People really are asking a lot from other people. Nail salons are chaotic and its the last place I'd go for peace and quiet. If the noise bothers you, put on some headphones and stop expecting people to bend to your desires.

If you want a peaceful pedicure, go spend the money to get it done at a spa where you pay to get peace and quiet.

I'm sorry but this thread is completely ridiculous to me. First I want to point out that manis and pedis at your local nail salon are no longer luxuries. They are things we woman do these days to look presentable and fit in this world. Sad, yes, but, for me in my life it's the truth so I am going to say it. Could I do my own toes? Yes. but they would look like a gross mess.

Also, the local nail salons shouldn't be viewed by anyone as a place to relax. They are always bustling with teens and older people loudly chatting it up and are factories of one rushed mani after another. I could go on and on. IF you were talking about a spa where a mani costs $14 and up that would be a totally different story. Yes, in that case, I would expect that no one would bring their young children there but, that is not what we are talking about here.

So now, all that said, not everyone has the luxury of having a husband or family around to watch their kids and not everyone is comfortable leaving their kids with strangers. If I had somewhere to go where I needed a mani and pedi I would absolutely bring my kids along and see people do it ALL.THE.TIME. I don't judge you for leaving your kid with a stranger to go get a mani - don't judge me for taking my kid with me. If you want to relax - go somewhere that is designed to be an adult only spa haven.

Totally agree! I couldn't imagine getting a sitter for a $20 Mani/Pedi!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I actually get them for the same reason you posted because it would be sloppy mess if I did it. It's more maintenance for me.

Totally agree!!! Seriously, there is a nail place on every corner in LI, if you walk into one and see a kid or kids, you can easily just leave and go to another nail salon. Nail salons are not relaxing to me I go for a purpose and I want to be in and out!!! Relaxing is going to a high end spa which is only about once or twice a year for me.

Re: Your opinion

Yikes, are all of your nail salons really this crazy/busy? Mine is pretty quiet. ONCE I had a rude woman loudly talking on her cell, and ONCE I had a woman who thought it was ok to allow her 4 year old to sing ALL of the songs from her preschool graduation loudly for everyone to hear. Other than those two instances, its usually a nice place to relax and get a spa pedi. SOME of us can't drop $$$$ on a spa day and a $20 pedi is a treat.

I think what is being lost in this society is places that were intended for adults only.

Parents don't want to sacrifice to go places because they have kids like many others have done generations ago.

Our parents and grandparents didn't have nail salons on every corner in every neighborhood that were cheap. Generations ago going out of the house to get your nails done was a luxury that my parents in their young years and my grandparents could not afford. Come on are you kidding me???? It's a freaking nail place not The Red Door!!!!!

That's what I was wondering myself!

I only go a few times a year but even when I was going more frequently, I can count on a couple of fingers the amount of times where it wasn't relaxing because of other patrons, music, people on phones.

I already said I have no issue with people bringing their kids I just wonder why you would do it with them why wouldn't you just wait till DH is home to get it done. I get there are times you have no time to do it except for a certain time so you have to bring them then but I am talking about the times you want to get your nails done just to get it done why not just go when your DH is home and leave the kids with him? wouldn't you want the alone time?

I completely agree with this.

I feel like in the past, there was a certain expectation of child behavior, and children were simply not welcome in all establishments. More recently, people have began with the "me me me" attitude, and say "well, I want to bring my kid, so screw it I''m going to."

Then again, I have very old fashioned ideals in many ways, and still think that kids should be seen and not heard. Dd was about 6 weeks old and let out a peep at the grocery store, not even a cry. I shook my finger and told her that nobody wanted to hear that lol. I think the woman behind me thought I was a monster.

As for the sitter comment, not like I (or anyone) should have to justify it, but my dd goes to a sitter during the school year, and then I'm off for the summer. She's only a year, and I don't want her to forget her sitter and cause issues in September, so we decided to have her go once every other week for a few hours to not have any set backs, and so that she can actually be around some other kids instead of with me all the time.

And they learned to do without.
My point is that parents don't want to do without anymore and feel that every place should be welcome to their kids and it is hard to find a place for luxury without spending an arm and a leg. Not everyone can afford regular visits to just the cheap nail salon on every corner. To us, it is a treat.

Re: Your opinion

I don't mind when there are children at my nail salon as long as they are quiet and behaving. Which they usually are. My salon, not a spa, is very quiet and they have the soothing massage music on in the bknd. A very spa like experience with a nail place price. I wouldn't be very happy if I was getting my 10 minute leg and foot massage if there were kids playing and carrying on as if they were at a playground.

Parents know their kids. If you know they will be disruptive, just be courteous to the other patrons and mind your child. I don't think that's too much to ask.

I'm shocked at how many people who are buried in their phones while their kids are acting out. I just smh

Re: Your opinion

Is that really how some of you feel? That if some of us look at our $25 spa pedi as a nice treat, b/c THATS what our budget allows, that we're getting "coach service" and should just have to deal with someone else's poorly behaved child?

How about if your kid is going to run around like a nut, and you're going to ignore said kid and sit on your phone, you skip the nail place and do your own mani pedi?

