Boy Scout sales rant!

We do girls scouts have $6 box of cookies they sell and Boys Scouts have $30 bags of popcorn?

My grandsons just joined BS and the fund raisers have started. When my daughter sent me the link I was floored by what they are charging. Granted $22.50 of that $30 goes to their local scouting. But I'm sorry that is just outrageous pricing! They need to figure out a better way to fundraise. I mean how many sales will they get at these prices? They would do better off selling microwave packs for $5.

Anyone else in boys scouts and come across this?

I used to buy the popcorn tubs from someone at work for boyscouts, going back a pretty long time. I'm sure they make money or they wouldn't still be doing it.

Yes, its ridiculous!! My son was in scouts for 5 years and the prices are insane. And the bag is not even that big. I don't know why they don't so some other type of fundraiser. When I was involved we did live holiday wreaths for the same price as a bag of popcorn!

Girl Scout cookies are $4 in our region, and the troop gets .60 for each box, which is peanuts!! I love that the Boy Scouts get that much AND can use it for their own scout's camp, etc. Our money can only be pooled and used as a troop. It IS expensive, so I would just buy it and call it a donation with a bonus product Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Boy Scout sales rant!

They actually make a surprising amount of money from the popcorn sales.
Last year, at least 3 troops in Suffolk County sold over $10,000 total, and several boys (I'm sure their parents did most of the selling....) sold around $2,500 each.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but when I was in scouts, they sold Hershey candy bars. The bars were $1 and the scouts got $.50

My Troop doesn't sell popcorn, but my Cub Scout Pack did, and when we did, a lot of people would just give us donations.
I definitely agree that the prices are too high, and there aren't any "entry-level" items to buy if you only have a few dollars handy.

I refused to sell it to family members. It's too much. I think if they lowered the price they would sell more and still make the same money. I know it's charity but asking someone to pay $10 for a $1 bag of popcorn is out of control. A lot of other Cub Scout moms feel the same way.

Then they should talk to the Pack Committee. The popcorn sale is never mandated or required by Council. It's an option that is encouraged, but many packs do their own fund raisers. It's the committee that decides to go ahead with it.

If they were cheaper I'd be more inclined to purchase 2 $10 bags than 1 $30 bag.

DH has been known to drive out of the parking lot if he sees them there. He thinks it's way to expensive. I usually just buy the cheapest thing they have or I just donate whatever small bill I have on me. I think it goes to a good cause.

I hate all this stuff. I hate the need to HAvE to buy something. The boy came home on day two with a fundraiser. Know what? I bought nothing and I'm not handing it out. More crap I don't need.

I keep coming back to these numbers.
So the boys get to sell approx 84 bags to get that total ($2500)l. And the girls need to sell approx 415 boxes for the same total?!

That's just crazy! Seems a bit unfair.

OUr troop sells it and I find it embarrassing. I cringe when people ask how much and I tell them 25$. It is awful. So many people pick their jaw off the floor and leave. If they lowered the prices they would sell more. We did the king kullen ambush last weekend.

Do they sell peanuts at those tables?

I thought I remember seeing that at one time.

Boy Scout sales rant!

Do they at least sell the chocolate covered pretzels? I can at least justify paying a premium for those. But for popcorn? Nah.

If I absolutely HAVE to go in, and they are at BOTH doors, I will put my cell phone to my ear and fake talk on the way in and out so they don't bother me.
I am sorry but I shouldn't be harassed when I need to go food shopping.
I donate to what I chose.

Not sure about others but they don't have them on my grandsons links.

They do have a bag of chocolate peanut clusters though.

As for them being outside stores. I just tell them no thank you. Same with Girl Scouts. Unless I'm really craving a cookie..

Me too. I'm always on a diet. I think people shouldn't feel ashamed to just say no thank you.
