I would just hope that there is a happy medium between the PTA, events, and money-raising efforts. Maybe it's because I grew up in a district that didn't have the funds for luxuries like dances every year, all kinds of game nights, dinners, awards, etc. The fun things we did get to do we always eagerly looked forward to and appreciated. It seems to me that this is just another way districts are "keeping up with the Jones'" so to speak. If you're alienating parents at the expense of doing a million activities, it seems counter productive.

How do you think those fun things you "eagerly looked forward to and appreciated" were actually paid for? Most likely from the PTA Chat Icon I don't know any district that provides lavish events, and is worried about keeping up with other districts and their events. That is just silly.

Another awesome event our school does is RIF (Reading is Fundamental). Our PTA spends A LOT of money on books and each child gets to pick 1 book for FREE (2 if they complete a quiz, etc.) I don't think that's lavish or over the top. Events like that wouldn't happen without fundraising.

Yes I am well aware that our once a year elementary school family fun night was funded by the PTA. We had NO dances except for senior prom, 1 senior awards dinner, and that was basically it. We didn't have dances for every season, ice cream socials, spaghetti dinners, etc. So if I personally feel that these events are excessive to the point of harassing parents to fundraise, why can't I think that? My kid will participate in whatever I feel is appropriate but I am not going to feel shamed into supporting excess for no reason.

PTA shaming. LOLOL Chat Icon

Again, PTA does more than just "fun things". They support a lot of other programs in the school.

Clearly the PTA moms on this thread get twisted when you don't agree with them

No, not really. I just think in general people don't understand the PTA's role in the school. Especially people who don't even have kids in school yet. Just sayin.

People honestly don't realize how little the school does and how much the PTO/PTA does for the children.
Without the little money they make from the fundraisers there would be nothing.
Our fundraising purchases new uniforms for sports teams, something I'm sure the same parents would be complaining they had to purchase out of pocket. We also purchased new beakers for the science lab, robots for the robotics club among other things.
Every single event for the children including book fairs, holiday fairs, assemblies, graduations, dances, performances, those refreshments and cookies you are snacking on during open house or meet the teacher....
Maybe speak to your PTO in your school and find out what the money actually goes towards I'm sure you'll be surprised. We all have the option to not participate.

Absolutely. The money goes way beyond things that are fun and is used to supplement the school budget. In our school the money is used for everything from educational assemblies to copy paper to computers. I live in a middle/ upper middle class neighborhood and maybe 20% of parents pay their SEVEN DOLLAR dues. I also wish every parent could come to just one function or one bake sale and see how the kids love it.

Three years ago our PTA started paying eight grand a year for an educational program that ended up consistently raising test scores. The school just didn't have the money for it without the PTA. People just don't realize Chat Icon

We love our PTA. They do so much for our district. They just funded a $20,000 new projector for the school. They dont force force you to join but if you do they only ask 10 for dues.

It's really sad that the school taxes don't go for things like copy paper, computers and projectors. Those don't seem like "extras" to me.

And isn't a chunk of the lotto suppose to be used for schools? I wonder how much actually is distributed out.

Terrible really.

I don't/won't hate on the PTA. They work their butts off for the kids.
It just shouldn't have to be that way.

My daughter just joined the PTA and she loves it. Very eager to help the kids.

Big props to anyone involved.

First, don't put words in my mouth because I didn't say that is what you thought. I said it's hard to form an opinion without having the experience. Even I didn't fully understand their role until my DD started school so just relax. Being in school and seeing firsthand what goes on in the school matters and you might feel very differently once your child is in school.

I throw them all out and I also send the coupon book back and forth until they give up.

All of these "fun things" they pay for, we don't attend. We have enough going on......

What about the assemblies at school that the children attend. If your school has more than one, I'm positive that the PTA is funding the rest. Cultural Arts is the largest part of the budget. Or who is running the kindergarten orientation, kindergarten playdates, welcome to school meetings for new families, volunteering to help out at concerts and moving up ceremonies. Our fund for supplying books to sick children in the district. Paying for extra clothes for the nurse to have when the younger children mess up their clothes (which happens ALOT). There are so many other things that PTAs do other than "fun activities" that you don't want to attend. It's part of your community and it should be supported in some way. We aren't talking about 100s or dollars but paying your membership and maybe participating in one fundraiser really isn't too much to ask.

I must have a ****** pta because I had to send in a change of clothes for my DD in case she dirtied hers and we don't have Kindergarten play dates.
And our latest fun activity was a back to school "picnic" where we had to bring our own food and got to pay for Mr. Softee.

same here. No assemblies. K orientation is run by the teachers before school, we send our kids in to "class" and the teachers do their thing for an hour or so and we go and get them. Send in our OWN change of clothes, and WTF are Kindergarten playdates, no thanks! LOL!! We also had "family night" where we had to bring our own picnic dinner and pay for Mr Softee. We have Haunted Hallways where the students decorate the halls, but that is done by parents who buy their own supplies and candy for candy bowls at their stations. Science club - we pay for and NO WAY in hell am I paying for copy paper for my kids school. I pay through the wazzoo in taxes and if copy paper falls to the PTA then there is some SERIOUS mishandling of funds within the district. We come from an upper middle class district too. Im not saying they dont do anything, Im sure they work hard but if I feel like fundraising is excessive then Im OK with not doing it.....its been school for 3 weeks, we have had THREE fundraisers come home already - Plant Sale, Coupon Book and a Football game fundraiser.

