Parking Lot Etiquette with Babies

Honesty if I had to squeeze out of my car I would have fond another spot (even if I had to walk further) unless it was the only spot left.

I wouldn't want myself or someone else squeezing.

Parking Lot Etiquette with Babies

I wouldn't have even parked there for fear that someone would key my car. I have also been in that ladies position, and have felt like keying someones car who parked too over or on the line. It is so hard to get kids in the car, you probably should have moved out of consideration.

Like some PP's said, if it took me 5 minutes to park in a spot, I would've said screw it and parked somewhere else. And, I would've absolutely moved the car if I saw a woman and a baby and knew that they couldn't get in.

I would have moved and let her open the door wide to get the baby in - if for no other reason than the fact that she may have destroyed my car trying to do it herself.
Was she wrong to park like an idiot? Yes - but I wouldn't spite myself on principle if it meant a nice ding in my door - KWIM?

yeah that's the thing. If it was that tight you know she would be dinging your door trying to get the baby in.
I'd be too worried about that to not move.

I've been in that woman's position before and I have been pissed when people park right on the line. If the space was that tight, I think you should have found a different spot. That's what I would have done.

As for taking 5 minutes to get your kid in the car, it is definitely possible. My DS is a maniac when I try to put him in his car seat. It is like a sporting even trying to wrestle him into his seat. I usually try to let people pull out before I attempt to get him in his seat since I know it is such an ordeal.

Before I had kids, I would have seen nothing wrong with what you did. Now that I have kids and am currently lugging an infant seat myself, I definitely thought you were inconsiderate. You saw her, knew she couldn't fit in and just kept going. Its like she was the one who was punished for the person on your right parking like an idiot. I also think the woman at your son's school was a self absorbed ********.

Was it the woman that parked too close to your spot? Or if I read the op right... it was the car on the other side of you parked like a jerk? If she parked normally, I would have offered to back up so she could get her child in.

Am I missing something here? Why couldn't she get in on the other side of her car?

I would have backed my car out to let her put her baby in. I know that I personally can't put my infant seat in on the other side because my older child's convertible seat is there so not enough room to get the infant seat past it. In that woman's position, I would not have been able to get my baby into the car. What should she have done? Put her baby on the ground while she backed up enough to be able to open her car door?

I wouldn't have expected you to move the car if it were me. I can see why she may have given you the evil eye, but oh well, it sucks for her. A car parking too close to yours happens to everyone. The nasty eye roll may have been her way of dealing with it.

The dirty look she gave would have turned me off. But the mom in me would have asked her, would you like me to back out so you can get in?

But I don't think you did anything wrong.

That reminds me of another incident that happened this morning. Preschool parking lot is full with one spot left. I can't pull in because a mom is putting her baby in the car and her door is blocking me. She took like 5+ minutes and there was a line of cars behind me. Because she was taking so long, none of the cars behind me could move and other cars also couldn't pull out since the cars waiting were blocking them.

I no longer work so it didn't bother me so much but I could clearly see the dad behind me was fuming. DS was a few min late for school. Not a huge deal but I wished she would have hurried a little seeing the line of cars.

Dear fuming dad:
I am the type of person who would rather make 5 right turns rather than hold up a line of traffic just to make a Left. I really hate holding you up. You're probably in a rush, I get it. Trust me, you're making me a nervous wreck and I feel the pressure. I'm going as fast as I can, but I'm partially disabled. See, my balance is off, and I can't really feel all of the fingers in each hand, so it takes me a little longer to do the things other moms can do in mere seconds. It doesn't help that the baby is squirming and screaming, either. I'm trying my best, and I'm aware that I'm holding you up. Please just have some compassion and some mercy on me.
Signed,
Frantic mom

I don't think there is any right or wrong answer here. Maybe she should have parked in a less crowded part of the lot knowing she needed extra room to get the infant seat in her car...maybe you could have pulled out, but you are under no obligation to...it is what it is...the evil eye would have turned me off too...

I think it's funny that so many people are suggesting that op should have found another spot. This time of year it is impossible to find A spot let alone ANOTHER spot. I spent literally 25 minutes looking for a spot yesterday at Trader Joes! I dont care if I would have had to exit my car through the sunroof I was not leaving that spot lol!

I think it just comes back to basic common courtesy. You see someone struggling (or about to engage in a struggle) , then you do what you can to help. Especially during this time of year, it's just nice to do. Kwim?

I think that goes both ways...she said the woman immediately gave her the evil eye...maybe if she had asked nicely if she minded pulling out so she could quickly put the infant seat in without immediately giving an attitude, she would have done it...when someone gets nasty with me immediately, I'm less likely to bend over backwards to help them.

When I was 9 months pregnant, I parked in a parking lot. When I got back to my car, I found that the car to my left parked about 6 inches from my car. (This was not the car in the spot when I originally parked.) There I was, 9 months pregnant and completely unable to get in my car. To say I was angry is an understatement. To this day, I am always mindful of the way I park.

You saw her with a baby and you knew she couldn't get the child in? I'm sorry but I think you did the wrong thing. I understand that she gave you a nasty look but you should have done the right thing and moved.

I agree with this. I'm sorry but I think people just lack common decency at this point which is probably why she gave you the dirty look in the first place. I just don't understand why people can't be nice to one another??? And it's not about other people accommodating her decision to have a child , it's about the fact that now she has no way to get that carseat in the car! It's a baby for god's sake - in an infant carrier. I don't know if you have kids but I have been in a spot where people parked in a way that I couldn't get the infant carrier back in the car and it sucks!

That isn't the way it went down. This was over the weekend at a very busy mall. Only spot in sight. I struggled to get into the spot for a while and did not see her at all while I was actually parking. When I was getting out, she gave me the evil eye. I didn't know she had a baby at that point.

The whole thing happened pretty quickly. I saw her cursing and it did not make me want to squeeze back in my car and pull my car out after struggling to get in the space in the first place.

If there were more spots, I would obviously have taken another spot. I circled for a while just to find that spot.

Personally, I wouldn't have parked in the spot and would have cursed the person who parked like an a-hole as I drove by it.

If I did park there, I would have moved my car out for her to get in. Same goes for if it was an elderly person or bigger person. But that's just me. Her reaction I wouldn't say was right or wrong, just honest. She probably had it with the mall at that point and now she had to maneuver into her car with the baby.

This is why I shop online. And if I MUST go into a mall, it's when they first open on a weekday.

I was just thinking I am going to do the rest of my shopping online. No way I am going to the mall over the weekend for a long long time.

You saw her after you got out of your car and knew she couldn't get in. right? Callalilly didn't say you knew it while you were parking. But you were still there and saw her. Do you have kids? Do you know how hard it is with an infant in the carrier? I'm just curious because I wouldn't have known until it happened to me either.
