You don't even go in the building? I would leave the baby in the car and not think twice about it.
This.
You *might* get a judgmental look but no one is going to call the cops or do anything drastic if you are always within sight.
And you're right, it's probably safer to leave the baby in the car for 30 seconds. Some of the responses on this thread are a little over the top.
It's not "unsafe" to take a baby into cold air...unless we have a below zero wind chill. And God forbid you fall with the baby in the carrier, I would hope the baby would not get hurt as those seats are meant to withstand a major car accident.
I don't think it's over-the-top to take responsibility for your kids. Sometimes parenting is inconvenient!
Well, if it was very icy on the sidewalk, I would consider it to be pretty dangerous to try to walk carrying a very heavy baby in a heavy carseat, while also trying to help my 4 year old navigate the ice while also carrying her backpack for her. I have to think about the safety of both of my children, not just the baby. A 4 year old still needs help walking on icy pavement. And just bc a carseat is meant to prevent death in the case of a car accident, doesn't by any means mean it's perfectly fine to drop the car seat if you slip and fall or get pulled down by your other child.

I'm in the same situation as you and it sucks! Especially since DD is always sleeping and I take her out to pick up DS. She's over a year so she's not in the carrier seat anymore. I take her out because knowing my luck God forbid something would happen! Or my husband would leave work early and happen to drive by and see her alone in the car. He would flip!
Edit to add if you're comfortable and you feel it's safe then by all means leave the baby!
Side note story: my tenant used to leave her napping baby alone in the house while she would run to the corner to grab her laundry. I could never do something like that although I wish we lived in a world where we could!!

I would leave the kid in the car with the car parked, off, and locked.
What is the risk to the child if you are right there 15 steps away?
Anything could happen.
I would bundle her up in the car seat and get a cover for over it and take her with me.
I was in the same position and always left my baby in the warm car. Door locked. Never took my eyes off the car.
I love the "anything could happen" argument. Guess what? the same could be said for taking your kid out of the car with you. People drive around distracted, accidents happen. You could just as easily worry about being hit by a car while holding the baby. I personally think you'd be safer in the car

Exactly! If people going to get all upset that I can literally see my baby in his carseat at all times and could get back to him within seconds, but say "you never know what could happen". What really could happen? No one could break into my car and unbuckle him from his carseat before I could get back. He won't have access to anything he could choke on. If a car crashes into my car, well that could happen any time we are ever driving or parked, so that's not a valid argument bc if you're that worried about a crash then you shouldn't take your kid out in a car ever. And someone could crash into my car whether I was in the car or not. But slipping on the ice while holding a heavy baby and trying to help a young child also keep her balance actually does have some risk to it, for all 3 of us, not just the baby.

Hopefully the school will just be really good at ice removal so I never actually have to worry about this.

FWIW I did this basically for 2 years. First because my DD was an infant and then because it was a PITA to wake a sleeping toddler to walk 10 feet, to have to try and wrangle them back into the car seat 2 min later. No one ever gave a look or said a word.

If you don't lose sight of the car/ don't enter the building, it is NOT irresponsible to leave the baby in the car. That's like saying you can't let your kids move around in the playground. Makes no sense.

Well.... a meteor could fall from the sky and hit your car. Anything could happen! ANYTHING!
That same anything could also happen if you take the baby out of the car for the short walk to the door. Said meteor could fall a little to the left and hit you and then you'd have wished you left the baby in the car.
It's probably best to never leave the house. Unless said meteor falls on your house.
Best to dig a bomb shelter. Yes

I love the not leaving the house idea! Anything that doesn't require me to wear pants is a big thumbs up from me.

Trust me, lately this option is seeming better and better. And not due to the meteor either/

This. And I wouldn't think twice about doing this if I was that close and could see the car the entire time.
I always find it interesting when I read on this site how many people who would never do this (and many other things) when it seems like anyone I know IRL in my town would do that and nobody would bat an eye.

Wwyd?
I am in the same situation this year and was also last year. I always make sure I get the parking spot closest to the door and leave the baby in the car with the doors locked. Never been an issue.

I would leave the baby in the car, with it ON, locked but running. I would however take the keys so someone couldn't drive off with the car.
And oh yeah... I have done this. many times.

Re: Wwyd?
I had three kids in under three years so I get how hard it is to cart them all over alone. Our preschool has a small lot behind it which is where entrance is. If it was 15 feet and you could see car and are not even entering the building, I would be ok with it. It would be the same as putting baby in car in front of your house and then going to lock your font door. In my case I would bring my older kids inside, hang up coats, etc. I would never ever think to leave one in the car in that case as it could take a while in there. I would never enter a bulging and leave them. If it's 10 feet and you are walking to entrance only, I really think that sounds similar to pulling up to your curb and then getting out to unlock your door. Kwim?

I would leave the baby in the car. I would probably even leave it running, in park with the park brake on If the situation is as you described, the REAL risk is pretty much non existent. If you ran the statistics, the risk of the baby getting injured walking with you in the parking lot is probably higher.
I recently read this article which is very fitting for your situation: Why Do We Judge Parents for Putting Kids at Perceived - But Unreal - Risk?
http://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2016/08/22/490847797/why-do-we-judge-parents-for-putting-kids-at-perceived-but-unreal-risk
Same.
