Radiation and holding a baby?

My sister is undergoing Radiation for Breast Cancer and is coming over today afterwards, for lunch and a visit.

My other sister just called me and told me to MAKE SURE that I do not let her hold the baby, because she will be emitting radiation for hours since she is getting the treatment this morning (she gets treatments 5x/week).

I looked it up online and got mixed answers.

My sister ALWAYS asks to hold Riley. I think it helps her a lot with her treatments to spend time with the baby, but we've always seen her on the weekend, not right after a treatment.

Do I need to ask her not to hold the baby? Should I call her now and ask her to speak with her doctor about it while she is getting her treatment?

I don't want to offend her by asking her to not hold Riley, but I also don't want to put Riley at risk!

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

I personally would not allow someone who just received radiation today to hold such a young baby. Not worth any slight risk if one exists. Chat Icon

I would call your OWN pediatrician for the answer to this first and foremost.

I would err on the side of caution and not let your sister hold the baby, as hard as that will be to ask of her. I know that when I had my kidney scans when DD was a baby, they ran the scans while injecting a radioactive dye through my kidneys. I was told I wasn't to be near my kids for 24 hours after the scans. Maybe your sister can ask her doctor what they think?Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think your sister will understand protecting your baby. If she loves your baby that much, she should. Plus, if it comes from her doc and not you, it might be easier to swallow.

I think you should ask her to check with her doctor, get the official advice on this from someone who really knows.

I am so sorry to hear that our sister has breast cancerChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would mention it to her first so she is not alarmed when she gets there, ask her to ask her doctor AND I would call your Ped so you can have two opinions as doctors always seem to differ.

Good luckChat Icon

My father was told to have no contact with me when I was pregnant when he was considering radiation.

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

I'm sorry you're going through this. However my OB recommended I have my seat at work moved when I mentioned my office-mate was going through radiation, so idk if she should even be close to the baby Chat Icon

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

I would not let her hold the baby. I would call your ped to get their perspective but frankly I would want to wait a a day between radiation and having a newborn in the same room. Sorry for the bad situation your family is going through.

My friends husband was not allowed in the house when he was having radiation when their young child was born - he had to be out for wither 24 or 48 hours. I would call your doctor asap

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

My sister just finished radiation. She had pinpoint radiation for cancer in her mouth. Since she had a new kind of radiation she was not given any restrictions. She was able to hug and kiss all the kids and I had no issue letting her near me and my belly. I would have your sister ask her doctor about it. When we asked my sisters doctor they just said no contact with children or pregnant woman after her pet scan. But after her radiation treatments it was fine. I think her doctor would know best in this case, and I would absolutely ask not just about holding the baby, but about being near the baby. i am sure she will understand! maybe you can have someone watch the baby and you and your sis can spend some time along together.

i wish her a very fast and complete recovery!

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

My Aunt was told not to have any contact with the kids .......

Call and ask your Ped, or ask her to ask her Dr.

I understand completely not wanting to hurt your sister, but you have to do what's best for the baby

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

I went through this last year as my brother went through chemo and radiation treatments.

I went to the source - I called my pediatrician and explained the circumstances and asked what was safe. My ped is also involved w/ped cancer, so he asked me for the name of the drugs my brother was given for his treatments and told me what was safe and what wasn't.

There were times my DD had to stay away and other times there wasn't an issue - it all depends on the drugs used.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! It's tough - I know, my brother died in January.

I'm sorry about your sister and what she is going through. If she hasn't been told by her doctor that she should not handle children then you have to let her know...its tough but I'm sure she'll understand.

Re: Radiation and holding a baby?

She asked her doctor. He said that it was 100% safe with the type of radiation she is receiving. If she had a radioactive isotope inserted in her body then it wouldn't have been safe---but she doesn't have that.

So she came over and we had such a great day together. Friday is her last treatment, and she is relieved that this is almost over. She held the baby and loved her up, and I am so glad that she was able to!

Thank you, everyone, for your responses!Chat Icon

i am pregnant and my aunt will be going through radiation soon
i asked my ob if i can be around her while she is getting treatments and she said yes
the type of radiation that you shouldn't be around is the implantation one like for prostate cancer, etc.
im glad you had a nice day with her and i hope she makes a full recoveryChat Icon

This exactly. There are many different kinds of radiation and usually when the Radiation therapy nurses first consult the patient they will specifically state restrictions. I am glad she was able to hold the baby!
