Cost for care for a parent
Just wondering ball park cost
Hired someone privately to stay with a parent who had a stroke and is bedridden
Would be from about noon-6 pm. Mon-Friday
No cleaning
Basics would be changing diapers, possibly a bed sheet if there was a accident. Same with clothing.
Making coffee or a light lunch (not a big eater before dinner)
Baths etc would not be given by this person. But they would brush hair. Wet a cloth for them to wash their face etc
And just keep person company
Thanks!

400-500 a week for a companion?
Its a lot of $ but i see PCA type jobs as the most underpaid, no benefits etc. Similar to a nanny.

Re: Cost for care for a parent
From what I've seen in the past on Care.com or Sittercity it's about $15.hr.
Will they need to transport to appointments?
And make sure they know CPR.

Re: Cost for care for a parent
Can you apply her for community Medicaid? You might be able to get some home health aide(s) paid for by Medicaid.

Cost for care for a parent
Go through insurance. I am having a rough pregnancy so I have a home nurse who comes for IVs and such. No payment out of pocket. All care is covered through my insurance.

I had a caretakers for my grandmother (privately not through an agency ) and it ranged from $20-$25 per hour, off the books.

Yes, even if she is above income limits, she can still be eligible. You can hire a Medicaid consultant (cheaper than an elder care attorney) to do the application for you.
Edited to add: this has some useful information:

I dont know if Nassau and Suffolk have different guidelines.

my grandma had health aides sent from medicaid a few times. for a few hours a day during the week. Be very careful. some of them are completely incompetent, didn't speak very good English. We had so many bad ones that my mom had to ask them to stop sending them.
one girl sat in my grandma's kitchen all day (my grandma was in the bedroom); a bunch of them slept all day. one burned my grandma in the bathtub with hot water.
so please..be very careful.

Re: Cost for care for a parent
My mother just hired a companion for my grandmother. For some reason they did not get approval by Medicaid because I guess they consider my grandmother to be healthy. Anyway she looked on care.com and a majority of people wanted around $15/hour.
ETA she has no medical issues and is independent but this was basically someone to keep her company

about $20/hr private pay not through an agency. $25/hr through an agency. Would recommend going through an agency because they vet their employees (background checks, legally employable etc).

I would look into this. I was told that this could have been an option for my MIL (however, I was unaware of the program until it was too late and she was in the hospital for the last time before she died). I was also told that Medicaid would determine the number of hours a day and the number of days of the week care was needed. Since I was my MIL's primary caregiver at the time, I could have been paid by Medicaid to take care of her. You can designate a family member to do the care, if you have someone who is available to do it.
