WWYD? (work related)

I found out recently that my full time job is ending 12/31. It's a grant funded position (I work at a college) and the grant got cut big time for 2010. My boss did everything she could for the last few months to get more funding, but it didn't work out.

There is only enough money for a part time position now, which they offered to me.

The pay is disgusting. It's 25 hours per week. It would be no medical benefits and no paid time off. I'd take home about the same - or less - as what unemployment would be every 2 weeks.

I am eligible for unemployment.

I am also considered an internal candidate for up to 6 months after the job ends, which means I have to be interviewed if I apply for a position within the college and I meet the requirements.

I want to continue working at the college, great perks, TONS of time off, etc. So what should I do?

Take unemployment and be home with DD? (which I would love)

Take the P/T position and still be seen around the college?

I am applying to positions within the college now that I qualify for but the college moves soooo slow so interviews wouldn't be until Jan/Feb.

Thanks for any input. Chat Icon

Re: WWYD? (work related)

How long have you been working at the college for?

Honestly, I'd take the unemployment. If you've been there long enough, and were a solid employee, then I don't think it's necessary to take the P/T job to be "seen" around campus. I would just make sure to keep in touch with your boss and co-workers and do some networking at the college and surrounding areas.

I've been here 2.5 years and am well known to most of the employees around campus and will definitely keep in touch with my boss and all my coworkers.

Being that you don't pay for daycare (you're MIL watches DD right now, right?), personally - I would take the PT for the time-being and see if it works out - just to keep your foot in over there.

Agree 100%. At least with the unemployment you can be home with DD and won't have to shell out for child care. And babies WILL get sick, and need a dr. visit - if you have to take her you won't get paid for that day. All things being equal, I'd go for unemployement. You WILL get another job, but these first months with DD will NOT come around again, so that would be the deciding factor for me. Good Luck!!

Re: WWYD? (work related)

Thank you! And yes, my MIL watches DD so we don't pay for childcare. I'm just so torn b/c I really like working here and love my coworkers. But spending every day with DD would be great!

The other thing is that if I take the P/T job and something does open up and I know about it before it gets posted, they could just move me into the position without posting it, doing interviews, etc since I already am employed there.

If it was me and my MIL would be watching DD I would take the P/T position. You would still get to spend time with DD and you would be readily available if another position opens up.

Jess why dont you try the P/T thing? At least youre sorta getting 2 for price of one (sometimes home w/ SIenna, and also at college to keep your status)

With this being said, I would take the P/T job. You're still bringing in money, home with DD part of the time, and have an edge up on other possible candidates.

Re: WWYD? (work related)

I would keep the p/t job at the college and pounce on anything new that comes up. Out of sight out of mind, especially in this economy when everyone and there uncle are trying to get a job.

At least with the p/t hours you'll get to spend more time with your little one!

I'm really sorry. This stinks!!

I agree. You will ahve the best of both worlds. More time with DD and a better chance of getting into FT position, quicker. Good Luck!

Re: WWYD? (work related)

As someone who works at a college. I would take the PT job. Positions are very hard to come by and imo once you leave it is almost impossible to get back in. By being there you are def. more "in the know" about what is becoming avaialble.

I would take the PT job. you will also be entitled to the unemployment i think for the other 1/2 that you are still out of work for.

I agree with this

Stay invovled. If youre not actually losing money by working then you're only gaining by staying.

In my mind its an issue of well if this didnt happen I'd still be working instead of being home, so no diff there, instead I keep my foot in the door AND get a chance to spend time with my daughter. Best of both worlds. But that's just my opinion.

I would keep the PT job.

I would kill for a PT job that I enjoyed. I would do it more to keep my career going vs the financial compensation.

If you want to stay there I would go PT until another position opens up. That way you will have more time with DD and work as well.

Re: WWYD? (work related)

Thanks for all your opinions! I think i'm leaning towards taking the P/T job... i'm nervous that i'll leave and not be able to get back in (like Michi said it's not easy to get into a position at a college).

And I actually just figured it out and with taxes taken out, my paycheck will be LESS than unemployment would be every two weeks. How ridiculous is that! Chat Icon
