Anyone here actually work for cabelvision?

I'm wondering with the loss of these two channels would they drop the package price? I mean geez they charge you for LOTS of little things with a package. It might be a wast of time but I'm going to call and complain.

I also didn't like how they mentioned to go to other channels for food and home related discussion. That doesn't give me any hope that they will bend a little with negotiations with scripps.

Also has anyone looked on the scripps website? There is always two sides of the story. They are saying compared to other networks cabelvision has they are getting crap. HGTV and FN channels have been growing and they deserve more. Why can't cabel get rid of some channels that bore the hell out of people and pay scripps more? I can name so many worthless channels. They play the same crap all the time.

FIOS still isn't available to Brookhaven residents, right?

I thought it was... What's your Zip code?

11779

Is that in Ronkonkoma? Can you do one better and give me a address... It doesn't have to be yours maybe one of your neighbors and I can look that up...

Or you can do it by FM if you want....

Yes, 11779 is in Ronkonkoma. I'm in that zip, and I have FiOS (at least for phone and Internet. I'm happy with my DishNetwork for TV signal, but I do have the option to switch over if I want).

I'm in Holbrook (Town of Brookhaven too) and we can have FiOS for phone and internet, but they don't offer it for TV. If you want the FiOS "triple play" (I'm not sure what they call it) with all services you have to use DirecTv. We looked into switching in September and that's what the deal is. Sucks!!Chat Icon

YUP, you're right.
I was talking to a friend who works for Verizon about this and she said they don't see Brookhaven approving this for a long time, if ever.
And she can't wait to get to work tomorrow. Lots of $$$$$ for her because of this BS with CV.

I bet many verizon employees are scrambling today making a commercial or print ad saying "Hey Cablevision customers, we have Food Network and HGTV!"

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20100101scripps01

"With the distribution contracts expiring on New Year's Eve, the two popular Scripps Networks Interactive channels appealed to fans to make their voices heard and help convince Cablevision to put HGTV and Food Network back on the air. In less than 24 hours, more than 120,000 viewer calls poured into the call center and 35,000 e-cards have been sent to Cablevision from viewers logging on to ilovefoodnetwork.com or ilovehgtv.com to express their outrage and disappointment.

Cablevision services 3 million subscribers in the New York, Long Island and Tri-State region.

And while Scripps Networks Interactive, the parent company for Food Network and HGTV, remains open to discussions, Cablevision has yet to engage in good faith negotiations for their subscribers. Food Network and HGTV are among the most popular networks on TV, yet Cablevision pays them a combined rate of less than 25 cents per subscriber - among the lowest rates in the industry. Scripps executives say the distribution fees they receive from cable and satellite companies are how they fund the family friendly, quality programming that their viewers have come to expect.

"The rates we are seeking represent a very modest increase when you consider that Food Network and HGTV are among the top networks in all of cable," said John Lansing, executive vice president of Scripps Networks Interactive and president of the company's Scripps Networks operating division. "Scripps Networks Interactive is among the fastest growing and most financially sound media companies in all of cable television. We regret that Cablevision has not recognized the market value of our networks or the value of these services to its subscribers."

Food Network and HGTV are appealing to consumers to continue to keep the pressure on Cablevision and demand that Food Network and HGTV go back on the air. They can visit iloveFOODNETWORK.com and iloveHGTV.com or call 866.695.BEST to make their voices heard.

Not sure if this has been posted yet:

Cablevision Customers: Food Network is missing you!

Interesting parts:

Of the 79 Nielsen-rated networks, about 70 are paid more by Cablevision than Food Network.

On average, Cablevision customers pay in excess of $83 per month for their basic cable subscription; yet Food Network receives literally pennies each month from Cablevision for the right to carry its popular programming.

Cable subscribers on the whole said Food Network is worth $1.03 per month, which is considerably more than Cablevision is paying for the network’s programming and more than Food Network is asking in the current contract negotiations. (Source: 2009 Beta Subscriber Study)

And the MOST interesting part:

Be sure to send it from the email that is registered with your Cablevision account. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it appears Cablevision has blocked incoming emails from other addresses.

Ok, I don't know all the facts, and I'm not a HUGE fan of these two channels, but if CV gives in a pays more THIS time, it will just keep happening, and they will just keep raising OUR rates each time.

I get that so many of you love these channels, but if they give in this time, where will it end???

I can live without the channels.
But for ME , it's not a matter of them not paying and pulling the channels. It's that we will not get a price reduction in our rate. If they aren't paying for these channels anymore, than why do we still have to.

You were paying a total of $0.15 per month for both channels.

According to Scripps it's $.25 but either way it's nothing.

A poll that Scripps did says that peolple think they should cost $1.03 per month.

That's a 300% increase. It's huge. I wonder what other providers are paying.

Other providers are probably paying closer to that $0.25 per month price because their contracts aren't up yet. When their contracts are up, I'm sure they will be looking for a much higher price through negotiations as well.

When Time Warner lost MSG and FoxSports about 5 years ago, they issued like a $2-3 credit on everyone's bill per month.

Not sure if CV will do the same, but I can definitely see them dropping people's bills like $1-2 until this is resolved.

They recently took away major channels (MTV, E, to name a few) unless you have a cable box. We pay some of the highest cable rates in the nation, yet we get newer channels last.

Im sure its Scripps & CV, but knowing the history of CV and how crappy they are, im sure they are partly to blame.

They didn't remove the channels outright. They just took them off their analog tier.

The last time I checked... i don't know of any other service that allows you to watch TV without a cable box. FIOS requires cable boxes (or an equivalent device) to watch TV.

So while CV may have removed a few channels, they still have the most channels you can watch without a cable box. So apples to apples regarding pricing, you still get way more with CV because you can watch a ton of channels without a cable box.

And even better, you can also watch all your local channels IN HD (2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 etc) WITHOUT a cable box if your TV is QAM capable. HD watching with no cable box! Can FIOS or Dish do that?

I don't completely understand all this. If I am paying for TV I want TV Channels, especially popular ones. I feel like if i leave CV the same thing will happen with other channels with other agencies like TW and Fox?! I don't understand how they can just remove channels. I also don't understand how there are so many companies for TV. TV should be TV, end of story. Technology is so complicated. Ugh. And I want HFTV! When nothing else is on, there is ALWAYS something watchable on that channel!

I am not a tech person which is why I don't understand. I realize there must be valid reasons for all this but I just don't care. I want HGTV. So annoyed.

Cablevision doesn't own HGTV and Food Network therefore they have contracts with the company that does own them (Scripps). Scripps originally received approximately $0.15-$0.25 per Cablevision customer per month. Scripps contract with Cablevision came to an end on Jan. 1st at midnight. They were negotiating cause Scripps wanted something like a 400%-700% increase. Cablevision counter offered and Scripps refused to budge. Cablevision cannot accept these terms because if they do, each time another contract is up with different channels, those channels will demand more money too which will send consumers cable bills thru the roof (From where they are now). The same thing will most likely happen when Scripps contracts are up with other networks such as Fios. It's sad really. Hopefully negotiations resume.

Yep that's how their contract works. They agree to pay Scripps a total amount per customer (somewhere between $0.15/$0.25 and that's how much you pay for Scripps.

Actually I worded my last post wrong. I apologize that i was doing too many things at once. We pay $0.25 per month for scripps and scripps is paid $0.15 if i understand what my cable "insiders" (dh, friends, family who work for cable) are saying.
