Re: Your opinion

Sorry, perhaps I'm an a$$hole but I don't want to make conversation with anyones kid when I'm out and about. Granted, I'm not the friendliest person ever lol but if I'm getting a pedi, the last thing I want to have to focus on is a conversation with someone else's child.

OP said that the kid would "not shut up."

Ok, so that's one kid. But the general attitude on here is no kid EVER, no matter what should be in a nail salon disturbing someone's precious "me time". That ridiculous.

I think the overall attitude, with the exception of 1 or 2, was that kids who are sitting quietly and not making a ruckus, are fine. It's the ones who are running amok with the parents ignoring them that people have issue with.

Unfortunately the latter seems to be happening more frequently these days.

Trust me, ITA with you and anyone who doesn't want a disruptive kid around. 100%. A lot of the replies sort of read like some people don't want kids around NO matter how they behave. That's the part I don't understand. But I get what you're saying. Chat Icon

Sometimes, yep. I am an adult and want to do adult things. I get that some people, like yourself like to do kids things 24/7 but others do not. We like a break to go out someplace alone or with friends or our dh's and just be with adults.

Everyone, including myself, enjoys a break from the kids. I'm just not so self involved to think that the world will cater to my need to not have a child be in my presence while I'm enjoying my kid free time. I honestly don't care if kids are around, as long they aren't mine and I am not responsible for them I don't care that someone else has their kids in tow.

Unless you go somewhere that is exclusively NO KIDS ALLOWED then the reality is, you and everyone else in the world has to just deal with the possibility you might encounter a kid even while you're trying to have your "adult time".

Re: Your opinion

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest...I love kids..all kids...if I were having a facial or massage and there was a kid running around my table I might be thinking ?? but getting my nails done...definitely not..I don't really consider it a relaxing experience as the owner is usually chatting to me or I run into someone I know so its just a "get in, get it done, get out" situation for me.

I don't THINK most/all people are talking about well behaved children. I think they're only really talking about poorly behaved children.

Last night I stopped at Marshalls and this woman was casually looking at candles, not paying a damn bit of attention to her son (probably about 4-5) who was pulling items off the shelves and playing soccer w/them on the floor of the store! Are you kidding me?? She wasn't even attempting to control him or 1) stop him from ruining merchandise 2) get him out of the way of ppl who were trying to walk past him in the aisle. I had to move my cart out of the way of a lucite nail polish holder that this kid was using as a soccer ball.

THAT is the kind of kid I don't want sitting in a nail salon when I'm having a service, NOT the little girl who is patiently having her own manicure, or the toddler sitting at his iPad. I'm pretty sure thats how most ppl feel, too.

I HATE parents like this! At least make an effort to control your kid. I have 2 "spirited" kids so i know kids aren't always perfect but I at least reprimand, redirect, occupy and don't let them pull crap off the shelves. That's just disrespectful.

I agree! I can't even tell you how many times I've seen parents rummaging through racks of clothes while their toddlers and young kids are wandering around. Watch your kid!! Why is that so difficult???

Back in the day if we ever acted out in public. FORGET IT !! I do think our generation gives less of a shit about others.

I don't get what HAPPENED between our parents and the new generation of parents. Do they all feel guilty because they work that they let their kids do whatever they want? Is there no more common sense left in this world as we are too busy trying to get book smart? I can't figure it out but like I said, there was such a difference between the 5 years between my kids and the way the parents disciplined their kids.
Just go to any extra curriculum thing in elementary school and you will see what I mean.

Do you not see the irony of this statement? Back in the "old days" your mother wouldn't have gone toe to toe calling out women in a petty argument. She would have been polite, no matter what, smile and nodded and continued to mind her manners and stand by the old saying "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Oh the irony.

Is that really how some of you feel? That if some of us look at our $25 spa pedi as a nice treat, b/c THATS what our budget allows, that we're getting "coach service" and should just have to deal with someone else's poorly behaved child?

How about if your kid is going to run around like a nut, and you're going to ignore said kid and sit on your phone, you skip the nail place and do your own mani pedi?

This is is a NAIL place we're talking about - its not a requirement that you have your nails done. Its not a doctors appointment. Its not something that you MUST do. I have to laugh at the "mom shaming" comments. Sorry. If your kid isn't well behaved, leave him/her the hell home.

Sorry but yes, I stand by my "coach" comment. I consider my mani/pedi special a treat too, but I recognize it for what it is. It's not a luxury for everyone. I'm sorry, it's just not. At least not at the nail salon I go to.

But that's a different issue. A poorly behaved child does not belong in ANY public place, EVER, IMO. If someone wants to let their child act like an animal they should keep them home. This is obvious. No one is even arguing that. To not even want to SEE a child at a nail salon is just silly.

