I am very intrigued by this and I know its probably a good idea to do it, but how much is it??? Has anyone here done it and if so what was the final cost? It seems like it would probably be expensive!

They run specials. I got $250 off last month when I signed. It was a little over $1900 in 2006 when I had my DD. It's really jumped

I am DEF gonna do this!! Its expensive but they do have payment plans!! Right now they're running a $100 off special but I'm gonna hold out in hopes of a better one!

FYI, most companies offer interest free payment plans.. you don't have to front all of that cash at once... thank God!
If you're interested in viacord, why not give them a call and find out payment options?
oh, also, here's a non-profit website that gives all the public and private banking options, and gives the stats on all of the companies offering private cord banking.

We signed up to bank with Viacord. Our initial up front cost was $1900 (we got a special deal because we attended one of their "baby shower" events) and the annual storage fee is $125.
EDIT - They do have payment plans. We signed up!! You pay nothing until you deliver the baby.

we got it for under $2k with the $125 storage locked in price for 25 years. IMO, I don't think you will see too many specials in the near future b/c they are all about the recall the FDA had on CBR's storage bags. It is expensive to do but you don't get a do-over and I just hope it is the silliest money we ever spent!

We plan on donating to the public bank at our hosptial. They don't guarantee you get your own umbilical cord blood, but they allow you to access any available matches from the public bank which is far greater than just having access to one.
Also, you can't use it on the child if he/she is sick as the blood carries the same DNA.
