OMG I'd be livid if I got one from our daycare/preschool when I was paying a flucking MORTGAGE PAYMENT every single month for her to go there.
I would have absolutely given them a piece of my mind!
DD is in private pre-k that we pay a sh*t ton of money for. THREE fundraising books were sent home the first day. They went right in the garbage. They are out of control!

To me the PTA puts the "fun" in school. My son is only in first grade but last year he really enjoyed all the events so I am happy to support them.
I try to do most of the fundraisers. I am more inclined to do the non food ones. I am not paying $20 for a pizza or pretzel making kit.
With the coupon book - yes, you have to write a note declining it. They did at least explain that to us so everything was clear.

The money from the fundraisers go to "extras" that are provided through the PTA at the school. Dances, family fun nights, special events, etc. Stuff that the school district doesn't pay for, or provide. With that said, no one is forced to buy or sell anything. I don't sell most of the stuff that comes home. I don't do the Kidsstuff book anymore (you do need to send a note back saying you don't want it though!).
My thought is that if you want to participate in these extras you should have to pay for them. Sell tickets to dances, family fun nights etc.
Don't make everyone feel obligated to participate in constant fund raisers to fund all this extra stuff if they aren't interested in the extras and events.
Many of the extras take place during school hours. For instance, we had Sweetbriar Nature Center visit our school. They brought animals, etc. The kids LOVED it. It certainly wasn't free, and the school district isn't paying for it. We've actually done quite a few events that outside vendors come in for. No one should feel "obligated" to sell stuff. I know our PTA isn't pushing it down people's throats. Just throw it out. No big deal at all ;)

You're right however, you have NO idea how hard it is to get people involved in the PTA. I don't think the majority of parents realize how much the PTA does and how all of the fun events they enjoy with their kids are paid for and run by PTA members. Getting volunteers to chair events (like a carnival) is difficult and even getting a family to just pay the $10 dues to be a member (without doing any volunteering) is a real challenge too! Everyone wants the fun school activities but those things don't happen without parent involvement in the PTA.

Catholic school, so I'm paying tuition too, plus fees and fees, and then some more fees. I'm just going to open a joint account with the school and deposit my paycheck in there so they can take all they want. 
ETA: Book fair, Halloween fair, Christmas fair, Mother's day fair. Plus we purchase half our school supplies through the school. One day I should add it all up.

i went to greek school after reg school and they had the worlds finest fundraiser! my dad would buy the entire box. Parents didnt have any restrictions for me either so I would eat the entire box in like a week. faaatttttttttty

Spinoff to sales rant
People honestly don't realize how little the school does and how much the PTO/PTA does for the children.
Without the little money they make from the fundraisers there would be nothing.
Our fundraising purchases new uniforms for sports teams, something I'm sure the same parents would be complaining they had to purchase out of pocket. We also purchased new beakers for the science lab, robots for the robotics club among other things.
Every single event for the children including book fairs, holiday fairs, assemblies, graduations,dances, performances, those refreshments and cookies you are snacking on during open house or meet the teacher....
Maybe speak to your PTO in your school and find out what the money actually goes towards I'm sure you'll be surprised. We all have the option to not participate.

I'm so mean to my kids when they bring that box home. I don't even open it until I get to work. There are at least 3 people here who will throw me a $10 or whatever and not take any, so then I'll take a certain number of bars back home for my kids. There is NO WAY I'm giving my kids free reign over 60 bars! Plus, I'd eat them all after they went to bed..

And it's cute that she gets to shop for me- and I cherish everything because she picks it out herself and is so proud.
But how are my PTA dues and all the fundraising going to pay for a book fair and/or holiday boutique that is in itself a fundraiser?
I don't attend any of the events at the school after hours like picnics and family fun nights etc , so I can't speak to those. And I am sure other people go and have a great time. So for that kind of stuff I don't mind.
And I wouldn't even mind if they came to me and said hey listen the dues aren't enough we need more. I'd gladly give.
I just don't want to have to buy overpriced wrapping paper or worse, try to sell that crap to my family and friends.
I'd rather just write out a check.

