WWYD: School/Career/Life

I have been trying to get a teaching job for over 3 years. I have nothing lined up for Sept so I enrolled in an online real estate course (something I have always been interested in). I also have 4 courses left at SCCC to become a certified paralegal. I just got my award letter from NYS and they are willing to give me about 70% of my tuition to finish the program full time only in the fall.

If I do the real estate and school I won't have time to be a substitute teacher or accept a leave replacement if it should come up. Am I taking on too much?

I am afraid that they will change the requirements for the paralegal program and I will need more than 4 classes. I also don't think it'll be THAT easy to get a job in that field either.

Re: WWYD: School/Career/Life

I'd do real estate and school, because you'd be doing something rather than waiting more time for a teaching gig to come along.

Can you take classes at night? If you take them at night, if a leave replacement came along, you would then be able to do it together.

I'd contact the school that you'd be getting the paralegal degree to make sure that there are no additional classes you'd need, and that they can all be done in one semester as well.

Well that's the thing. In order to get the financial aid it has to be full time and all the classes are being offered in the fall (though they may be full by now Chat Icon ). I would have to go during the day though as well as 2 nights. As of now, the 4 is all I need. But it's not what I really want to do with my life and I don't even know if there are jobs out there! Find an entirely new path? Or 2 out of the 3? I should've made some combo options.

If you don't even want to do the paralegal thing with your life, then I wouldn't do it at all. Why waste time on something you are not passionate about?

I officially change my answer to keep waiting for a teaching job, but do the real estate thing.

I'm joking. Perhaps I should've just called you instead of putting it here. Chat Icon I don't know. What I WANT is a teaching job but I am sick and tired of being broke and depressed. Chat Icon I don't want to be a paralegal but I feel like it's something I *should* finish. KWIM?

IDK, thank you though for all your input. I guess I have to just go with it and see what happens. Hey, school hasn't started yet, I COULD still get a job Chat Icon

I have to disagree with this. You have obviously already invested a lot of time and effort into the paralegal program, if you only have 4 classes left. I would finish the program and get your certificate, whether or not it is something you see yourself using now.
No one can take that certificate away from you once you've earned it, and it may come in handy as something to fall back on someday.

Good luck with whatever your future endeavors may be!

I was going to say the same thing! I've heard there's a pretty decent demand for paralegals. I would focus on that for now.

Best of luck!

Re: WWYD: School/Career/Life

I'm not a huge advocate for going back to school for something you don't see yourself doing.

Have you considered doing something related to teaching in a human services agency?

I am pretty sure a lot of day programs for the disabled hire people who have a background in education.

I know someone else on LIF who has a background in education but can't find a teaching job posted this similar topic under career a few weeks ago. You can probably still find the thread. I listed a bunch of agencies to look into on it.

To the OP... normally, I'd 100% agree with the above. But in this case, since you've already started the program, only have a few classes left, and they're willing to cover so much of your tuition, I'd do it.

Even if you can't see yourself loving being a paralegal, at least it would be an option IF the time came that you wanted or needed to do it. And sometimes liking a job is more about the environment you do it in, than the job itself.

Good luck whatever you decide Chat Icon

I dont know WHAT you should do either!Chat Icon Great help I am huh? However, from a paralegal standpoint, on long island 9 times out of 10, you will not be a paralegal, you will be a legal secretary. Unless you have secretarial experience, you will be entry level and start around 30K. I dont know if that helps you make your decision.

I also have a degree in teaching - Elem Ed. When I graduated, I couldn't find a job, so I went into Pharmaceutical Sales. I quit when I was pg with #2.

I actually just signed up to take the Real Estate Class for October. I have always wanted to do it.

Let us know what you decide. Good Luck!

I guess I feel like I know going back to school is probably the right choice, why not be marketable in 3 fields right? Chat Icon

as a Realtor I have to say real estate does NOT stink right now at all- I am super busy and so is everyone in my office

I wouldn't comment on teaching- since I am not in the industry

This is the best time to get into the real estate industry- the average age of a Realtor on LI is 52

the average age of a home buyer is 30-35

there is a HUGE demmand for young agents who can speak the language of the buyers

those of us that do....are doing VERY well...

there are so many reasons to get into the market now vs when it's at it's "peak" if anyone would like the list- FM me

I know silly. If you feel like you want to finish what you started, then do it. You'll feel like you accomplished it and you'll then have that degree. A degree can't hurt you.

This is what I would do, go back to school and do the online real estate course so you have 3 different areas to find a job in. I know how difficult its been for you to find a teaching job and now you will have options.
Good luck!!

BTDT. If you don't ever want to be a paralegal, don't bother going back to school, honestly. I would focus on the real estate classes and finding a teaching job Chat Icon
