Re: WWYD? (work related)

In this environment I would take the PT job that way you know you have first dibs when a FT position opens up especially since you don't pay for daycare.

In my job they laid off a lot of people and then kept them temping for us and many of them now have FT positions in other departments. Sorry about your job.

Thanks for all your opinions! I think i'm leaning towards taking the P/T job... i'm nervous that i'll leave and not be able to get back in (like Michi said it's not easy to get into a position at a college).

And I actually just figured it out and with taxes taken out, my paycheck will be LESS than unemployment would be every two weeks. How ridiculous is that! Chat Icon

but you will still be entitled to some of the unemployment since you aren't working full time. and you should get it ontop of the PT job.

I'm so sorry.

Can you get cobra from your job if you are unemployed? If so, I would do the unemployment, especially since the pay is the same. Keep looking though you may something better. Everything happens for a reason.

Thank you! And yes, my MIL watches DD so we don't pay for childcare. I'm just so torn b/c I really like working here and love my coworkers. But spending every day with DD would be great!

The other thing is that if I take the P/T job and something does open up and I know about it before it gets posted, they could just move me into the position without posting it, doing interviews, etc since I already am employed there.

I would take the PT job if childcare for you is free. Unemployment isn't forever and getting out of the house every day or a few days a week would be good for you. You'll still have an extra 15 hours a week to spend with DD. And if something better opens up, then you're in a good position.

It would be great to spend all that time....BUT the flip side is keeping DD used to being with Grandma sometimes will be helpful when you DO get another job!

PLUS.......the 2nd paragraph sums it up well too!

If you will be bringing in the same $$$....work PT....adult/ you time is important too!

Re: WWYD? (work related)

i used to work at a college and had to give my position up for a semester because i was preg... and it had been very hard to get another position... really because i was not considered a staff member anymore and staff members get preference and if the college is union then the union requires internal posting of positions for a period of time prior to it going public... so i would highly recommend taking the pt position to keep your foot in the door

Re: WWYD? (work related)

Honestly I would take the unemployment & stay home with DD. I feel like everything happens for a reason. It seems like in your heart you want to be home. You can always go back to work when you find something full time.

Re: WWYD? (work related)

are you in a union? I work for a University also... I'm taking a guess that you're not otherwise they really couldn't take away your position.

I'd stay... I'd hang around for the connections so you can pounce on the first opportunity

Re: WWYD? (work related)

I was just faced with a similar dilemma. I was home collecting unemployment and a p/t job became available in my field (which is currently like fort knox). I actually LOSE income by taking the jobChat Icon It pays less than unemployment week by week and I have to now pay for gas, coffee, lunch etc. BUT because it is only p/t (3 days), I can still collect for the 2 days that I am home. It basically balances out to break even.

I took the position to get myself back into the workforce. These days it's way to hard to get a foot in the door anywhere and my son just started full day pre-school. So while financially, it made NO sense for me to take the position....I did it for my mental/emotional health and especially for the potential for full time employment.

If daycare is not an issue...I would take the p/t spot and see if you could turn it into something better. Stepping outside the door, may shut it on youChat Icon

Sorry this is happening. Good luckChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: WWYD? (work related)

I am down in fl and there is an article in the palm beach post today about fl unemployment- it is not the same as ny unemployment

Based on that I would take the part-time job- been seen around and most likely you will get the first full time job available