Yes we got a Tanger coupon book but only if you bought the family membership.
Again, I don't mind supporting but I am not a fan of fundraisers of any kind.

You should then!! Write a check and send it in a nice card to the PTA and make a donation. When my DD sells GS cookies I had lots of people just give us money to put towards the fundraising but they didn't even want the cookies. I don't know the specific rules for the PTA regarding accepting monetary gifts (I am not the treasurer) but I would imagine any type of gift would be appreciated.

Unfortunately there's usually not an Opt out list, so just toss them, ignore them, no harm no foul.
Just trying to point out that tax dollars go to nothing, the school pays for nothing, and the fundraising is done all to give back things to the kids that the school doesn't. No big salaries are getting paid with PTO money, no vacations...it all strictly goes back to the kids and classrooms.

People honestly don't realize how little the school does and how much the PTO/PTA does for the children.
Without the little money they make from the fundraisers there would be nothing.
Our fundraising purchases new uniforms for sports teams, something I'm sure the same parents would be complaining they had to purchase out of pocket. We also purchased new beakers for the science lab, robots for the robotics club among other things.
Every single event for the children including book fairs, holiday fairs, assemblies, graduations,dances, performances, those refreshments and cookies you are snacking on during open house or meet the teacher....
Maybe speak to your PTO in your school and find out what the money actually goes towards I'm sure you'll be surprised. We all have the option to not participate.
I get it, I do.
I buy my PTA membership each year and I even pay for the family one which is $16 vs $8.
But the book fair is a fund raiser too. DD came home with a book that cost $10 that I found on amazon for $5. And the same with the holiday boutique-they are selling dollar store crap for $10. And it's cute that she gets to shop for me- and I cherish everything because she picks it out herself and is so proud.
But how are my PTA dues and all the fundraising going to pay for a book fair and/or holiday boutique that is in itself a fundraiser?
I don't attend any of the events at the school after hours like picnics and family fun nights etc , so I can't speak to those. And I am sure other people go and have a great time. So for that kind of stuff I don't mind.
And I wouldn't even mind if they came to me and said hey listen the dues aren't enough we need more. I'd gladly give.
I just don't want to have to buy overpriced wrapping paper or worse, try to sell that crap to my family and friends.
I'd rather just write out a check.
You should then!! Write a check and send it in a nice card to the PTA and make a donation. When my DD sells GS cookies I had lots of people just give us money to put towards the fundraising but they didn't even want the cookies. I don't know the specific rules for the PTA regarding accepting monetary gifts (I am not the treasurer) but I would imagine any type of gift would be appreciated.
I honestly think I am going to do this the next time something comes out to sell.
I'd feel better than just tossing the catalog in the trash like i did last year.

Spinoff to sales rant
I just agreed to buy the coupon book from my niece. I was told it had BRU, Friendly's Target, McDonald's, etc coupons. She's my niece so I'll buy it but am I going to regret it?

Honestly Ive bought the book 3 times and have never ONCE used a coupon from there let alone $25 worth.

Yeah the book kind of sucks.
First off I always always forget to use it. Always.
And the coupons for Bed Bath etc you can get online or I get tons sent to my home.
I never remember it when I go to McD's- which isn't even often.
I never saw a Target coupon in there.
More like Annie Sez, and other stores I have none of near me.
And the coupons are like- can only be used on a Tuesday during a full moon and on an item that is red in color.

The first couple of years we got it - it paid for itself. The first pages of coupons were $5 off of $50 at the supermarket or $5 off $25 at toys r us. Now, not so much...
I was overwhelmed by the amount of fundraising stuff that came home at the beginning of school last year, along with the requests for the school BBQ and school pictures, and tricky tray, I felt like I was writing weekly checks to the PTA. But, I learned a lot of the non coupon book fundraisers don't get much traction - like 50 kids in the school may do them (out of 300-350 kids) so I don't feel bad not doing them. I buy what I like and discard the rest.
