only the ones who work in my industry and we need to compare when going on interviews etc
but no one would ask how much our DH make- nor would I ask someone who didn't work in my industry

Yeah but when I worked for the government, I would still tell friends to go and be resourceful and look it up themselves. In general (not just for gov't workers) if someone wants to share the info, fine. But it is in poor taste to confront people for the info. However, for co-workers in the government, it seems to be a very open area of discussion and that never really bothered me.

Not only would I never ask, I don't like when someone volunteers how much they make to me. It's just something I need to know. DH has a friend who is constantly talking about $$ and trying to figure out how much we make...it drives us both crazy.

My close friends know how much money I make, and I know how much they make. It never came up in a conversation where someone asked, but it's just kind of common for us to talk about it since we're all at the point of buying homes, getting married, having kids. We have no secrets. But, those are my best and closest friends, so maybe 5 people.
I would NEVER EVER EVER ask anyone this question. I would also never answer is someone asked me. (Again, other than those few people that I am close with, we share freely).
ITA with Rachel. My closest of closest friends know our salaries/budgeting/bills etc but mostly because we are all in the same boat...going through the same things so we wind up comparing with each other and use each other as reference points.
But, I would never flat out ask someone their income nor would I appreciate being asked.

ITA. I don't ask, but I know how much most of my good friends make. I have asked friends how much they settled on for home prices, but that is because we are currently looking and I wanted a gauge of how much we could expect to come down from asking price. I tell anyone who asks what we paid for our condo, and don't feel embarrassed or angry if someone asks because they are currently house hunting. It's different if they are just nosey.

I have never asked and I can't imagine just coming out and asking someone that question. However, the discussion of salary has come up with a few of my best friends and I have an idea what they make and they have an idea what DH and I make. Only b/c we are all married and in the process of looking for and buying houses. And my BF actually recommended a job to my DH where he could make more money. The question has never come up for no good reason other than curiousity. I think that's rude.

i know what they make and they know what i make. i don't think it's a big deal at all. we know what each other's bills are, and how we save.
they're my friends for a reason...no one is bragging or complaining. we talk about other things that are MUCH more personal than money as well.

I would never ask someone that question! My in-laws found nothing wrong in asking me what I make and when I got a raise recently what the increase was I just ignored the question and changed the subject!
My DH and his friends are very open about what they make though - different strokes!