This is is a NAIL place we're talking about - its not a requirement that you have your nails done. Its not a doctors appointment. Its not something that you MUST do. I have to laugh at the "mom shaming" comments. Sorry. If your kid isn't well behaved, leave him/her the hell home.

To answer your question, I try to get EVERYTHING I need to do done during the day (shopping, hair appts., dr appts. etc) because my DH gets home at 6-6:30, we eat dinner as a family and by the time we're done eating and I clean the kitchen it's almost 7:45 and then we're getting the kids into bed. It's too hectic at night for me to try and do anything outside of the house. My DH is tired from working so I'm not about to run out the door as he's walking in and by 8pm when the kids are in bed ALL I want to do is hit the couch with my DH. The LAST thing I want to be doing at night is running any kind of errand. So that's why I truck my kids around everywhere with me during the day, it's easier for me to get things done while DH is at work so at night we can relax as a family/couple. Chat Icon

This whole nail salon thing aside, I find people's attitudes about where a parent is "allowed" to bring their children so obnoxious on this thread. As long as a child is behaving and not bothering anyone why would anyone think it's their business to decide where someone should bring their kid??? Chat Icon Chat Icon Any parent with common sense is not bringing their children on a spa day, or to a high end fancy place to eat at night, or to an adult movie at 10pm.

But guess what???....................outside of that, you should EXPECT to see kids everywhere including stores of all kinds, nail salons, hair salons, libraries, parks, the train, museums, the mall, supermarkets, and any other PUBLIC place. If you can't stand that fact and can't bear the sight or sound of a child then that is YOUR problem. YOU should simply stay home all day so you don't need to encounter any of these little monsters (children) and then go do all of your errands at night (when most children are in bed) so you're not disturbed and can have all of the "quiet me time" (in a PUBLIC place) that you want. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - What is getting completely lost on this thread is that it shouldn't matter AT ALL if a child is in a nail salon (or anywhere for that matter) as long as the parent is on top of them and they are behaving. I think we can ALL agree that nobody wants to have to deal with a little terror no matter where they are. But I'm assuming the OP was talking about a well behaved child in a nail salon in which case I don't see what anyone's problem is.

Re: Your opinion

Depends on the Nail Salon, the one i got to in Garden city is very large. There is a separate Spa pedicure room and there is no talking/or cell phones allowed.

In the main pedicure/manicure area there are signs posting for children to behave

There is also a new manager and a new rule that employees are not allowed to talk to each other while working which makes it extremely quiet, i never see children there, but its a little more pricey than a regular nail salon

Re: Your opinion

OP said that the kid would "not shut up."

I don't THINK most/all people are talking about well behaved children. I think they're only really talking about poorly behaved children.

Last night I stopped at Marshalls and this woman was casually looking at candles, not paying a damn bit of attention to her son (probably about 4-5) who was pulling items off the shelves and playing soccer w/them on the floor of the store! Are you kidding me?? She wasn't even attempting to control him or 1) stop him from ruining merchandise 2) get him out of the way of ppl who were trying to walk past him in the aisle. I had to move my cart out of the way of a lucite nail polish holder that this kid was using as a soccer ball.

THAT is the kind of kid I don't want sitting in a nail salon when I'm having a service, NOT the little girl who is patiently having her own manicure, or the toddler sitting at his iPad. I'm pretty sure thats how most ppl feel, too.

Ok, so that's one kid. But the general attitude on here is no kid EVER, no matter what should be in a nail salon disturbing someone's precious "me time". That ridiculous.

what about weekends? does he work all day than. I am thinking your answer might be that you like to have family time but I feel that lots of mom forget that they deserve and should have alone time once in a while and isn't getting your nails done by your self a quick way to get this?!

again I am not saying you shouldn't bring your kids to nail places I just don't get why anyone really wants to bring their kids if their DH is home at some point through out the week/weekend when they can just go by themselves!

I feel the same way when I go to Target for some "me" time, and people bring their whining, misbehaved children in. Chat Icon Chat Icon This thread is ridiculous. I don't know anyone that goes to a nail salon to relax. You go to a day spa for that.

Many people do. I can't afford a "day spa" and have never been. I go to a nail salon maybe 2 x per year bc that's when the planets align and I have someone to watch the kids for an hour AND I have time and money. I also go to target kid free for "me" time but other people's kids don't bother me there bc it's a big place and I'm moving around. Id expect kids to be loud there. Mine have and i just try to finish quickly and get out. A nail salon is completely different, as is a restaurant. There are just some places you don't bring kids if you know your kids will be antsy and scream. My DD screams for fun in public and the more we say to stop the more she likes it. So we stopped taking her to restaurants. Not only bc we don't want to bother others but WE can't enjoy ourselves. I'd rather save money if I can't even enjoy a meal. Her twin, on the other hand, could hold her own at LeCirque. Lol

Luckily I've never encountered annoying kids at the salon (probably bc I'm never there). But there is still no need for it. Like others said. It's not the kind of place you can stop what you are doing to go reprimand or calm your kid down if they start acting up. Most parents know their kids limits. I'd never bring mine bc they would flip and annoy me and everyone else there.