Re: Your opinion

I don't think there is/should be a set rule. You need to know your kids. My 4 yo DS would be so bored in a nail salon and therefore likely act like a maniac , so I wouldn't bring him there. But, he loves eating in restaurants and is very well behaved at the table, so we take him to a lot of adult-type dinners (nowhere extremely quiet, because that just makes me nervous). We do not allow technology at the dinner table, but it is just a personal preference. He's a good traveler, so he's been to 3 continents in his 4 years of life. He would drive me and everyone else nuts if I brought him with me while I got a haircut. It all depends on the kid/parents/situation. If you are letting your kid run around like an entitled brat, then they should go home and next time leave them at home, but everyone (kids and adults) has an off day.

I get a mani weekly and I can count on one hand the number of times I've been in a salon where there wasn't some loud, obnoxious woman on her phone or with a friend acting like they were the only people there.

Funny how we are talking about parents not watching their kids, my girlfriend just mentioned about a mother in a store not paying attention to her five kids running around while she is asking her friend if the shoes make her look sexy she is trying on.
AND...this is not on LI so it is not just here. lol

Ditto. I love little kids and having conversations with them but not if I am going someplace to have time to myself to relax.

I didn't read every response, but I don't think it matters where you are - fancy restaurant, a movie, the theater, CVS, or, yes, even a nail salon - if your kid is misbehaving, then a parent should remove him or her from the situation. Obviously it is dependent on the place/time - a kid shouldn't be talking while at the theater (nor should anyone else!), but talking at a restaurant is fine (but running around screaming is not).

If a kid is behaving appropriately for the time/place, then no one is going to know he or she is even there.

If I consider my "adult time" going to target, then it is not rocket science to know that. If I choose to go and do something that is catered towards mostly adults or older children, then I don't think I should have to "deal" with it.

Depends on the Nail Salon, the one i got to in Garden city is very large. There is a separate Spa pedicure room and there is no talking/or cell phones allowed.

In the main pedicure/manicure area there are signs posting for children to behave

There is also a new manager and a new rule that employees are not allowed to talk to each other while working which makes it extremely quiet, i never see children there, but its a little more pricey than a regular nail salon

This thread is making me smh... honestly. If a child is well behaved, who cares? If the child isn't then the parent should remove them. End of story. Nothing really to debate!
The pic of the kid in the foot bath is hilarious.
I'm just posting to find out where this nail salon is? Sounds awesome!

I haven't kept up with this thread mostly bc I don't go to nail salons. I have what I consider to be a"well behaved" 3yo. However she is a very chatty kid and wants to talk to everyone. I'm sure if I took her to get our nails done she would talk the whole time whether it be to me or the girl doing her nails. Aside from making sure she's not too loud, would that make me a bad parent bc I'm not making her sit quietly? I don't think it would be any different than if I brought my chatty mom with me. I wouldn't let her run around touching everything but I wouldn't think anything of her talking as long as she wasn't too loud.

no, it wouldn't make you a bad parent. But as adorable and cute as you think your daughter is, the person sitting there with their eyes closed trying to get 15 min of relaxation in, might not want to be bothered by having to talk to her. Yes, same as if you brought your chatty mom except for one thing - your chatty mom might get the meaning behind a cold stare or someone only responding in a one word answer (meaning they're not up for talking) whereas your 3 yo might not.

Me personally, I would not bring my kid to a nail salon because i know he's be bored and want to move around - thereby potentially disrupting other patrons or the staff. If i'm sitting somewhere 'trapped' either with my feet or hands being worked on, then i can't properly watch him as he decides its fun to jump on a chair, or run around in circles because he's bored of waiting for me. I just don't think a nail salon is a place that kids belong in unless they're sitting there getting a mani/pedi themselves or confined to a stroller and asleep.
but that's just my opinion.. and as we've seen from this thread, there are a lot of those Chat Icon

I certainly wouldn't expect everyone there to want to talk to her. I meant if she were talking to me or to the employee doing her nails it wouldn't occur to me that others wouldn't find her well behaved. They may not be interested in what she had to say but who hasn't had to listen to others' conversation at the salon. You don't want to hear it, tune it out. We could have the same debate about whether or not it's ride to go to the nail salon worth your girlfriends and chat the whole time. Some will think it's ride and other people will think it's nuts to find it rude.

Like you said lots of differing opinions. Just wanted to clarify that I wouldn't expect every customer to be subject to holding a conversation with my kid.

I just want to add, I guess it isn't a big deal to me if kids are at a Nail salon. When I want to be away from kids I go to a bar.

You do know this could open up a whole bunch of other arguments, right?
