yet another reason why i feel screwed this election year

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michelangelo-signorile/romney-some-gays-are-actu_b_2022314.html

I just read this...I'm sitting here just confused as hell...on one hand...I don't want another 4 years of obama...but this comment is something I cannot support.

I'm the child of a gay mother and was raised by 2 women for 17 years of my life. I am still very close with "Mom #2". The thought that this man thinks that would have a negative affect on how I raise my child and how I affect the world is disgusting. I wish there were references for this though. I feel like I've been bamboozled into choosing the lesser of two evils to represent me and ultimately shape the next 4 years if not longer of my life. (sorry for those who will be offended by that...I don't mean EVIL literally)

I read about his comments and what he did as Governor of MA. I think he's disgusting.

Melody, thank you for posting this. I was going to but I feel as though I bombard people with my liberalism enough.

Please see my latest post on the other thread. I wholly appreciate the tough decision many people who identify as Republicans face this year - but I simply can not wrap my head around good, moral people voting for a candidate that represents these kinds of beliefs.

I agree and and thanks for your candor. It's hard especially if you are conflicted ideologically as you are. It's a shame what the Republican party, Lincoln's party, has become.Chat Icon

I too dont agree with some of the social stances of Romney, but I know I will never agree 100% with any one person about everything and I have to pick my candidate based on the issues I feel are urgent right now. I know how confusing it can be, but I always say this is a personal choice (when it comes to voting) and to look at things in a heirarchy. Everyone's heirarchy is different though.Chat Icon

Re: yet another reason why i feel screwed this election year

I could never NEVER vote against someone's civil rights.

Just couldn't do it. I know some people say their own finances come first (but I don't see evidence that a Romney presidency would improve anyone's finances anyway) but I couldn't do that. A few dollars in my pocket is not worth oppressing others. I just think about how I would feel if I couldn't visit my husband in the hospital, or if i had to work because I couldn't be on his insurance, or if we couldn't adopt children together and it sickens me, I could never do that to anyone. I think this whole ME ME ME, GREED GREED GREED is the source of SO many of our problems in the US

I can agree, partly...I just think when it gets to the point that you may lose your home or your livelihood is threatened and you have a child to think about...thats when things get real and you start to put finances first. Sometimes it comes more from a place of survival and being able to provide for your family and less from a place of greed. I get what ur saying though.

Re: yet another reason why i feel screwed this election year

I'm in the same boat Melody and really having a tough time with this election. I just don't think I can afford 4 more years of Obama. In the 2nd debate when they said that gas was $1.87 when he took office and now is well over $4- that was striking to me.

BUT, I really can not stand the way Romney speaks of women- and now gay families- my aunts are gay, and I have a gay cousin, he and his partner are trying to adopt- and I can not imagine a luckier child-- assuming they can get one.

I'm just fed up with this whole system!

I can understand that...but I don't see that there is any Obama policy that has hurt people that Romney will reverse. It seems that for the average person, it's all going to stay the same no matter who is President.=, honestly. If there were come concrete thing where you knew that you'd be able to survive under Romney but not Obama then i could understand that more, but I just don't think that's even the case.

I don't see how people can honestly blame Obama for the financial crisis. There is NO ONE who could have fixed things in this time, and to the PP who mentioned gas prices, that has very little do to with the President. When Obama took office gas prices were down sharply from a previous high close to $5. There are MANY factors that go into gas prices. Honestly I hope gas prices remain high. it's the ONLY way to get support behind alternative energy sources. oil will run out eventually no matter where the get it from

Re: yet another reason why i feel screwed this election year

And therein lies the rub, for me.

There is a part of me, a LARGE part actually, that *wants* to vote Republican. Really wants to, and wanted to in 2008. I think they are more fiscally astute, as one would expect from a party of "rich white guys" Chat Icon I really do. And with our economy in the shitter, a responsible approach is desperately needed right now.

But when the GOP presents me with candidates like Sarah Palin for VP and Romney/Ryan I just cannot pull the lever for their party. CANNOT. For me, and I think most people, humanity trumps politics. Always.

The man's actions and statements, aside from the obligatory screaming headlines, are a testament to WHO HE IS. A matter of public record. And for me, a matter of conscience. I do not like who he is, what he stands for, and his arrogant disdain for PEOPLE LIKE ME.

