WWYD?

DH and I live in an apartment over my parents detached garage. We pay my parents rent, albeit much less then we'd pay in a similarly sized apartment. We have our own address (because it is a separate building on the property), our own entrance, etc. In addition to the rent the utilities are all in our name and we pay all of bills (LIPA, water, oil).
With that said, for the last week or so when we pre-rinse the dishes for the dishwasher, the crusty water from the sink backs up into our bath tub. It's gross.
We have used some liquid drain cleaners at the request of my parents. (as a side note, we typically clean out the bathroom drains every month or so, because of the buildup of hair in the drain). When that didn't work, we went into the garage last night with my dad and saw where there must be a clog because water is dripping from that area. My Dad mentioned he thought the pipes might have to be replaced.
So I asked if my Mom could call the plumber today and she sort of alluded to the fact that she wants DH and I to pay for it. I feel, as our "landlords" they should.
Do you think I am wrong for thinking this way?

Re: WWYD?

I'd ask them to split it. Or-see if your DH can turn off the water and open that pipe to see whats up

Re: WWYD?

you are not wrong for thinking this way but this the down fall of renting from family

we used to live in DHs fathers house and we paid the mortgage, the bills, took care of the lawn, everything

and every time something broke we were expected to fix it, he would help us with the physical labor of it but we had to pay for everything

it pis$ed me off to no end and it really annoyed me when he would ask us "why havent you spruced up the place?".......because its not our house!!!!

but then the things we did do like paint....he yelled at us for painting the wood molding.....

honestly you cant winChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i would try to talk to them and i hope you find a resolution.......
good luck

Re: WWYD?

That is pretty annoying. I would feel the same way.

Not that this is the same, but my uncle owns a number of rentals. He sometimes makes deals with tenants that he will offer them a reduced rent if they take care of any problems with the rental rather than calling him for every issue.

If you didn't live there would they be renting out the space to someone else for more rent? If they are giving you a good deal, I would just pay for it or ask them to split it.

They probably wouldn't rent it out as they've said they don't want to be landlords.
I guess it just annoys me because they make money off us living there (from our rent), as it doesn't cost them anything for us to live there (because we pay all the utilities.

But I guess I could ask, would that be in use if you didnt live there? Would that have to be fixed if you didnt live there? So maybe you should pay for it? I dont know....

IMO it depends on what you are paying in rent compared to what the market rate would be.

Are you paying $800 a month when typical rentals are going for $1000? Then they should fix it.

Or are you paying something low like $300? Then I would pay for it.

but if they wouldnt rent it anyway, they wouldnt have to make that repair. This is probably what they are thinking. So for this as much as it stinks I guess I would expect to pay it myself

It does kinda stink though that they wouldnt be renting it if you werent there, so really, if they wanted to be REALLY nice they could just let you stay there for free and pay utilities

We used to rent from FIL for a great price and he fixed the plumbing whenever there was a problem.

Re: WWYD?

I think it depends on how cheap your rent is. If you're paying below 500 a month I think you should pay for it, but if you're only paying 200 or 300 bucks less than market rate, that's a different story.

I agree with this. My friend's father lives with her (in an apartment over their detached garage) and he pays for all repairs because he feels that the rent they give him is a great deal and it's his way of 'paying them back' when he can.

I also would take your parents financial situation into consideration. Is it possible they just don't have the money to fix it? .

I agree with this. Offer to split it. better to do that than fight with family over money.

I agree. Having rented from my parents before and getting a much discounted rent rate I would pay. However my DH is in the trades so he'd be able to fix it himself. The offer to split it isn't a bad idea either. But I'd feel horrible to have them cover the cost 100%. Unfortunately this is what happens when you rent from family.....

Re: WWYD?

Another thing to think about, if you are renting for way below market to save money down the road then them renting to you is helping you.

I would not assume that they would pay for everything. They are technically your landlords but you are getting a deal too.

I agree. We live in FIL's house and while our rent is less than it would be in another place, it's by no means CHEAP! I would expect him to pay for a big house expense.

Re: WWYD?

We pay $500 a month in rent, and an additional $3-400 in utilities. If we didn't live there, my parents would have to pay the utilities because my dad uses them in the garage. I have no idea what market price would be the for apartment but it is a generously sized 1 bed room.
Yes, my parents aren't in the greatest financial situation but neither are DH and I. I just started working a few months ago after being unemployed for 7 months after graduation.
I guess we'll offer to cover half, it just sucks if we have to pay to replace pipes in a place that isn't ours.