Do you have kids in elementary school? Just curious. Because if you do, you would appreciate all of the things they do for the students.

My DD's school has some really nice things planned for the kids and I don't think it's in any way too much, over the top, or keeping up with anyone. I'll tell you right now, we have pretty good turnouts for many of the PTA sponsored events so to be honest, we should really see more participation and help from the parents in the school. These events don't happen without everyone's help. Everyone loves the activities the PTA provides but when they have to be cancelled due to lack of funding or help, the parents in the school are the first to complain how there is nothing for their kids at the school.

The PTA isn't asking for hours and hours of your time and a ton of your money but every little bit of both helps. They aren't trying to alienate anyone, quite the contrary. They are trying very hard to provide an enriching, fun, community feeling among the school. Everyone should be on board with helping out, it's all greatly appreciated and everyone benefits. I agree with you 100%.

In have a 3 year old, so no fundraising yet.

You have your opinion I have mine.

I am as anti keeping up with the Joneses as anyone and I don't see it that way; at least in my district, nothing is flashy or excessive. There is a Halloween dance, some time of winter social, a reading program, an ice cream event, etc.

I am old enough that I no longer remember if we did these things when I was in elementary school but they're simple, fun events so whether we used to have them or not I am glad we do now.

Respectfully, you might change your mind in a few years. I know I have changed my mind about a few things parenting related over the years!

I totally get that - when I worked in catering there were a few districts we dealt with that did extravagant proms, international dinners, awards dinners, sports dinners, fashion shows, etc. I just don't think districts need 5 million special events if people are annoyed at all the fundraising.

Those aren't typically funded by the PTA.

I doubt that is the norm. Prom is typically self funded with the sales of tickets that cover the plate at the catering hall. Some extra costs are probably offset by prom fundraisers, which are not the same as the PTA. I believe our HS does a prom fashion show as a fundraiser.

I don't think a prom in a catering hall is over the top, keeping up with thee Jones either though. It's prom. That's just what is done.

I have a question for the moms that are part of the PTA or have experience with these sales....
Can I just send in a check for $50 and a note saying id rather give the cash directly to the PTA fund vs selling stuff?
Would that be frowned upon?

Re: Spinoff to sales rant

This thread is seriously "bad moms" and I'm loving it. I am a teacher and a parent. While I think that the PTA does a lot of good for the schools, it is different in every school (even within a district) and is very self serving. Also, maybe if they disassociated themselves with "national PTA" they would have more money to give back to school bc most of dues goes to national.

I love our PTA, and I attend meetings and volunteer even though I work full time. They do so much. The PTA raised the money to put in a flashing speed sign in front of school. That should have been up to the town, but God only knows how long that would take. Our dues are only $5 a kid. There is a spot to add a donation, but I think they would still send home the fundraisers regardless. No big deal if you don't participate. I have plenty of friends that are very involved in PTA, but only purchase one item for themselves, they don't sell to family and friends.

How much money goes to the PTA when someone purchases a $10 gift wrap set? I'm curious because I think many people would rather hand over $5 and get nothing than see a big cut go to the company providing the sale items. If i got a letter from the PTA that said "please send in $20 to cover school events for this year" i'd be happy to comply.

I have a question for the moms that are part of the PTA or have experience with these sales....
Can I just send in a check for $50 and a note saying id rather give the cash directly to the PTA fund vs selling stuff?
Would that be frowned upon?

I love our PTA, and I attend meetings and volunteer even though I work full time. They do so much. The PTA raised the money to put in a flashing speed sign in front of school. That should have been up to the town, but God only knows how long that would take. Our dues are only $5 a kid. There is a spot to add a donation, but I think they would still send home the fundraisers regardless. No big deal if you don't participate. I have plenty of friends that are very involved in PTA, but only purchase one item for themselves, they don't sell to family and friends.

All fundraisers have a different percentage of profit so it is hard to say. But if you are buying gift wrap you are getting a product in return, not just giving money to a company.

I am sure that all PTAs would welcome donation money in lieu of fundraising but the fact is that most people will not participate in just sending over a donation check. They will have the same exact arguments that is on this thread about fundraising. So if you want to send in a donation check, that's awesome. If you want to buy some of the fundraising, that's also awesome. Anything, volunteer time or money, is appreciated

I refuse to participate in these ridiculous fundraisers. The ONLYYYYY one I consider are the $1 chocolate bars because I pay for the box in advance, bring it to the office, leave it on a file cabinet with an envelope and it sells itself. That is it. It is affordable and there is no waiting for delivery.

I got one the first week DD went back to school. In went right in the garbage. My DS daycare/preschool is selling those kid books refuse to buy one an won't do any of the fundraising stuff esp. For a school I pay a ton of money to go to

OMG I'd be livid if I got one from our daycare/preschool when I was paying a flucking MORTGAGE PAYMENT every single month for her to go there.
I would have absolutely given them a piece of my mind!

my mom picked up my son last night. I looked in his bag this book was in it. Guess what is getting handed right back to them today Chat Icon Chat Icon

Just wanted to say that yesterday I was unpacking my son's backpack after I got home from work and I saw a packet for a yankee candle fundraiser. I had to laugh because it made me think of this thread.