This election was the GOP's to lose at the start of this year, imho, and by golly, they're doing an incredible job of throwing it all away with both hands.

It really pisses me off that in a country of so much talent, and so much genius, the Republicans continue to present a Keystone Cop-like assortment of candidates, or puppets, if you will, for the American people to throw their votes behind. Either they are truly truly lacking in intelligence, or worse, they believe WE are.

I don't consider myself particularly sensitive, especially not where politics are concerned, but holy hell, the GOP has managed to offend me on a near-daily basis during this campaign.

Win or lose this year, for 2016, all I can think to say to the GOP is "GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER".

I know this probably wasnt meant the way it sounded...at least I hope not.

If not, please know that its not about greed. If I am greedy for wanting to keep both myself and my DH working so that I can put food on the table and a roof over my head, then so be it. I would like to have another child one day too, but I told DH not with how uncertain things are for us.

Maybe I misunderstood your comment, which I may have because usually i have never had this reaction to one of your posts before.

Please understand I am by no means rich and just looking to stay rich or get richer. There are some people on here who are better off now. Yay! I am happy for you...truely. Not everyone is so lucky, so please just be respectful of that. It seems you have made your voting choice and thats fine. No one is trying to make you justify it.

ETA: Gas prices dropped sharply because the economy nearly collapsed and futures were down. Then they went back up again. I am not saying drilling is the answer for the future, but he should have taken initiative to not be dependent on foreign oil to bring down the cost. The cost of fuel is directly connected to the success of the economy.

Re: Gas Prices

Yes gas was $1.87 at the time Obama took office. They went down dramatically because we were in an economic downfall. Months before that, they were well into the $4 range, even more so than they were just a few weeks ago. Gas prices are based on the global economy, not just the US economy. So yes, when you hear that gas was so cheap in January '09, it's easy to put the blame on Obama but if you really take the time to look into it, you can see it was only a temporary dip due to the busted economy.

Re: yet another reason why i feel screwed this election year

I don't mean to say that wanting to be able to put food on your table is greed. We all need that. We're all concerned about our finances.

If there is some Romney policy out there that means the difference between your kids eating and not, then I understand voting for him. But as far as I can tell, things for the middle class are going to stay pretty much the same. both candidates support keeping the Bush tax cuts for the middle class. If it were the case that let's say Obama wanted to let them expire for all, and that would make a HUGE difference for you, then i understand that. For me, even if the Bush tax cuts expire, or I have to pay more for healthcare or who the hell knows what, I'm willing to make that sacrifice to live in a world where we are just a little bit closer to equality.

The greed thing comes in because I think there are people who would choose $100 in their pocket over the rights of people they can't see and don't know, but mosely because so far Romney's plans only seem to benefit the very wealthy who don't have to worry about putitng food on the table or paying rent every month

I don't blame obama. Obviously Bush put the wheels in motion...But when you see charts that show that lines steep incline under obamas presidency as an average american and not an economic analyst it's hard to know where one persons irresponsibility ends and another's begins. I think Solyndra is a prime example of that. There needs to be more accountability for those that accepted bailouts. Ford has done amazing and they did not accept a bailout. They have made themselves a model...and more companies should be held up to that model. it needs to happen now.

I appreciate the urgency, but I think it is important to note that major economic turnaround can't happen NOW. It is never a quick process. That said, it IS happening. There has been job creation and economic growth recently. It is slow, I understand that, but Romney isn't going to wave a magic wand and make it happen immediately. It IS going on NOW, just slowly. And, as has been stated by others, I have not seen, heard or read ONE policy from Romney that will make things that much better. If anything, he will use math that does not add up and take us back to Bush-era tax cuts that led us here in the first place.

May I ask what fields all this growth is occuring in? Why is the number of people unemployed or underemployed rising not falling? No one expected a miracle from anybody, but sure didnt expect it to be worse.

I must be hanging with the wrong bunch but I honestly only know of one person out of all friends, family, and aquaintences who is doing better now and she was coming from a very low point in her life.

So it was down when he came in, why did it go up again? Again, the reason if you think baclk was the fact that everyone was on verge of collapse. It had to go down, people were unable to buy.
