Your thoughts on Clomid?
The doctor gave me a prescription for it tonight. I have really long cycles suddenly the past 6 months (46 days). I seem to be ovulating but insanely late (around CD33). Is anyone taking this now or in the past that can offer some input (success, side effects, anything)? I am on the fence about filling it.

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
The only thing I really know about it is that it can cause CM to dry up which could actually impede pregnancy unless it's used in conjuction with IUI.

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
I have PCOS and a non functional thyroid. I got pregnant with clomid the first month i took it with DS.
I NEVER had any issues with CM drying up.
I am now on my 3rd cycle of it, ttc again and have had NO side effects at all. Everyone is different but I have not had any problems with it at all.
My sister also took it and got pregnant within 3 moths with 2 of my nephews.
HTH and if you have any questions; feel free to ask :)

Did you regular BD with it? (meaning, no IUI) If so, did you proceed as before with OPKs and whatnot, or was there more testing involved to time BD?
I am starting Clomid on Tuesday and am unsure how one proceeds once you start it (w/o doing IUI). Thanks!

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
I did a lot of things, but on my own, no IUI
I charted; took temp every day used OPKs AND fertility monitor
we have been trying for 5 months but i just started the fertility monitor again this month; I think that is the most accurate
clomid and PCOS can alter OPKs and I think they may skew the monitor a little but I have faith in it LOL
ETA: Once AF was over, we BD'd every other day until i got the "Peak" reading on the monitor; then we BD'd 4 days straight
and the month i got preg. with DS I didnt ovulate until CD20 and that was WITH the clomid
good luck!!!

Do you know, does Clomid affect your normal O day? I usually O between CDs 13 and 15 - if I start the Clomid, can I expect it to be the same? Or will it alter everything?

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
I can only speak for myself, but YES. I had VERY long cycles where i would "O" around CD 30 and then I always have a 16 day LP so i basically had 46 day cycles.
With the clomid, I have "O"d on CD 20 (when I got pregnant with DS) and now TTC#2 i have "O"d on CD 17 1nd 21. This month, I am taking 100mg of clomid instead of 50 and I feel "O" coming already and today is CD12 for me
ETA: but if you are ovulating around 13-15 then you are not having long cycles; so this would just assist in producing more eggs

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
Ok you seem like you have the EXACT situation that I do!!!! Thank you so much you totally put me at ease with this whole thing. The doctor has me coming in on CD12 to check my "follicles." She wants me to continue to temp and use OPK's. She said I should ovulate MUCH sooner but I also O late to begin with.

What is IUI?
Intra-Uterine Insemination. A prodcedure in which a catheter is used to insert the man's sperm through the cervix directly into the uterus.

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
I'm on it right now. First cycle and just had my 1st sono tonight on CD 12 and there's nothing.
And my Dr. told me something that everyone else should keep in mind. Just because you ovulate does NOT mean you will conceive with the clomid.
I'm sure plenty of people have gotten pregnant their 1st cycle but that doesn't mean that the clomid is some type of miracle pill.

Ok my doctor didn't use that exact term but she said she was going to do that procedure if Clomid doesn't work after 3 months.

It sounds pretty bad but my SIL had it done (my beautiful niece is the end result! ) And said while it is by no means comfortable, it's not quite painful either. I imagine it to be a little worse than a routine pap smear?? But that's just me guessing!

nobody is labeling it a "miracle pill". It works wonders for some people and unfortunately, other people need more invasive fertility methods.

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
are you seeing an RE or was clomid prescribed by your ob/gyn?
i have PCOS and im at the end of my first clomid cycle 50mg and i didnt O from it. being that you do O, just late in the cycle, you prob would benefit from clomid.
that being you may want to consider seeing an RE and being monitored on clomid to make sure its having a positive effect. i didnt seem to have CM problems on it, but it also didnt work for me (at least not 50mg). i am moving on to femara and injects next cycle since i had a mild allergic reaction to clomid.
good luck!

