"You look good holding a baby"
GOD HOW I EFFING HATE THAT PHRASE.
What is the point of that phrase?
Is there anyone who looks BAD holding a baby?
Is there anyone out there who holds a baby and people say- "Oh boy, you look really bad holding that baby- you shouldn't have any" ?
Is it possible to look bad holding a baby?
I don't get it. What does that mean?
I don't look good in yellow, I don't look good with short hair, I look good in a dress, I look good holding a martini... but how does a baby become an accessory that you either look good or bad with??
I hear it all the time- and I just want to scream- "I am not having any, I dont' want any and you saying I look GOOD holding this baby is not going to change my mind"
Seriously- do people have social defects???

Say, "Yeah, I know! I'm doing good, I haven't dropped it once!"

Next time someone asks me to hold a baby I am going to hold it away from my body with my arms outstretched... and then I'll say- "So do I look good holding a baby?"

Say, "Yeah, I know! I'm doing good, I haven't dropped it once!"
Even better, say "Yeah I know, I'm doing good, I ONLY dropped it once!"
Then you'll get out of holding the kid now and forever.

Re: "You look good holding a baby"
my boss just had his second child and he goes Ohhh hold him and I just looked at him and I said "sure i will hold them then drop him and his head."
I am all for kids but as I am sure you all agree enough all ready - just because you think your kids are AMAZING doesn't make me want to spawn anytime yet.

Me too! Actually usually when a new baby is getting held by everyone, I flee to the bathroom.

Re: "You look good holding a baby"
Warning: response from a mom (but one who got that remark for MANY years).
I used to say, and I still feel, "no one looks good with baby vomit on them." If anyone says you do, it's a lie. And they all vomit, even my precious!
I've also said things like, "Since when is a baby an accessory," and "if looks are my top priority, I'll just have some plastic surgery."

See, that's why I want to come to this board sometimes. I have a son now and there is nothing I would not do for him. However, I was both single and childless for a very good part of my adult life. In addition to that, I am one of those people who tries so hard to see all sides of an issue. Also, I still hear my share of rude remarks. The one I hate right now is when people tell me that they are glad that I am finally happy. I WAS NOT UNHAPPY BEFORE AND I NEVER SAID I WAS!!!!! I moved in a new direction when it was right for me. There is no more to it than that. I might not have more children, and I have to brace myself for a whole new round of comments about "only having one."

Of course you are always welcome here-it's great to hear other's points of view and besides- everyone was childless at one point or another... the more the merrier I say!
