.
I don't sell any of that shit for DD's school.

As it is they FORCE me to buy the stupid Kids Stuff coupon book
I used ONE coupon last year for 40% off at Michaels that I could have found online anyway.

I never go to any of the places in that book and if I do I surely forget the book anyway.

So last year they sent it home in her backpack- unsolicited. So I kept sending it back. And every night she'd come home again with it in her back pack. She was carrying it back and forth like a pack mule.
Finally they sent home a note saying we hadn't paid for it.
I didn't want to argue, I felt coerced and I paid for it.

Used it once like i said.

This year it's in her back pack again... I'll see how long we can shuttle it back and forth until they get the hint that I don't want it.

Last year they sent home some catalog with overpriced cakes and cookie dough and stuff.
It went in the trash.

Sorry, I pay enough taxes and I pay my PTA dues. And I send in 87 glue stickers and 47 boxes of pencils at the start of the year.
I'm not hocking crap for them too

Re: Spinoff to sales rant

My school district has a write a check campaign. Just send them cash. PTO dues are $50 per kid. then there is $10 for the teacher gift. We also have the kids stuff book. Which I do use, but this year the coupons are not as good as those from years past, so it is annoying. My son is a scout, so we have the popcorn too. It is all $$$$$$$$$.

Ugh, the freaking Kid Stuff book. Last year (DD was in 3rd) I said enough of this ******** of sending it home and guilting me into buying it. I sent it back and will do so again. It's not worth it.

She came home today with a candy fundraiser which will go out with the recycling tomorrow. I am going to volunteer at a few events this year (first time in a while) and that's my contribution. I can't deal with the fundraising.

I tried that last year! And they just kept sending it back home and then i got the overdue notice.
It's currently in her backpack now and we are on about the 4th relay of me putting it back in there and them sending her back home with it.
Do i need to attach a note to it that says NO THANKS, PLEASE REMOVE FROM MY DAUGHTER'S BACK PACK AND LIGHTEN HER LOAD?
(and by the way these coupons suck ass? If you want me to purchase this overpriced book please include coupons for the local liquor store?)

I might get attacked for this but I think it's rude that you guys get forced to buy shit. Isn't that what taxes are for?? I went to an open house yesterday and didn't realize taxes were 20k!!! If I were to purchase that home and had to deal with these fundraisers, I'd be livid!!

Exactly! Plus you have to now buy enough school supplies for not just your kid but the entire class.

The money from the fundraisers go to "extras" that are provided through the PTA at the school. Dances, family fun nights, special events, etc. Stuff that the school district doesn't pay for, or provide. With that said, no one is forced to buy or sell anything. I don't sell most of the stuff that comes home. I don't do the Kidsstuff book anymore (you do need to send a note back saying you don't want it though!).

My thought is that if you want to participate in these extras you should have to pay for them. Sell tickets to dances, family fun nights etc.
Don't make everyone feel obligated to participate in constant fund raisers to fund all this extra stuff if they aren't interested in the extras and events.

Spinoff to sales rant

As a PTA President, I agree there is alot of fundraising but it's all fundraising for a purpose. To give back to your children. There is a multitude of different fundraisers that go out because everyone does not like the same things. No one is obligated to buy anything and we do not put a big push on selling. We actually tell people not to be overwhelmed with the amount coming home but if they can find one thing during the year to support, it would be appreciated.

I would love all the families to just write a check and do no fundraising but less than half of the families would participate and we'd be left with no money (at least in our school).

For the Kidstuff books, totally agree they are a pain in the butt but we do not send them home with the students, we sell them online or at events. Email the teacher and tell them to take it from her backpack. The might not know you have sent it back.

OMG I'd be livid if I got one from our daycare/preschool when I was paying a flucking MORTGAGE PAYMENT every single month for her to go there.
I would have absolutely given them a piece of my mind!

I get that this may be an ignorant statement but with enormous school budgets and rising property taxes, why is it necessary to do so much fundraising? When I was in school we had maybe 1 fundraiser per year.

Honestly I would attach a note, the back and forth isn't telling them you don't want it. They could say they thought you didn't see it (I know impossible). I would send a note less aggravation. If you don't say it they don't know for sure

I'm on the PTA this year so I can tell you that the school district (taxes) actually do NOT fund any of the extra fun activities for the students such as movie nights, holiday dances, STEM night, End of the Year school wide party, and all of the other fun things that take place outside of school hours. That is ALL funded by the PTA so that is what the fundraising money goes to.

That being said, I actually hate the take home fundraisers too. I think most parents, including myself, think they are a pain but I try to at least buy something from all of them to help out the school. The PTA always needs all of the help it can get. Chat Icon

DD is in private pre-k that we pay a sh*t ton of money for. THREE fundraising books were sent home the first day. They went right in the garbage. They are out of control!