An IUI doesn't hurt. I had it done. The procedure takes about 5-10 min and it feels no worse then getting a Pap Smear done. Also, with regards to Clomid. Although it can help with your cycles (no doubt) be sure you are being VERY CLOSELY MONITORED each cycle with blood work and sonos to ensure you're ovaries are NOT being overstimulated. If your follicles are growing too large in size each cycle or you're producing too many at once it's a problem. My friend had that problem and the RE refused to do the IUI or let her TTC that month..........it's not good to have a lot of giant follicles. She moved to IVF eventually.
Lastly, you are limited to a LIFETIME MAXIMUM of 12 cycles of Clomid. Over time the Clomid thins the lining of uterus which will make is difficult to sustain a pregnancy. Obviously an important consideration.
All this being said be sure that Clomid is your best option. OB/GYN's have a tendency to prescribe Clomid fairly quickly because it can work sometimes and it's easy to prescribe. They think it's the solution for everything and they are not really qualified to deal with fertility issues.....it's NOT their area of expertise. I would recommend seeing an RE before you do anything. Fertility is their expertise and they are more equipped to handle any issues you may have and offer different solutions and treatments as well.
I also had loooooong cycles and wouldn't always "O" or get AF.......sometimes for months. I DID NOT want to go on Clomid so the RE prescribed me Metformin which is a diabetic drug shown to help regulate cycles. I was on Metformin for 4 months (Sept - Dec) along with Provera to bring on AF and I ovulated on my own in Dec. I had an IUI and conceived my DD. Now I am TTC #2 and I went back on the Metformin in Sept, took Provera once to bring on AF, and I've now ovulated and had AF twice on my own. (about 34-36 days cycles which is GREAT for me!!) If I don't conceive before Xmas I will go back to the RE on my next cycle for the IUI.
In short, make an informed decision and get a second opinion before you decide the best course of action. It might not be Clomid. Again, I recommend seeing an RE first before doing anything. Good luck.

nobody is labeling it a "miracle pill". It works wonders for some people and unfortunately, other people need more invasive fertility methods.
It's just OVER-prescribed, especially by OB/GYN's who aren't really qualified to handle fertility issues. I took it for 3 cycles when I didn't know any better and didn't realize they were other avenues, that there was other testing that could be done, and that there is such a thing as an RE who knows better. I didn't move to any invasive measures to get pregnant, I told the RE after all my testing I didn't want the Clomid so he recommended trying another drug (Metformin) first before moving to Clomid or anything else. It had less side effects, didn't have any long term issues or effects on my body, and I wouldn't be limited in how long I could take it like with the Clomid which is a 12 cycles lifetime max. In short, the Met worked and I avoided the Clomid.
Of course Clomid is a not a miracle drug (as you said) and yes it does work with some people BUT they are always other options too and it's worth meeting with an RE before deciding on the best course of treatment. That goes for everyone with regards to any medical treatment. Make informed choices.

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
I am on my third round of Clomid this month & we signed papers to do an IUI as well.
I am seeing an RE, so I feel more confindent in proceeding with the IUI.
I had a miscarriage 2 years ago - since than my cylces were never regular. Clomid has made my cycles a bit shorter. I'm actualling O on CDs 19, 20, whereas before it was as late as CD 28.
Are you seeing an RE? I had to have blood work done before going on it & have regular appointments 3 times a month for sonograms so they can monitor me.

Me too On 3rd month of Clomid and going to IUI this month and being monitored by my RE regularly.
I've responded really well to Clomid (i'm on a low dosage 50 mg) - produced more eggs each month and, and they've matured - however i think it does make me O a little earlier than i used to. I used to be CD 16 or 17, now its been CD 13 and 14. This month they're probably going to trigger my O earlier than usual because the follicles have been maturing quickly and are too large by the time i naturally O. That's what they can tell from a sonogram. I definitely haven't noticed any lack of CM - if that's something you're concerned about you should ask your dr their opinion though.
I basically think what you should take from all of these posts is that you should try to be as informed as you can about what you're taking. Personally, i think anything to do with fertility should be closely monitored by an RE - it's their specialty after all. I go and have blood work and sono's every week and they keep very detailed info on what's going on inside.
good luck!

Re: Your thoughts on Clomid?
Thank you so much for all of your input! I am so lucky to have so many people provide such great information!!!! At this point, I am thinking I should go to the RE for a second opinion. However, my OB/GYN said she didn't believe that I was an "RE" case yet because I have only been trying to for 4 months and just have extremely long cycles. She said she wants to wait to see how I react to the Clomid for the next 3 months before making that recommendation. So now I feel like I am going against her if I go....I know that sounds ridiculous since it is my body we are talking about. I have ovulated each month just not until day 33ish. My concern is I will take this and it will make everything worse! I guess an RE's second opinion is my smartest move right now. Thanks everyone again I am so happy to have this site as a source of sanity!
