It is ABHORRENT that we are so petrified of losing our right to own guns that we do absolutely NOTHING when children are murdered. And now 50 people partying and having a good time were also murdered, by someone who was allowed to legally purchase his weapons. ABHORRENT.

He was AMERICAN BORN. That means this is NOT in any way, shape or form an immigration problem. Enough with that nonsense already.

He swore allegiance to ISIS right before he started shooting. But now we hear that he was on gay dating sites and frequented that club for years. IMO He capitalized on his Muslim heritage and sound bites of today in order to cover his self loathing and shame.

And while people point to Paris as an example of gun legislation failing to protect their citizens, I'd like to point to Australia as an example of successful one. 20 years, no mass shootings. If our whole country had the same restrictions in every state, we would absolutely reduce the amount of gun violence. It wouldn't eliminate it completely, just like drunk driving laws haven't eliminated drunk drivers. But it has reduced it.

It's if that didn't change people's minds about guns and gun laws nothing will. I think about those children every single time I put my daughter ok the bus. Im so sick of the sadness! Maybe we can't stop every lunatic with a gun but let's make it a hell of a lot harder for them to get guns.

So why then was this terrorist cheering when 9/11 happened? Stood up and cheered in his classroom? reports of fellow Students saying this are now coming out. So yet, this is just an American born Muslim who is in the closet and self loathing and "mentally ill", but is glad when 9/11 is occurring and thousands are dying? Were all the people who died on 9/11 gay?

Re: Orlando shooting

It's not like you can just go to another state and buy a gun. You have to have ID that shows you live in that state. Many state laws are effective and the mandatory waiting periods are a good thing. I understand why there are so many people against an outright ban, but I really don't know why they can't make a mental health screening a requirement. That would be easy to implement even for private sellers. They could make a little certificate saying you passed that you would have to show before anyone is allowed to sell you a gun.

Orlando shooting

I couldn't agree more with a dear frriend's words:
"I have several (responsible) friends who own guns and support personal gun rights. That being said, it's clear, even to them, that the gun control laws need to change. It's not about taking anyone's guns. It's about being more thorough about only giving the licensed, appropriate individuals possession. Actually, in an ideal world, everyone of our guns should have Touch ID tech, so that only the licensed and verified owners can fire them. Realistically, assault weapons have zero need in the hands of individuals not in the military."

I haven't read many posts in this thread, but does anyone else think this kid was just mentally ill and was a terrorist/ ISIS wannabe?

Yes.

And I think he was gay. And filled with loathing and self hate. He apparently was so outraged by seeing two men kiss a few months ago, according to his dad.

Just put on the news and news reports of him being a regular in many gay clubs back in his academy days.

What's that saying? Those who doth protest too much?

ITA he was gay. i think that so much more about this is coming out every day, and this isn't the last we're hearing of it. Not that it matters as much as one true fact: He was a sick sick individual. Chat Icon

I saw this classmate of his this morning - and sorry, but it totally looked to me like this guy was capitalizing on the fact that he once went to school with an infamous person.

"Mateen's former classmate in Stuart, Fla., told the Washington Post that he "started jumping up-and-down and cheered on the terrorists," as other students watched the attacks happen on TV."
- when the attacks were happening, no one knew WHO perpetrated them, let alone that they were muslim terrorists so this seems a little implausible to me
So maybe this is just a sign that the guy was unbalanced in general, and thats it.

From everything we're hearing now - he was a lone wolf unbalanced, self hating guy who was probably dealing with the fact that he was gay himself (he went to that same club for several years they're now saying and was also on gay dating sites) and didn't know how to handle it.
His disturbed unbalanced mind thought he'd just capitalize on the anti muslim sentiment at the same time he was really just hating himself and taking it out on the community he saw as the root of his problem.
I'm pretty sure if you asked ISIS before Sunday if they'd ever heard of this guy, they'd say no. He just claimed allegiance to them in order to add more confusion to the issue.

Not saying he wasn't a terrorist in the sense that he wanted to create mass hysteria and terror.. but i'm pretty sure blaming muslims or immigration is not the answer here

Me, i blame the gun laws and the fbi's inability to have him put on a no guns purchasing list.

He was also on the FBI's terrorist watch list. You don't get picked to be on something like that just because you hate gay people right? He had to have activity in his past that was indicative of something other than being anti-gay/mentally ill.

He was on the watch list already. Which tells me he had some ties to terrorists at one point or another.

I said from the get go this guy is gay. That was an easy discovery. But hating yourself because youre gay does t make you kill all those people.

Between his ties to terrorist, hating himself, he beat his wife... There's a lot there.

I won't get into gun control

He was taken off the list after the FBI interviewed him, and was determined not to be a terrorist threat. (How well the FBI did in their analysis is a whole other discussion.... Chat Icon ) He wasn't on the list when he bought his guns, which is why he passed the background check.

A significant number of congressional seats are up for grabs this November. It's time we the voters take those who have the NRA in their pockets out of office.

I'm not sure what (if any) debate there is here.

He was three things:

1) a terrorist. He was on a watch list and interviewed by FBI and a sympathizer
2) gay and filled with self hatred
3) mentally ill (I believe all terrorists are, and that includes those who are brainwashed)

The fact that he did this to the gay community is awful and gives it another terrible angle.

-his wife or whatever she was should be investigated and found guilty of prior knowledge and held accountable
-every single family member he has should be thoroughly investigated and watched continually

And then the gun issue should be addressed somehow

All of that said..... There are way more anti-Muslim people here in America than there are terrorists. I refuse to subscribe to "all Muslims should not be trusted" mentality.

I think what Eroxgirl is sayin - is that this has nothing to do with immigration. a previous poster said that this is a terrorist and immigration situation, not a gun situation.

this guy was definitely up to no good to make it on the watch list. I don't think anyone can challenge that.

But he was from here… It's not like he was an immigrant.

I'm as liberal as they come, but if you're on the FBI watchlist or the CIA's radar… You need to get the **** out and stay out and STILL be watched somehow. Plain and simple. You certainly shouldn't be able to get a gun or any type of weapon or be able to fly. Not in these times. And that goes for any sympathizer… Anyone at all… Even the lovable pastor down south who might be a sympathizer towards people who blew up abortion clinics, for example.

There is seriously something so screwed up with this country .. You can't even build a fence past a certain height in certain towns… But you could be on the watch list and still get a gun and work for a huge national security company and be known by people in your life to harbor these thoughts and mentality.

We need reform. In all ******* aspects. I don't know when it's going to happen or what it will take.

That's what I meant - you shouldn't ever be removed once oN. It should be a lifelong thing and I'm sorry to say- if you're on it, family needs to be investigated as well. Your employer should be notified and investigated to. National security is nothing to take lightly IMO. We have rights as citizens but we also all should have the right to be kept
safe from other citizens who are the scum of the earth.

You get me. Chat Icon

We have to stop screaming "CLOSE THE BORDERS" when the guilty party was born here. That's it.

This. Immigration reform wouldn't have stopped James Holmes, Adam Lanza, Dyla Kleibold, Eric Harris, or that kid in South Carolina.

And on a different note, sorry to get off topic, this is pretty horrific sentiment from a religious leader right here in America: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/california-pastor-celebrates-massacre-orlando-gay-club-article-1.2673335

If no change was made after 20 FIRST GRADERS were murdered in their CLASSROOM what makes anyone think our elected officials will finally stand up and do something now???

Yup..so freaking sad and angering but very true. If 20 first graders were massacred in cold blood and officials did NOTHING to change the laws..they sure as hell won't do anything now either. Disgusting.
